Absence: ‘Significant link’ with life satisfaction

A new report has revealed a “significant” link between school absence and pupils’ sense of life satisfaction, particularly among girls. The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) report comes as absence remains more than 50 per cent above pre-pandemic levels, averaging 8.4 per cent in secondary schools last academic year compared to 5.5 per cent in 2018-19. NFER researchers analysed data from the 2022 programme for international student assessment (PISA) where pupils rated how satisfied they were “with [their] life as a whole”, on a scale of 0 to 10. They cross-examined this with absence data from the national pupil database to inform solutions to help tackle the attendance crisis. Gender divide The research found pupils’ life satisfaction ratings were “significantly related to school absence”, with lower levels of life satisfaction associated with higher absences from school. The link became stronger as absence rates increased. Following yesterday’s news that Artsy and Artnet had been brought under the same leadership, the latter online art marketplace has laid off dozens of employees. Sources told ARTnews that the layoffs particularly impacted Artnet’s editorial arm, Artnet News, one of the most widely read art publications in the US and Europe. Among the senior reporters who are no longer at Artnet News are Sarah Cascone and Eileen Kinsella, both of whom were on staff at the publication for more than a decade. Source link

Getty Museum Acquires Two Significant Dutch Still Lifes

The Getty Museum in Los Angeles has acquired two Dutch still lifes of note—including one that the institution said it “has been seeking over two decades,” according to a press release announcing the news. Jan Davidsz. de Heem’s Glass Vase with Flowers and Fruit (ca. 1673–74) is one of nine similar paintings that demonstrate the artist’s “skill of illusionism and accurate botanical and entomological observations,” per the release, and was unrecorded until it came out of a private collection in Germany in 2022. The arrangement includes flame tulips (“still a highly prized flower in the Netherlands”) as well as plums, berries, roses, morning glory, milk thistle, and honeysuckle. Source link
