King Charles gesture showed ‘potential’ to get close with Meghan Markle | Royal | News

Meghan Markle, despite having the “potential” to bond with King Charles, was unable to bridge the gap before a bitter feud came into the picture. Although Meghan is no longer on good terms with the Royal Family, one specialist believes there could have been an opportunity to foster a “strong” kinship within the family. Marrying into The Firm in 2018 when she wed Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex became a focal point for royal observers around the globe. However, the couple sent shockwaves worldwide with their decision to step down as senior royals just two years later. The Royal Family has since found themselves at odds with Harry and Meghan as the pair continue to make damning allegations about The Firm. According to relationship guru Louella Alderson, although it seems improbable that harmony will be restored, she points out there was a stage when Meghan could have built a “deeper level” connection with her in-laws. In an exclusive sit-down with the Mirror, Louella highlighted how King Charles’ offer to accompany Meghan at her wedding …

Hollywood hysteria: the 60s movies that showed a time of madness | Film

In assembling a slate of films, a programming team or other curatorial body will often be made to answer the question of why now, what relevance old art has to the current moment. In the case of the Criterion Channel’s new series Hollywood Crack-Up: The Decade American Cinema Lost Its Mind, a sampling of arthouse hysteria from across the 60s, the argument all but makes itself. These bursts of celluloid madness come from a not-so-remote time when governmental credibility had hit an all-time low and the culture-war rift yawned wider than ever; when the disillusionment of a mistreated youth generation exploded into student protests against an overseas war colored by unsavory political imperatives; when ascendant minority groups demanded rights and dignity in the face of high-boil prejudice; when a terrified old guard felt that everything they could once take for granted had been upended and replaced by unfamiliar, strange, anti-authoritarian new normals. Calamity was in the air. Surely, somehow, we can find it in ourselves to relate. The 16 fever dreams of delusion, brainwashing, public …

Meet the Woman Who Showed President Biden ChatGPT—and Helped Set the Course for AI

Meet the Woman Who Showed President Biden ChatGPT—and Helped Set the Course for AI

one day in March 2023, Arati Prabhakar brought a laptop into the Oval Office and showed the future to Joe Biden. Six months later, the president issued a sweeping executive order that set a regulatory course for AI. This all happened because ChatGPT had stunned the world. In an instant it became very, very obvious that the United States needed to speed up its efforts to regulate the AI industry—and adopt policies to take advantage of it. While the potential benefits were unlimited (Social Security customer service that works!), so were the potential downsides, like floods of disinformation or even, in the view of some, human extinction. Someone had to demonstrate that to the president. The job fell to Prabhakar, because she is the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and holds cabinet status as the president’s chief science and technology adviser; she’d already been methodically educating top officials about the transformative power of AI. But she also has the experience and bureaucratic savvy to make an impact with the …

Mia Regan just showed us how to wear black this summer

Mia Regan just showed us how to wear black this summer

Taking cues from Dua Lipa and her recent monotone spring ensemble, Mia Regan just reinforced Dua’s divergent spring/summer stylistic choice, donning an all-black look that’s anything but boring.  The model and former girlfriend of Romeo Beckham was seen yesterday attending the launch of Victoria Beckham’s new collaboration with high street brand Mango, dripping head to toe in the new collection.  © Instagram / @mimimoocherShe nailed the ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend Mia, who is known for her fun-loving, often colourful style chose to sport this season’s most cultivated ‘no pants’ trend, pairing a crochet black maxi skirt over high-waisted bikini bottoms. As for the top half of her killer ensemble, the Prada muse chose to keep things simple, sporting a sheer black long-sleeve blouse over a plain black bikini top.  © Instagram / @mimimoocherI will be needing these sandals For accessories, she opted for a pair of leather look strappy sandals, also from the new collection, a stack of chunky silver rings and a matching bangle on her wrist.  The look in itself has us lusting …

Alan Shearer showed rigour and bravery to stand up to Pep Guardiola’s rant over fixture congestion

Alan Shearer showed rigour and bravery to stand up to Pep Guardiola’s rant over fixture congestion

Have we reached peak pundit? Three were stationed close to the FA Cup and BBC Sport’s pitchside plinth after Manchester City’s win over Chelsea, alongside Gary Lineker, and Jermaine Jenas on gantry detail. So five former footballers to pontificate over the 22 involved at Wembley, a 1:4.4 ratio for now but due to rising budgets and inflation over the next decade we can look forward to the era of one ex-pro per player. Pep Guardiola arrived for his post-match debrief, greeted with risky familiarity by Lineker who plonked a welcoming hand onto the manager’s shoulder. No complaints from Guardiola but in doing so Lineker wobbled and nearly unseated the trophy from its table off his starboard bow. Forget about the BBC Gladiators revival, we almost had a reboot of Auntie’s Sporting Bloomers. The discussion which followed summed up several unwelcome trends in football. Lineker shaped for a gentle line of inquiry about the challenges of facing Chelsea after defeat to Real Madrid in midweek, and the pride Guardiola surely felt about his players making it …

Sydney teen accused of stabbing 2 clerics showed no signs of radicalization, Muslim leader says

SYDNEY (AP) — A 16-year-old boy accused of stabbing two Christian clerics during a Sydney church service might have “anger management and behavioral issues” and a “short fuse” but had shown no signs of being radicalized, a community leader said Thursday, after authorities declared the stabbing a terrorist attack. The teen spoke in Arabic about the Prophet Muhammad being insulted after he stabbed Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and the Rev. Isaac Royel during Monday night’s Assyrian Orthodox service, which was being streamed online. The bishop released an audio statement on Thursday saying that he was “doing fine, recovering very quickly” and that he forgave his attacker. Jamal Rifi, a Sydney doctor and Muslim community leader, said the boy had apologized when his family visited him at a hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday. “He kept apologizing to his mum and saying sorry and all that sort of thing, and he showed remorse for what he did,” Rifi told Sydney Radio 2GB. Rifi said he spoke on Wednesday with the teenager’s parents, sister and an uncle who …

British Media Showed Restraint on Princess Kate’s Health. It Didn’t Make a Difference.

British Media Showed Restraint on Princess Kate’s Health. It Didn’t Make a Difference.

Days before Catherine, Princess of Wales, ended the wild speculation over her absence from public life by revealing that she is battling cancer, a top royal journalist appeared on British national television and delivered a stark message to the media: Knock it off. “I think everyone just needs to give her a little bit of space,” Roya Nikkhah, royal editor of The Sunday Times of London, said on “Good Morning Britain.” “This is a woman who’s been in the public eye since she was in her early 20s, and she’s barely put her foot wrong. I think we should all lay off a little bit.” The idea of an editor at a Rupert Murdoch-owned publication scolding other journalists for nosiness may strike some as a bit rich. After all, London newspapers pioneered the celebri-fication of the House of Windsor, famously hounding the previous Princess of Wales, Diana, and exposing the most microscopic details of her and her children’s private lives. In the case of Catherine’s recent whereabouts, however, the British press largely showed an unusual …

About the claim that chatbot Claude 3 showed self-awareness…

Skywatchers: We spotted a UFO! Naw. That’s been around forever, yawn. Here’s one that’s comparatively new to the headlines: Engineer: My chatbot shows self-awareness! Ars Technica has the latest version: On Monday, Anthropic prompt engineer Alex Albert caused a small stir in the AI community when he tweeted about a scenario related to Claude 3 Opus, the largest version of a new large language model launched on Monday. Albert shared a story from internal testing of Opus where the model seemingly demonstrated a type of “metacognition” or self-awareness during a “needle-in-the-haystack” evaluation, leading to both curiosity and skepticism online… During the test, Albert says that Opus seemingly suspected that it was being subjected to an evaluation. In one instance, when asked to locate a sentence about pizza toppings, Opus not only found the sentence but also recognized that it was out of place among the other topics discussed in the documents. Benj Edwards, “Anthropic’s Claude 3 causes stir by seeming to realize when it was being tested,” Ars Technica, March 5, 2024 Not everyone’s eyes …
