Ofsted report cards are a superficial change – the inspectorate needs a culture shift

Ofsted report cards are a superficial change – the inspectorate needs a culture shift

Ofsted, England’s education inspectorate, has released proposals for a new approach to inspecting schools and other education providers. The proposals are now under consultation, with parents, teachers, education professionals and learners invited to share their views. These proposals mark the latest changes to Ofsted after the public outcry following the suicide of headteacher Ruth Perry in January 2023. The coroner’s report in December 2023 ruled that the Ofsted inspection had contributed to Perry’s suicide. But the proposals neglect key areas that we, having researched people’s experiences of Ofsted, believe should change. These include the behaviour of inspectors and the process of inspecting schools. Crucially, the proposal document emphasises the continuing importance and authority of Ofsted in raising achievement in the school system. And in a recent speech on the proposals, education secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “The improvements in inspection and accountability starting in the 90s have been instrumental for raising standards in our schools. With Ofsted’s role right at its heart. And to those who call for the abolition of a strong, independent, effective inspectorate, …

What is Project Stargate? Why this $500-billion AI initiative could herald a ‘platform shift’

Yuichiro Chino/Getty Images This week US President Donald Trump announced a joint venture between OpenAI, Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group, and Abu Dhabi’s AI-focused sovereign wealth fund MGX, to put as much as $500 billion over multiple years into US data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence.   Trump appeared at the White House with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank chairman Masayoshi Son, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison. Oracle is one of the technology partners for the joint initiative — dubbed Stargate — along with Microsoft, ARM Holdings, and Nvidia.  Also: Anthropic warns of AI catastrophe if governments don’t regulate in 18 months The funding, meant to provide “colossal” data centers of 500,000 square feet, comes on top of an enormous amount of capital spending planned by the largest tech firms.  According to one Wall Street analyst, Jackson Ader of the KeyBanc Capital Markets brokerage, “Capital spending for the major hyperscalers” — that is, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Oracle, Meta, and Alibaba — “will be $286.5 billion in 2025, and $308.8 billion in 2026, after making some adjustments …

Episcopal Divinity School launches public online course equipping Christians to shift public theological narrative around reproductive justice

Episcopal Divinity School launches public online course equipping Christians to shift public theological narrative around reproductive justice

[January 21, 2025 – Online] — With the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the resulting elimination of legal access to abortion in 25 states and counting, Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) is offering a public, non-credit, six-week online course to equip people of faith with the education and practical tools needed to shift the theological narrative around this pressing issue. The course, The Sacred Work of Reproductive Justice, will be taught by the Rev. Dr. Rebecca Todd Peters, a renowned feminist social ethicist and advocate for reproductive justice, and will run from February 4 to March 11, 2025. As Christians lead the current rush to criminalize abortion, this course will reframe the issue as one of reproductive justice—a framework developed by Black women activists in 1994—and explore the church’s responsibility in changing the public narrative about abortion in the country. Why Take This Course? Most liberal Protestant denominations—including Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, Unitarian Universalist, and Episcopalian—have official positions in support of reproductive rights. Yet, these perspectives are often unheard, considered taboo, or held privately—leaving the theological …

How to shift your circadian clock to beat your jet lag

How to shift your circadian clock to beat your jet lag

Trying to sleep your way through jet lag might not actually work Iakovos Hatzistavrou/AFP Via Getty Images In the first flush of our relationship, my husband began taking a series of photos of me during our travels. In every one, I am asleep: sat on a chair at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Head on my chest in the back seat of a car in Kiev, Ukraine. On a train in France, mouth open, drooling. He is lucky I still married him. This article is part of special series investigating key questions about sleep. Read more here. Jet lag certainly isn’t pretty. Other than leaving you feeling exhausted – or wide awake – at the wrong time of day, a long flight across time zones can also cause gastrointestinal distress, off-kilter body temperature, headaches, irritability and cognitive impairment, all of which are much more serious for people who fly all the time, such as airline pilots. What can we do? Many of us approach jet lag by prioritising sleep whenever we can, in order to …

Jesus’s teachings shift evangelicals’ attitudes away from Republican positions

Jesus’s teachings shift evangelicals’ attitudes away from Republican positions

A new study published in Political Behavior reveals that religious messages emphasizing Christian values can shift white evangelical Republicans’ attitudes on refugees. By highlighting teachings such as Jesus’ call to love one’s neighbor, researchers found that evangelical Republicans became more supportive of refugee resettlement and expressed warmer feelings toward refugees, though support for government benefits remained unchanged. These findings suggest that moral framing rooted in faith may offer a pathway to bridging partisan divides on controversial issues. The study was conducted by a team of political scientists: Brian Newman, a professor at Pepperdine University; Stephanie DeMora, an assistant professor at Stony Brook University; Jennifer Merolla, a professor at the University of California, Riverside; and Elizabeth J. Zechmeister, the Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor at Vanderbilt University. The researchers sought to examine the tension between Christian values and partisan Republican stances on refugee issues. “We were drawn to this topic because we see an interesting tension in messages that reach white evangelical Christians: the party they tend to support (Republican) takes a restrictionist stance on refugees, while a …

China announces first monetary policy shift since 2010 to spur growth

China announces first monetary policy shift since 2010 to spur growth

BEIJING: China will adopt an “appropriately loose” monetary policy next year as part of steps to support economic growth, state media reported on Monday (Dec 9) citing a Politburo meeting, marking the first such shift towards loosening since 2010. China will implement a more proactive fiscal policy and step up “unconventional” counter-cyclical adjustments, Xinhua reported, citing the Politburo. China must also “vigorously” boost consumption and expand domestic demand “in all directions”, Xinhua said. The remarks came from an official readout of a meeting of top Communist Party officials, the Politburo, and before the annual Central Economic Work Conference later this week to set key targets and policy intentions for next year. In 2025, authorities must adhere to “the principle of pursuing progress while maintaining stability”, leveraging progress to ensure stability and drive innovation, Xinhua said. “A more proactive fiscal policy and an appropriately loose monetary policy should be implemented, enhancing and refining the policy toolkit, strengthening extraordinary counter-cyclical adjustments,” it said. The new wording for the monetary policy marks the first easing of the stance …

Enabling the green shift with marine minerals

Enabling the green shift with marine minerals

Copper is vital for the green energy transition, and as demand rises, companies are exploring the potential of marine minerals. The world is going through a major transition towards digitisation, electrification, and green energy. The major component going into all these subjects is copper: the metal that has the best electric conductivity, is easy to form, and is resilient for long-lasting applications. Copper has a high recycling rate, but copper’s demand will increase, and new reserves need to be added to the current reserves to ensure the future required stock. The last major copper discovery was made in 2018, and there will be a future squeeze on demand if the mining industry doesn’t manage to add to the reserve bank. The preliminary signs of the squeeze can be seen by looking at trading prices and the sudden plummeting of the treatment charge – not enough copper is being mined for it to be transformed into the final product. Green Minerals As the Norwegian Government opened for mineral activity in January 2024, Green Minerals (ENX: GEM) …

Do pro-Palestinian protests signal a shift in U.S. support for Israel?

Do pro-Palestinian protests signal a shift in U.S. support for Israel?

WASHINGTON —  The relationship between the United States and Israel has been a tight embrace almost ever since the founding of the Jewish-led state 76 years ago. Israel has relied on U.S. money, weapons and global diplomatic defense to survive and thrive. Until recently, the support was unflagging from a bipartisan core of Congress and American politicians, and generally from U.S. voters as well. Formed as a refuge for Holocaust survivors, Israel was often portrayed as a victim and an enduring U.S. ally in a tough and dangerous part of the world. Israel’s seven-month-old war against the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip is testing that relationship. Reacting to tens of thousands of civilian Palestinian deaths, young Americans are protesting at numerous college campuses across the country. While there have been pro-Israel demonstrations as well, the largest and loudest have been in support of Palestinians. Here’s a closer look at what the protests might mean for the U.S.-Israel relationship, U.S.-Mideast policy and whether the next generation of Americans will chart a different course. Why are …
