Politicians must set out a brighter vision for children

Politicians must set out a brighter vision for children

More from this theme Recent articles The dire local election results for Labour and the Conservatives will spark plenty of soul-searching. Neither currently offers a compelling vision for Britain’s future – let alone a credible plan to get us there. Here’s one: a Britain where every child feels they belong, grows up proud of who they are and shares in the finest achievements of their fellow citizens, past and present. A country where they can fulfil their potential and live their own version of the good life. That begins with education. Good progress has been made, notably in schools, but we should all be restless to create a system that shatters the link between background and destiny. We need to do five things to fix the foundations. First, raise early years quality by building an evidence-based professional development system for staff, learning from the model for schools and rooting out poor-quality training courses. Second, as others have argued, move to a single, coherent school governance model so every child has access to a great school, …

Most popular ‘old-fashioned’ baby boy names set to trend in 2025

Most popular ‘old-fashioned’ baby boy names set to trend in 2025

Like most trends, baby names rise and fall in popularity. And while many want to go against the grain and choose a unique moniker for their little one, others are keen to opt for a classic or perhaps “old-fashioned” name that isn’t necessarily always ‘trending’, but one that will never go entirely out of style. Those in the public eye also help set and steer trends. For example, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ choice of names for their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, sparked inspiration within the general public. © Getty ImagesWhen the Prince and Princess of Wales announced the name of their third child, the name Louis became hugely popular in the UK Particularly Louis, as, according to the Daily Record, after his birth was announced in April 2018, there was a 56 per cent increase in other little ones with the same registered name across the UK. It’s also no coincidence that the Wales children all have “traditional” British names, especially since, generally speaking, they are named with royal ancestry in …

The Pause on iPhone Tariffs Is Set to Expire After June. Should You Buy Now?

The Pause on iPhone Tariffs Is Set to Expire After June. Should You Buy Now?

Tariffs aren’t the only reason iPhone prices could soon rise. James Martin/CNET If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, waiting to see how the tariff drama plays out before buying a new iPhone, you might be running out of time. It’s less than two months until President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs are set to expire. Apple has been mostly shielded from the triple-digit tariff on China by moving production of US iPhones to India and by making it onto Trump’s exemptions list. But experts say price hikes for the iPhone are likely on the way, regardless of what happens next with tariffs. “The iPhone is due for a price increase,” said CNET Managing Editor Patrick Holland, who’s been reviewing phones for CNET since 2016. “The entry-level iPhone is $829 and has cost that much for years. The last time it had a price [hike] was in 2020.” And here’s the thing: Prices could go up without you even realizing it. Most of us buy new phones using installment plans that reduce the sticker shock of …

Nasa’s planned budget cuts could set back space science, but show how to future-proof the agency

Nasa’s planned budget cuts could set back space science, but show how to future-proof the agency

The 2026 Nasa budget proposal would slash around US$6 billion (£4.4 billion) in funding. This is a huge reduction, amounting to around 25% of recent Nasa budgets. The savings would mainly come from Nasa science programmes, potentially devastating high profile missions and international collaborations. However, the budget proposal also represents an intentional redirection of Nasa’s focus by government through resource allocation. The state has long supported the development of a robust commercial space sector, and this budget is a further step in that direction. Congress will have the final say and the cost to science could be high if the budget goes through without major amendments. One casualty could be Mars Sample Return (MSR), a joint endeavour with the European Space Agency that is intended to retrieve Martian soil and rock collected by the Perseverance rover and deliver it to laboratories on Earth. An audit of MSR released in February 2024, suggested that the mission’s overall cost could exceed US$7.5 billion (£5.6 billion). The timescale for the mission was also slipping into the 2040s. Nasa …

This data set helps researchers spot harmful stereotypes in LLMs

This data set helps researchers spot harmful stereotypes in LLMs

“I hope that people use [SHADES] as a diagnostic tool to identify where and how there might be issues in a model,” says Talat. “It’s a way of knowing what’s missing from a model, where we can’t be confident that a model performs well, and whether or not it’s accurate.” To create the multilingual dataset, the team recruited native and fluent speakers of languages including Arabic, Chinese, and Dutch. They translated and wrote down all the stereotypes they could think of in their respective languages, which another native speaker then verified. Each stereotype was annotated by the speakers with the regions in which it was recognized, the group of people it targeted, and the type of bias it contained.  Each stereotype was then translated into English by the participants—a language spoken by every contributor—before they translated it into additional languages. The speakers then noted whether the translated stereotype was recognized in their language, creating a total of 304 stereotypes related to people’s physical appearance, personal identity, and social factors like their occupation.  The team is …

Moray West wind farm set to power half of Scotland’s homes

In a landmark move towards the UK’s clean energy future, Scottish Secretary Ian Murray has switched on full power at Ocean Winds’ new Moray West wind farm. The Moray West wind farm, located 13 miles off the coast of Buckie, is one of Scotland’s largest offshore windfarms. It will generate up to 882MW output – enough to power 1.3 million homes – half of Scotland’s households. Upon full power, Ocean Winds will become the largest offshore wind operator in Scotland, running two windfarms off the North East coast and with a third in development. Growing the economy with offshore wind Clean energy represents the economic opportunity of the 21st century, with the Moray West project alone creating around 1,500 jobs during the construction phase. The developer, Ocean Winds, has used more than 80 UK suppliers in the project to date, which has involved installing the biggest turbines yet in British waters, spanning up to 257m above sea level. Ian Murray stated: “Investment like that being made by Ocean Winds is absolutely central to ensuring that …

New Universal theme park set to open in UK – with promise of ‘billions’ of pounds for the economy | Politics News

A new Universal theme park in Bedfordshire has been confirmed on what Sir Keir Starmer hailed as a “momentous” day for the UK. It will be the first Universal-branded theme park and resort in Europe and is set to open in 2031, when it is expected to become the UK’s most popular visitor attraction. The government said it will bring an estimated £50bn into the British economy and will create about 28,000 jobs – nearly 20,000 during the construction phase, and 8,000 more in hospitality and the creative industries when it opens. A 500-room hotel and a retail and entertainment complex are planned alongside the theme park, which will be built on a former brickworks. Barcelona beat Atletico to set up cup final against Real Madrid

Barcelona beat Atletico to set up cup final against Real Madrid

MADRID -Barcelona will face fierce rivals Real Madrid in a mouth-watering Copa del Rey final after they beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 at a feverish Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday to complete a 5-4 aggregate win. Following an eight-goal thriller in the first leg of the semi-final in Barcelona, Ferran Torres’s effort from inside the box in the 27th minute was enough to earn the Catalan side a win in the Spanish capital that booked their ticket to the final in Seville later this month. Torres was freed through the middle by Lamine Yamal and took the ball in his stride before striking a low shot into the bottom left corner past keeper Juan Musso. Atletico pushed for the equaliser in the second half, with substitute Alexander Sorloth missing a sitter from close range, but Barca held on to secure a narrow win. “Winning here already tastes great, so you can imagine scoring the winner which books a ticket to a final,” Torres told TVE. “The match was a war, a final was at stake. We did everything we could and …
