Another American Given Lengthy Prison Sentence By Russian Court For Espionage

Another American has been slapped with a lengthy prison sentence in Russia. On Tuesday a Moscow court ruled that Gene Spector, a dual national, is guilty of espionage for which he was given a 15-year prison sentence. The case stemmed from or at least was added onto a prior 2020 guilty plea involving Spector mediating bribes for a previous aide to former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, according to TASS. Kommersant/Associated Press “Independent Russian outlet Media Zona, who had a journalist inside the courtroom, reported that Spector was sentenced to 13 years in a maximum security penal colony on espionage charges,” CNN reports. “His previous charge for bribery was added to this term, meaning he was handed down a 15-year sentence, it reported, adding that Spector was also fined 14,116,805 rubles (around $140,500),” the report continues. Spector is believed to have already been in jail for years amid the pending court proceedings. Little in the way of specific information on the alleged crimes have been made public, with the court citing national security secrecy.  …

Prosecutors request maximum sentence for Dominique Pelicot

Prosecutors request maximum sentence for Dominique Pelicot

A collage reads “A rape is a rape, 20 years for each” on the sidelines of the mass rape trial, as French prosecutors started to set out their sentencing requests to judges on Monday, November 25, 2024. CHRISTOPHE SIMON / AFP Prosecutors said on Monday, November 25, they were seeking the maximum 20-year jail term for the man charged with enlisting dozens of strangers to rape his heavily-sedated wife. Dominique Pelicot has since September been in the dock in the southern French city of Avignon with 49 other men for organizing the rapes and sexual abuse of his now ex-wife Gisèle Pelicot. One man is being tried in absentia. The case has shocked a France still working through its version of the #MeToo movement, with a prosecutor telling the court that the trial needed to herald a fundamental change in relations between men and women. “Twenty years is a lot because it is 20 years of a life… But it is both a lot and too little. Too little in view of the seriousness of …

Project 2025 is a death sentence for religious freedom

Project 2025 is a death sentence for religious freedom

(RNS) — Far-right groups are chomping at the bit for an election that will return Donald Trump to the White House, giving them a chance to achieve their dilapidated vision for America. That vision is contained in what its authors call “a menu of solutions” for the country’s problems, titled Project 2025. The 900-plus page document, written by conservatives and allies of former President Donald Trump at the Heritage Foundation, is loaded with radical policies aimed at dismantling individual freedoms while gutting the federal government’s ability to operate. One of the gravest dangers isn’t spelled out, but can be discerned by reading between the lines: A dream to turn the United States into a religious monolith, where far-right interpretations of the Bible dictate every aspect of our lives.  This isn’t surprising if you take a look at the more than 100 organizations that had a hand in crafting Project 2025’s recommendations. Many have explicit missions to promote a particular fundamentalist Christian worldview, such as the Family Research Council, the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Policy Alliance. Many …

“This court will have to consider a jail sentence”: Judge warns Trump after 10th gag order violation

“This court will have to consider a jail sentence”: Judge warns Trump after 10th gag order violation

Donald Trump has now hit double digits when it comes to times he’s been found to have violated his gag order by attacking jurors and witnesses in his Manhattan criminal trial. “I find you in criminal contempt for the 10th time,” Judge Juan Merchan said Monday, per The Washington Post. In particular, Merchan found Trump violated the gag order by asserting that the jury was “95% Democrats,” NPR reported, a statement that prosecutors argued had created an “air of menace.” As with his previous nine violations, Trump was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. But Merchan — who rejected prosecutors’ arguments that other statements, including one attacking Michael Cohen, violated the gag order — warned Trump that he could be incarcerated if he continues to flout the rules, as much as the court would prefer to avoid the disruption that would cause to the trial proceedings. “Going forward, this court will have to consider a jail sentence,” Merchan said. But, the judge continued, he hopes it does not come to that. “The last thing I want to …

Saudi court ‘secretly’ hands 11-year sentence to women’s rights activist

Saudi court ‘secretly’ hands 11-year sentence to women’s rights activist

A Saudi court has recently sentenced women’s rights activist Manahel al-Otaibi to 11 years in prison in a “secret hearing”, according to two human rights groups who denounced the ruling as contradictory to the kingdom’s “narrative of reform and women’s empowerment”.   Over the past few years, Saudi Arabia has carefully crafted an image of an open, transformed and glamorous society where women can now drive, female dress codes have been relaxed and the government has invested hugely in sports and entertainment.  But over the last two years the government has convicted and sentenced dozens of people for expressing their views against the authorities online, according to a statement published Tuesday by human rights groups. In the statement, Amnesty International and ALQST, a London-based Saudi rights organisation, called for the immediate and unconditional release of Manahel al-Otaibi, a 29-year-old fitness instructor and women’s rights activist who was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Saudi court on January 9.  The court’s decision only emerged publicly in Saudi Arabia’s formal reply to a request from the United Nations human …

Sandro Tonali: Newcastle midfielder given new betting ban by FA – but suspended sentence paves way for return | Breaking News News

Sandro Tonali: Newcastle midfielder given new betting ban by FA – but suspended sentence paves way for return | Breaking News News

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been fined £20,000 and handed a suspended two-month ban for breaching the Football Association’s (FA) betting rules. Italian international Tonali, 23, is currently serving a 10-month suspension imposed by the Italian Football Federation for similar offences. He admitted 50 breaches of FA Rule E8 for placing bets on football matches between 12 August 12023 and 12 October 2023. But Newcastle say the FA ban from all football activity is “fully suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season” – meaning he will not serve any ban next season, as long as he does not commit any further breach of the FA’s betting rules during that time. The decision means Tonali should be allowed to play football again in August. He signed for Newcastle in a deal worth £55m last summer but the Italian Football Federation’s ban – which was reduced to 10 months after an initial 18-month penalty – means he has not played competitive football since October 2023.
