MAN Trucks delivers first production eTGX electric semi

MAN Trucks delivers first production eTGX electric semi

MAN Truck & Bus reached another milestone on its path towards decarbonization by delivering its first regular production Ultra Low Liner eTGX electric semi truck to international logistics service provider Duvenbeck – who plan to add over 100 more such trucks to its fleet in total. (!) Duvenbeck signed a letter of intent (LOI) to purchase 120 of the new Volkswagen Group MAN electric semi trucks back in 2023, and now the first examples of the 40-ton e-trucks have arrived at Duvenbeck’s HQ. The delivery marks the latest big step towards that company’s planned electrification. “The MAN eTruck is an important step towards emission-free logistics,” says Bernd Reining, Senior Director Procurement, Duvenbeck. “It helps us to meet our customers’ requirements and protect the environment at the same time. Sustainability is part of our everyday practice.” The requirements Duvenbeck is referring to include the MAN trucks’ 3 meter interior height – a first for a battery-electric semi truck in this category. “With the Ultra Low Liner eTruck, MAN has developed a solution that is perfectly tailored to the requirements …

Reyes Beverage Group buys 29 Freightliner electric semi trucks

Reyes Beverage Group buys 29 Freightliner electric semi trucks

Daimler Truck North America has helped alcohol distributor Reyes Beverage Group deploy fully 29 zero-emission Freightliner eCascadia Class 8 electric semi trucks in its California delivery fleet. Reyes Beverage Group (RGB) plans to deploy the first twenty Freightliner electric semi trucks at its Golden Brands – East Bay and Harbor Distributing – Huntington Beach warehouses, marking the first phase in the company’s transition to a fully zero emission truck fleet by 2039. An additional nine eCascadia Class 8 HDEVs are scheduled for delivery to RBG’s Gate City Beverage – San Bernardino warehouse before the end of 2024. RBG’s decision to adopt the Freightliner eCascadia builds on its recent transition to renewable diesel and its ongoing idle-time reduction program. These electric vehicles (EVs) “go electric” will contribute significantly toward the company’s stated goal of reducing its carbon emissions 60 percent by 2030. These 2 trucks will save some 98,000 gallons of diesel fuel annually, and avoid putting nearly 700 metric tons of carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions into California’s air each year. “We are excited …

Nonprofit to buy 500 electric semi trucks by 2028 in 0M deal

Nonprofit to buy 500 electric semi trucks by 2028 in $250M deal

Maryland-based nonprofit Climate United announced its intention to spend $250 million to buy up to 500 electric semi trucks over three years in what the group is calling “the biggest single order of zero emission Class 8 trucks in the country.” First, we should state the obvious: as hard as it is to imagine a nonprofit with $250 million to spend on a fleet of 500 electric semi trucks – it’s even harder to imagine one that would need that many trucks. The plan, then, must be to do something else with the trucks. And so it is. Upon taking delivery of the zero emission trucks, Climate United intends to lease those vehicles back to trucking fleets at attractive rates, encouraging truckers that haul containers to and from California seaports to electrify somewhat sooner than later by reducing or eliminating the obstacle of BEV’s higher up-front costs compared to diesel. “High upfront costs make it difficult for independent owner-operators and small fleets to transition to all-electric,” explains Beth Bafford, CEO of Climate United. Climate United says …

Amazon puts first electric semi trucks into ocean freight operation

Amazon puts first electric semi trucks into ocean freight operation

Southern California truck spotters will have plenty of electric semi trucks to watch out for as Amazon adds fifty Class 8 EVs to its commercial fleet. The fully electric Volvo semi trucks purchased will haul both heavy cargo containers and customer package loads in Amazon’s first- and middle-mile operations in California. The trucks will join the hundreds of last-mile electric vans from Ford and Rivian that are already delivering packages across the golden state. These are the first-ever electric trucks in the company’s ocean freight operations, also known as drayage operations. They’ve already started hitting the road at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, with a dozen expected to be in service by the end of the year. “We’re proud to launch our largest fleet of electric heavy-duty vehicles yet in California,” said Udit Madan, vice president of Worldwide Amazon Operations. “Heavy-duty trucking is a particularly difficult area to decarbonize, which makes us all the more excited to have these vehicles on the road today. We’ll use what we learn from deploying these vehicles …

Tesla Semi is getting into the hands of two more big customers

Tesla Semi is getting into the hands of two more big customers

Tesla Semi is getting into the hands of two more big customers as the program finally appears to be ramping up. There’s no sugarcoating it. The Tesla Semi program has seen some fairly serious delays. It was first unveiled in 2017 and it was supposed to come to production in 2019. Instead, it came to production in late 2022 and it has been in extremely limited production since. For over a year, Tesla Semi was only used internally and by Pepsico. However, we have seen the electric vehicle in the hands of several more customers recently. We reported on a Tesla Semi being spotted used by Martin Brower and one by food distribution giant Sysco. Now, Tesla Semi has been spotted being used by a few other customers. A TEsla Semi was seen pulling a Walmart trailer: Walmart holds one of the biggest reservations for Tesla Semi with 130 units pre-ordered. Furthermore, a Tesla Semi was also spotted pulling a Costco trailer this week: Unlike Walmart, Costco hasn’t announced ordering the Tesla Semi. Nonetheless, that’s …

Tesla Semi spotted being used by another customer

Tesla Semi spotted being used by another customer

A Tesla Semi was spotted being used by a customer that is not PepsiCo or Tesla as the electric semi truck program continues to expand. Despite entering production more than a year ago, the Tesla Semi program has been very limited. In October 2023, we learned that Tesla had only built about 70 Tesla Semi trucks and the company was using them internally and with one main customer: PepsiCo. Tesla was supposed to expand production of the truck at a Gigafactory Nevada expansion announced last year, but the automaker only recently broke ground on the construction project. In the meantime, Tesla Semi was only known to be used by Tesla internally and by PepsiCo. We also recently learned that Tesla ran a pilot program with customer Martin Brower (MB). Now, we learn that Tesla is testing Tesla Semi with another customer: Sysco, one of the largest food distributors in the US. After the original unveiling of Tesla Semi in 2017, Sysco announced that it reserved 50 trucks from Tesla: Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY), the leading global foodservice distribution …

Tesla now plans electric semi truck volume production in ‘late 2025’

Tesla now plans electric semi truck volume production in ‘late 2025’

Tesla has updated its timeline for Tesla Semi, its all-electric semi truck, with now a plan to reach volume production in “late 2025.” The Tesla Semi program has seen some significant delays – even since it has officially entered production. It was first unveiled in 2017, and it was supposed to come to market in 2020, but it only officially entered production in late 2022. Despite entering production more than a year ago, the program has been very limited. In October 2023, we learned that Tesla had only built about 70 Tesla Semi trucks and the company was using them internally and with one main customer: PepsiCo. In January 2023, Tesla announced an expansion of Gigafactory Nevada to build the Tesla Semi in volume. However, more than a year later, we haven’t heard much about the effort. Yesterday, with the release of its Q1 2024 financial results, Tesla gave a rare update on the production plans for Tesla Semi. Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, commented: We’re finalizing the engineering of Semi to enable like a …

First ever electric semi truck rides into Mexico with SDG&E

First ever electric semi truck rides into Mexico with SDG&E

Bali Express purchased 11 Peterbilt 579EV Class 8 trucks in September; by Bali Express. San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) says the maiden voyage of their Class 8 heavy-duty electric semi marks the first time an electric semi has crossed the border hauling a standard load, marking an important milestone as the two nations move toward a net zero future. The electric semi truck – one of 11 Peterbilt 579EV Class 8 trucks bought by San Diego-based Bali Express last year – made its first trip to Mexico carrying an unspecified load of goods through the Port of Entry at Otay Mesa, which connects Southern California to the city of Tijuana, Mexico. Bali Express’ electric trucks will utilize SDG&E’s recently activated HD charging infrastructure to provide “reliable and affordable” electric freight options for medium and heavy-duty EVs crossing the US/Mexico border. The SDG&E-powered chargers were partially funded through a $200,000 grant from the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program. That program has put more than $1 billion to alternative fuel and vehicle technology projects designed …

Haaland a doubt for FA Cup semi due to muscle injury, Guardiola says

Haaland a doubt for FA Cup semi due to muscle injury, Guardiola says

MANCHESTER, England : Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is uncertain whether Erling Haaland will feature in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea after his prolific striker asked to leave Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final with a muscle injury. Guardiola subbed both Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne off ahead of extra time in a surprise move in City’s penalty shootout loss to Real Madrid that extinguished their hopes of capturing the treble for a second successive season. “Erling felt something, a muscular issue,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday. “We will see. “Kevin felt exhausted, so tired, after five months out injured (at the start of the season), so that’s normal.” It is not surprising, Guardiola added, that his players are feeling the effects of a gruelling schedule, which is a byproduct of the team’s success. “It’s normal, with the amount of games we’ve played this season and in the previous seasons,” the Spaniard said. “There’s not much time for recovery, we played extra time and the intensity we play. We are not machines, the fatigue is there.” …

Tesla still plans to build 1,800-mile charging corridor for semi trucks despite Biden funding snub

Tesla still plans to build 1,800-mile charging corridor for semi trucks despite Biden funding snub

Tesla is pushing forward with a plan to build an electric big rig charging corridor stretching from Texas to California, despite being snubbed by a lucrative federal funding program that’s part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. But the original scope of the project could still change, TechCrunch has learned. The company had been seeking nearly $100 million from the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant program under the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Combined with around $24 million of its own money, Tesla wanted to build nine electric semi-truck charging stations between Laredo, Texas and Fremont, California. The corridor, if built, would be a first-of-its-kind charging network that could enable both long-distance and regional electric trucking and help clean up a big chunk of the otherwise dirty transportation sector. Without it, though, Tesla’s promise to electrify heavy-duty trucking could fall even further behind schedule than it already is. The project as pitched to the FHWA was called TESSERACT, which stands for “Transport Electrification Supporting Semis Operating in Arizona, California, and Texas,” according to a …
