Banana duct-taped to a wall sells for $6.2m at auction | Offbeat News

A banana duct-taped to a wall has sold for $6.2m (£4.9m) at an auction in New York. The conceptual art piece, called Comedian, became a viral sensation after Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan debuted it at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019. Festivalgoers tried to make out whether the single piece of fruit stuck to a white wall with silver tape was a joke or cheeky commentary on questionable standards among art collectors. The Sotheby’s auction house said it was the announcement of a new original work by the prominent and provocative artist Cattelan that initially captured the world’s attention, but Comedian “quickly erupted into a viral global sensation that drew record crowds, social media inundation, landed the cover of The New York Post, and divided viewers and critics alike”. At one point, someone even took the banana off the wall and ate it. Image: People laugh during auction preview at Sotheby’s in New York. Chinese Startup Offers Trips to Edge of Space for an Absolute Bargain, Sells Out in Minutes

Traveling to space could soon get a lot cheaper. Bargain Spacement Chinese space startup Deep Blue Aerospace recently took to social media to announce the sale of tickets for a 12-minute journey to the edge of space, which could take place as soon as 2027. Tickets were in hot demand, with the company selling two tickets for $210,000 apiece within a 20-minute live stream on the e-commerce platform Taobao. The company plans to sell more tickets sometime next month. While that may sound like a lot of money, it’s a fraction of the $600,000 it costs for a similar flight on board Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo space plane. And soaring to the edge of space on board Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket has been rumored to cost more than twice that per seat. But Deep Blue Aerospace still has a lot to prove. So far, the company has only begun testing a vertical take-off and landing of its liquid oxygen-kerosene “Nebula-1” rocket. Last month, the company’s rocket suffered an anomaly, resulting in a massive fireball on the …

Philip Morris says that under its corporate umbrella, the asthma inhaler business was hindered by “unwarranted opposition to PMI’s transformation” from a Big Tobacco stalwart into a broadly based health company. Health groups have met this stated goal with skepticism. The maker of Marlboro cigarettes is selling Vectura to Molex Asia Holdings Ltd., which plans to operate the inhaler business as part of its Phillips Medisize unit, which produces drugs and medical devices. The two-part sale includes an upfront cash payment of 150 million pounds sterling — around $200 million, at Friday’s exchange rate. The deal also calls …

Professor Will Remove Name from Brauer Museum if School Sells Paintings

Professor Will Remove Name from Brauer Museum if School Sells Paintings

Richard Brauer, a nonagenarian art history professor who has opposed a controversial plan by Valparaiso University in Indiana to sell three key paintings from its collection, said he will request his name be stripped from its museum building, which currently honors him. Brauer’s statement, which was distributed to ARTnews through his attorney on Thursday, comes after a recent court ruling allowing the university to amend the terms of the legal trust that endowed the artworks. The change means the school is legally permitted to move ahead with the art sale. Related Articles One of the works the university plans to sell, Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting Rust Red Hills (1930), was the second work the Brauer acquired for its collection. The university said it was worth about $15 million, making it the most valuable of the three pieces. Frederic Edwin Church’s Mountain Landscape was valued at $2 million, and Childe Hassam’s Silver Vale and the Golden Gate is valued at $3.5 million. The university initiated plans last year to sell the works to raise funds that would go …

Warren Buffett Sells All Paramount Stock, Takes Huge Loss

Warren Buffett Sells All Paramount Stock, Takes Huge Loss

Warren Buffett‘s two-year dalliance with Paramount Global has come to an end. The famed investor and Berkshire Hathaway CEO says that his company has exited its position in Paramount. Buffett disclosed the news during Berkshire’s annual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday. “We sold it all, and we lost quite a bit of money, that happens in this business too,” Buffett told the crowd, adding that he was the one who decided to buy into the company in the first place (there had been speculation that one of Buffett’s deputies may have initiated the trade). “I did it all by myself, folks.” Berkshire surprised Wall Street when it disclosed a $2.6 billion stake in Paramount in May 2022. Later that year, it added even more shares, ultimately becoming the largest shareholder in the company (or at least its non-voting shares, with Shari Redstone and the Redstone family’s National Amusements controlling a majority of its voting shares). Since then, of course, Paramount has been on a stock downswing, as the exorbitant costs to compete in the …

Berkshire’s Profit Plunges 64% on Portfolio Holdings as Buffett Sells Apple

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Berkshire Hathaway’s first quarter profits plummeted along with the paper value of its investments, but the company said Saturday that most of the businesses it owns outright performed well. The company reported reported a $12.7 billion profit, or $8.825 per Class A share, in the quarter. That’s roughly one-third of last year’s $35.5 billion, or $24,377 per A share. The figures were heavily influenced by a large drop in the paper value of Berkshire’s investments. Buffett encourages investors to pay more attention to the conglomerate’s operating earnings that exclude the investment figures. Operating earnings jumped 39% to $11.222 billion from last year’s $8.065 billion as its insurance companies showed strong results. On a per share basis, this year’s first quarter operating figure amounts to $7,796.47 per Class A share, beating three analysts’ estimates by FactSet Research, who predicted $6,701.87 per Class A share. Buffett was a net seller of $17 billion in stocks during the quarter, including trimming about 13% of Berkshire’s massive Apple stake. At $135.4 billion, the iPhone maker …
