Alibaba Selling High-Powered Laser Guns Advertised as “Obstacle Removers”

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech As the world’s de facto portal to the Chinese industrial machine, Alibaba probably doesn’t get as much credit as it should. With hundreds of thousands of sellers looking to supply their dirt-cheap wares directly to businesses, your typical entrepreneur is spoiled for choice. In the market for a military-grade diesel supply truck? They’ve got your back. Interested in an industrial gold trommel? Say no more! But where the commoditized absurdity of Alibaba really shines, in our opinion, is in its cornucopia of bizarre laser products, a massive number of which are configured to look like handguns or even flashy, space-age rifles. Although there are legitimate industrial-grade laser systems available on the conventional market, a motivated chaos enthusiast could easily get their hands on a pallet of handheld alternatives, like the pastel-colored “400W-500W handheld laser obstacle removal machine” sold on Alibaba by Shenzhen Liyang Welding Equipment Co Ltd for $885 to $1,150, depending on the model number and order …

Canada Rethinks Selling Its Crown Jewel Pipeline

Canada Rethinks Selling Its Crown Jewel Pipeline

Authored by Charles Kennedy via OilPrice.com, The Canadian federal government may reconsider a plan to privatize the Trans Mountain oil pipeline. Since the expanded TMX pipeline launched in 2024, exports to Asia—especially China—have surged, with up to 70% of shipments from British Columbia heading to Asian buyers by late 2025. Officials now see TMX as a highly profitable “strategically important asset,” with potential for further expansion The Canadian federal government may reconsider a plan to privatize the Trans Mountain oil pipeline and keep it state-owned amid a surge in appetite for Canadian crude to replace lost Middle Eastern barrels. “The prior narrative had been that this should be returning to private hands,” the head of the government entity that owns Trans Mountain said at an event this week, as quoted by the Financial Post. “That was in a different market and that was in a different time,” Elizabeth Wademan also said. Indeed, this is a very different market from what it was when the government in Ottawa had to step in and buy Trans Mountain …

Scammers are selling counterfeit DDR5 RAM with plastic chips

Scammers are selling counterfeit DDR5 RAM with plastic chips

Counterfeit DDR5 RAM is circulating across online storefronts and gray-market retailers, and some fake modules are convincing enough to pass visual inspection — until you cut them open. According to Digital Trends, the chips installed on the fraudulent sticks aren’t memory at all, but merely fiberglass boards shaped to resemble legitimate DRAM. SEE ALSO: The RAM shortage driving up tech prices won’t end any time soon, Micron says The issue was reported by a Japanese X user who purchased what appeared to be a genuine SK Hynix SO-DIMM laptop module and physically dissected it after becoming suspicious. Inside, they found non-functional fiberglass pieces where the memory chips should have been. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. “At first glance, they look like regular memory sticks, but the chips actually installed on them are just bare circuit boards—plastic boards. I removed them and cut them open to check,” reads a translation of the X post. Some of these counterfeits are reportedly being sold openly on auction platforms like Yahoo …

Your Former Employer Is Selling Your Slacks and Emails to Train AI

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech There’s a new link in the food chain of tech startups. Founders are realizing that they can make an extra buck by selling off the digital remains of their dead companies in the form of their employees’ Slack messages and emails. And now, there’s a whole ecosystem of decomposers that specialize in helping them make that happen, Forbes reports. Getting quality training data is half the battle with building an AI model, and fresh sources are increasingly hard to come by in a post-AI-ransacked internet. The data derived from a digital workplace like Slack is particularly valuable because of the industry’s heavy focus on building AI agents that can carry out work tasks, allowing AI researchers to construct a realistic sandbox the agents can learn in. “Model companies are realizing the noise in the real-world environments is required to accurately test models,” Ali Ansari, whose company micro1 sells a mock holding company for AI agents to learn the …

Inside the 0-a-month clubs selling connection as luxury

Inside the $400-a-month clubs selling connection as luxury

There is no concept of time here. I’m only vaguely aware of the 64 people around me, eyes squeezed shut as sweat beads on my skin. We are — all of us — inside the massive, 185-degree sauna at Othership — one of a growing number of New York “wellness clubs.” These members-only spaces are designed to improve physical and mental well-being and drive connections, or so they say. The group’s loud exhales get faster and deeper by the minute. I squint open an eye to see an impossibly muscular instructor wafting a towel aggressively, heaving avalanches of hot air over us. The instructor asks us to dig deep and share something we’re grateful for. A poreless woman raises her hand to say she’s left a toxic job. The room breaks into applause. Another, her voice tight, says she’s trying to be more confident. Applause again. Behind me, a man says he’s grateful to be here, in a sauna full of strangers. More applause. This is “Guided Gratitude,” one of a slate of wellness classes …

Pace Is Selling a $13.3 M. Modigliani Painting at Art Basel Hong Kong

Just weeks after announcing a symposium for Institut Restellini’s decades-in-the-making Amedeo Modigliani catalogue raisonné, Pace is offering a painting by the artist at Art Basel Hong Kong that was only recently authenticated. The work has a long legal backstory. Titled Jeune femme brune (1917–18), the work is the highest priced piece on offer at the Hong Kong fair, according to ARTnews’s Tessa Solomon, who is on the ground reporting from Art Basel. Pace CEO Marc Glimcher told Solomon that the work is being offered for €11.5 million—about $13.3 million—with several parties bidding on the work. (Glimcher also said that the gallery will be bringing a Modligliani work listed in the new catalogue to each fair this year, in celebration of its publication.) Source link

Aldi roasted for selling Girl Scouts cookie dupe with ‘near identical’ taste

Aldi roasted for selling Girl Scouts cookie dupe with ‘near identical’ taste

Aldi is being ruthlessly mocked online for selling a cookie that tastes just like the Girl Scouts’ iconic Samoas. The popular retailer was called out in a Reddit post featuring a picture of Benton’s Caramel Coconut Fudge Cookies. The cookies, sold at Aldi, were placed next to a box of Samoas from the Girl Scouts, a youth leadership organization for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade. Although the two cookies vary slightly in size, they both had the same chocolate strips and toasted coconut flakes. And according to someone on Reddit who tried both, they have a pretty similar taste, too. “They may look a bit different, but taste damn near identical. Girl Scouts need to up their game. If Aldi can dupe the thin mints, I can tell my coworker’s daughter to get lost!” the Reddit user joked in the caption. In the comments, multiple people said they, too, compared the two cookies and seen the similarities. However, they still made an argument for buying the Girl Scouts ones instead of the Aldi ones. …

eBay Is Selling a Cornucopia of Russian Peptides

eBay Is Selling a Cornucopia of Russian Peptides

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Chonluten respiratory regulators. Ovagen liver capsules. L Cartitine ampoules. Gotratix A-18 supplements. These might sound like back-alley drugs from the latest Star Wars spin-off, but they all have one thing in common: you can buy ’em right now on eBay. Take a quick search for “peptides” on eBay and you’ll be knees-deep in a veritable flood of sketchy substances marketed as amino acid products. There are legitimate medical uses for peptides — GLP-1 drugs, for instance — but the stuff getting hawked on eBay requires no prescription and seems to have no regulatory oversight whatsoever. Some appear to be pills, but the rabbit hole quickly gives way to a battery of injectable substances clearly trying to snare customers drawn in from the growing DIY peptide craze. Like its e-commerce peer Temu, eBay is awash in “peptide” products with murky provenance. For $55 dollars, for example, customers can purchase a box of “A-15 Zhenoluten Ovary peptide bioregulator” pills, purported …
