Ben Giles Latino voters made up roughly a quarter of Arizona voters who cast a ballot in 2020, according to NALEO Educational Fund, a nonprofit that works to increase Latino political participation. That’s a nearly 20% increase in their share from 2016 and a roughly 58% increase in the number of Latino Arizonans voting from 2016. But Junior Lopez, a boxing instructor in Phoenix, wasn’t one of them. He didn’t vote in the midterms either. So how did Lopez, a self-described political novice, end up hosting U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is running for the U.S. Senate, at his gym on the border of Phoenix and Glendale, Arizona? Lopez said he had questions. “I kind of wanted to know, be informed a …

California utilities seek higher fixed monthly fees

California utilities seek higher fixed monthly fees

[ad_1] With little debate two years ago, state lawmakers passed a complex energy bill that enabled a sweeping change in how most Californians are billed for electricity. The legislation was what Pacific Gas & Electric had asked for from the state public utilities commission three months before: a transformation of electric rates so that households would pay a fixed charge each month in exchange for lower rates for each kilowatt hour they used. Gov. Gavin Newsom submitted the bill as part of a massive 2022 budget revision. In four days, it was passed out of an Assembly committee hearing without discussion, approved by the full Assembly and Senate and signed by Newsom. The state’s three largest investor-owned power companies that pushed for the change say it will encourage Californians to ditch cars and appliances that run on planet-warming fossil fuels and replace them with vehicles, stoves and heaters that operate on electricity from solar panels and wind turbines. They also say the new monthly fee would allow them to more evenly allocate fixed costs among …

Alternative clouds are booming as companies seek cheaper access to GPUs

Alternative clouds are booming as companies seek cheaper access to GPUs

[ad_1] The appetite for alternative clouds has never been bigger. Case in point: CoreWeave, the GPU infrastructure provider that began life as a cryptocurrency mining operation, this week raised $1.1 billion in new funding from investors including Coatue, Fidelity and Altimeter Capital. The round brings its valuation to $19 billion post-money, and its total raised to $5 billion in debt and equity — a remarkable figure for a company that’s less than ten years old. It’s not just CoreWeave. Lambda Labs, which also offers an array of cloud-hosted GPU instances, in early April secured a “special purpose financing vehicle” of up to $500 million, months after closing a $320 million Series C round. The nonprofit Voltage Park, backed by crypto billionaire Jed McCaleb, last October announced that it’s investing $500 million in GPU-backed data centers. And Together AI, a cloud GPU host that also conducts generative AI research, in March landed $106 million in a Salesforce-led round. So why all the enthusiasm for — and cash pouring into — the alternative cloud space? The answer, …

The 44-year-old Logan Lucky star denied her claims for spousal support and accused her of “delaying tactics” and trying to “seek a windfall from me” in the latest round of their ongoing legal dispute regarding financial settlements after becoming officially divorced in November 2019. Dewan alleged that Tatum worked with others to hide his income from Magic Mike, the 2012 film in which Tatum played a male stripper based on his early career experience. Various international offshoots of the movie, including sequels, musicals and other shows, have emerged since. However, the Jump Street actor has denied the claims in the years-long battle over earnings, division of assets, spousal support and child support for their 10-year-old daughter. Since the divorce, the pair have …

The law firm at LaRocca, Hornik, Greenberg, Kittredge, Carlin & McPartland asked to withdraw from the case filed by Arlene “A.J.” Delgado last Friday in a court motion, because of what it called “an irreparable breakdown in the attorney-client relationship between the Firm and the Campaign.” The filings said the firm “respectfully requests leave to explain to the Court in camera” the details of that breakdown. In camera proceedings are conducted by judges without members of the public or press present. Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker said she would conduct an in camera conference on the firm’s request starting at 3 p.m. ET Wednesday “with the defendants and their attorneys.” …

Harvey Weinstein prosecutors seek retrial after rape conviction overturned | Ents & Arts News

[ad_1] US prosecutors plan to retry Harvey Weinstein after his 2020 conviction for rape was overturned in New York. The disgraced movie mogul, who has been in jail for four years, appeared in a Manhattan court for the first time since that conviction was overturned by an appeals court last week. A retrial could happen as soon as September. “We believe in this case and will be retrying this case,” prosecutor Nicole Blumberg said. In April, the state’s highest court ruled that Weinstein did not receive a fair trial – finding the hearing was prejudiced by “egregious” improper rulings by the judge, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that were not part of the case. Just days after the landmark #MeToo ruling was overturned, he was taken to hospital, with his lawyer Arthur Aidala describing him as “somewhat of a train wreck health-wise” but still “sharp as a tack” mentally. Infected blood scandal: Campaigners concerned government may seek to delay paying compensation | UK News

[ad_1] It has taken decades, the loss of thousands of lives and an exhausting battle to have their harrowing, heartbreaking stories heard. Now the end is almost in sight. In just over three weeks, Sir Brian Langstaff will deliver his long-awaited report into the infected blood scandal. But for those who have suffered so much, there is still so much to fear. Jason Evans lost his father to AIDS when he was just four years old after Jonathan Evans’s NHS treatment for haemophilia included blood products contaminated with HIV. Obstacles remain as women seek more leadership roles in America’s Black Church

Obstacles remain as women seek more leadership roles in America’s Black Church

[ad_1] (AP) – No woman had ever preached the keynote sermon at the Joint National Baptist Convention, a gathering of four historically Black Baptist denominations representing millions of people. That changed in January when the Rev. Gina Stewart took the convention stage in Memphis, Tennessee, — the Southern city home to Christ Missionary Baptist Church where she serves as senior pastor — and delivered a rousing message, asserting that Jesus not only included women in his ministry, but identified with their suffering. But what happened next put a spotlight on the obstacles women in Christian ministry continue to face as they carve out leadership space within the patriarchal culture of the Black Church in America. Several women pastors told The Associated Press that it should serve as the breaking point. “This is an example of no matter how high you rise as a woman, you’re going to meet patriarchy at the top of the hill,” said Martha Simmons, founder of Women of Color in Ministry, which helps women navigate the process of getting ordained. “The …

Student protesters seek amnesty to keep arrests, suspensions from trailing them

[ad_1] Maryam Alwan figured the worst was over after New York City police in riot gear arrested her and other protesters on the Columbia University campus, loaded them onto buses and held them in custody for hours. But the next evening, the college junior received an email from the university. Alwan and other students were being suspended after their arrests at the ” Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” a tactic colleges across the country have deployed to calm growing campus protests against the Israel-Hamas war. The students’ plight has become a central part of protests, with students and a growing number of faculty demanding their amnesty. At issue is whether universities and law enforcement will clear the charges and withhold other consequences, or whether the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives. Terms of the suspensions vary from campus to campus. At Columbia and its affiliated Barnard College for women, Alwan and dozens more were arrested April 18 and promptly barred from campus and classes, unable to attend in-person or virtually, and banned …
