China wants to restore the sea with high-tech marine ranches

A diver swims off the shore of Wuzhizhou Island, where fish populations multiplied tenfold after artificial reefs were introduced.YANG GUANYU/XINHUA/ALAMY Chinese universities are world leaders in applied sciences, from agricultural research to materials science. But fundamental questions aren’t always easy to answer in China’s “quite unique” research and development environment, says Neil Loneragan, president of the Malaysia-based Asian Fisheries Society and a professor emeritus of marine science at Murdoch University in Australia.  The central government’s controlling influence on the development of ranching, Loneragan says, means researchers must walk a tightrope between their two bosses: the academic supervisor and the party chief. Marine biologists want to understand the basics, “but researchers would have to spin that so that it’s demonstrating economic returns to industry and, hence, the benefits to the government from investment,” he says.  Many efforts aim to address known problems in the life cycles of captive-bred fish, such as inadequate breeding rates or the tough survival odds for young fish when they reach the ocean. Studies have shown that fish in these early life …

Causes, impacts, and future projections of Arctic sea ice loss

Causes, impacts, and future projections of Arctic sea ice loss

Arctic sea ice loss is expected to continue over the next decades, with implications for the climate system and Arctic communities and ecosystems. Arctic sea ice: A defining feature of the Arctic Arctic sea ice forms from freezing ocean water during the dark, cold Arctic winters. In the 1980s, the sea ice stretched across the entire Arctic Ocean in winter, even reaching parts of the adjacent North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans. Each spring, as sunlight returns, the ice melts, but even at its lowest point in September, it still covers half of the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic Ocean’s year-round sea ice cover is a key feature of the Arctic as a region dominated by ice and snow. The rapid decline of Arctic sea ice in recent decades Over the past four decades, Arctic sea ice has declined significantly in both area and thickness. Since the start of continuous satellite observations in late 1978, we have seen a 50% reduction in the sea ice area in September (Fig. 1). Therefore, during the seasonal minimum in …

The Wide Wide Sea by Hampton Sides

The Wide Wide Sea by Hampton Sides

Setting Sail on a Journey of Discovery and Dilemma In the vast expanse of human history, few endeavors have captured our collective imagination quite like the Age of Exploration. It’s a period that conjures images of intrepid adventurers braving uncharted waters, unfurling maps of newfound lands, and bridging worlds previously unknown to each other. At the heart of this era stands the towering figure of Captain James Cook, whose voyages redefined our understanding of the globe. In “The Wide Wide Sea,” Hampton Sides embarks on a literary journey to unravel the complexities of Cook’s final expedition—a voyage that would ultimately lead to the explorer’s demise on a Hawaiian beach. Sides, a master of narrative non-fiction, sets out to do more than simply recount the events of Cook’s third voyage. He aims to navigate the treacherous waters of legacy, colonialism, and cultural collision. The result is a book that is as much an adventure story as it is a thoughtful examination of the consequences of exploration. Charting a Course Through History “The Wide Wide Sea” opens …

Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T.J. Klune

Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T.J. Klune

A Magical Return to Marsyas Island There’s something profoundly comforting about returning to a beloved fictional world, like slipping on a well-worn sweater or sinking into your favorite armchair. T.J. Klune’s “Somewhere Beyond the Sea” offers readers exactly that cozy feeling, whisking us back to the enchanting Marsyas Island and the found family we fell in love with in “The House in the Cerulean Sea.” But make no mistake—this isn’t just a rehash of familiar territory. Klune has crafted a sequel that expands on the themes of its predecessor while diving deeper into the complex world of magical beings and the societal prejudices they face. A Story of Resistance, Love, and Chosen Family At its heart, “Somewhere Beyond the Sea” is a tale of resistance against oppression, wrapped in layers of warmth, humor, and the unwavering bonds of chosen family. Klune’s signature wit and whimsy are on full display, but there’s a sharper edge to this installment, a recognition that sometimes love isn’t enough to change the world—sometimes you have to fight for it. The …

New images of deep sea wonders are surprisingly adorable

New images of deep sea wonders are surprisingly adorable

Normally the animals that live at the deepest depths of the ocean can be be a little tough to look at. During an expedition in the Southern Pacific Ocean, an international team of oceanographers found some cephalopods, corals, and more that were a bit more photogenic. The team took the first live footage of a very rare squid that you can view here. The cephalopod is from the Promachoteuthis genus, and only three species have been scientifically described to date. One species–Promachoteuthis sulcus–is known for its somewhat human-like teeth. Only a few specimens of these elusive squid have been collected, most of which are from dead specimens found in nets. [Related: Incredible footage shows new squid species tending to enormous eggs.] The team was mapping an underwater mountain range 900 miles off the coast of Chile when they spotted the Promachoteuthis squid. They also recorded the first documented sighting of the internet famous “Casper” octopus for the first time in this part of the Southern Pacific. Numerous corals, deep-sea sponges, fish, and even two rare …

An Army of Sea Urchins Could Help Save Coral Reefs

An Army of Sea Urchins Could Help Save Coral Reefs

This article was originally published by Hakai Magazine. South of Tampa Bay, in Florida, wedged between a quiet neighborhood and a mangrove forest, custom-designed aquariums are home to thousands of sea-urchin larvae that tumble and drift through the water. Scientists with the Florida Aquarium and the University of Florida care for the little urchins, checking them daily under microscopes for signs that they’re maturing into juveniles, which look like miniature versions of the adults. Few will make it. For every 1 million embryos conceived in the lab, only about 100,000 become larvae. Of those, only up to 2,000 become adults. And at this particular moment, coral reefs in the Caribbean need all the urchins they can get. Long-spined sea urchins (Diadema antillarum) play a vital role in Caribbean coral ecosystems. Whereas overpopulated urchins elsewhere are treated as villains—in California, for instance, divers smash purple urchins with hammers to keep them from mowing down kelp forests—Diadema are the Caribbean’s unsung heroes. Dark and rotund, with spines radiating in all directions, some as long as knitting needles, …

South China Sea: Is the Philippines becoming a gateway for the West’s Indo-Pacific interests?

South China Sea: Is the Philippines becoming a gateway for the West’s Indo-Pacific interests?

“New Zealand shares the same objective of supporting the Philippines’ Hague ruling,” Cabalza said, referring to the international tribunal that ruled in favour of Manila in its maritime dispute with China, invalidating Beijing’s nine-dash-claim over the South China Sea – an outcome China has rejected. “Wellington, along with 13 other countries, had been an observer in the past Balikatan exercises with Manila. Given that strategic direction, there is no stopping block for New Zealand as a strategic partner of the Philippines,” Cabalza said. The Philippines’ inclusion under Pegase 24 – a yearly French Air and Space Force mission to the Indo-Pacific to demonstrate air power projection – is the latest in several moves by Paris to build closer security ties with Manila since military cooperation discussions began in December. “Paris’ interest in Manila’s military modernisation grew when it offered assistance on its submarine programme and supported its maritime rules-based advocacy as an Indo-Pacific power,” Cabalza said. This year, a contingent of French aircraft will land at Clark Airbase, a former US military base 93km northwest …

Supporters of arrested Sea Shepherd founder say parallels with Julian Assange are ‘disturbing’ | Whaling

The arrest of the anti-whaling activist Paul Watson in Greenland – where he could face extradition to Japan – has been condemned as “politically motivated” by supporters, who compared the case to the detention of the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange. “The parallels are disturbing,” said Omar Todd, chief executive and co-founder of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF). “We have our own extradition drama going on,” Todd said. “Governments don’t like people to tell the truth or do the right thing. “Assange’s case was political and Paul’s case is the same. If Julian had been extradited to the US, he knew he was going there to die. If it comes to it and Paul gets extradited to Japan, he could get 15 years in prison … it’s like a life sentence.” The office of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, said he was pressing Danish authorities not to extradite Watson to Japan. Macron is “following the situation closely” and “intervening with the Danish authorities”, his Élysée Palace office said. Brigitte Bardot, the former actor and French …

China seeks detention of foreigners in disputed South China Sea | South China Sea News

China seeks detention of foreigners in disputed South China Sea | South China Sea News

Philippines files new legal submission before the UN, asserting its own entitlements while challenging China’s claim. New maritime rules issued by China that allow its coastguard to detain foreigners for trespassing in the disputed South China Sea have taken effect – but their international legitimacy is being questioned by neighbouring countries. China claims almost the entirety of the South China Sea, brushing aside competing claims from several Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines and a 2016 ruling by an arbitration tribunal in The Hague, which declared that its stance had no legal basis. The Chinese government has been deploying the country’s coastguard and other boats to patrol the waters it claims as its own, and has turned several reefs into militarised artificial islands. In recent years, Chinese and Philippine vessels have had a series of confrontations in disputed areas that have raised fears of a wider conflict. From Saturday, China’s coastguard can detain foreigners “suspected of violating management of border entry and exit”, according to the new regulations published online. Detention is allowed for up …
