SBC seminaries see new generation of leaders with R. Scott Pace installed at Southeastern

Scott Pace was inaugurated president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, promising that “in everything we do, it’s all going to be about one name”: Jesus. The change of the guard, following the retirement of Daniel Akin earlier this year, signals a new chapter for Southeastern, which has grown to be the fifth largest theological school in the U.S., with nearly 1,600 seminary students this year. Pace, 51, who completed his Master of Divinity and Ph.D. from Southeastern, and most recently served as provost and chief academic officer, is one of three new seminary presidents at the Southern Baptist Convention’s six seminaries.  The new cohort is succeeding an older group of leaders, many of whom, like Akin, were key champions of the conservative takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention in the early 1980s. In his 23-minute address, Pace promised to remain faithful to …

Ridley Scott Movies, Definitively Ranked

Ridley Scott Movies, Definitively Ranked

Inside Ridley Scott, there are two directorial wolves: The stylistically distinct auteur with towering influence over contemporary cinema, and the semi-anonymous studio journeyman who’s put out a movie a year well into his 80s and possibly his 90s. These days the pendulum of film-snob appreciation may have swung toward a third Scott, Tony—in terms of pure style, he’s my preferred Scott, even if his era-defining megahit, Top Gun, probably deserves to be downed by a xenomorph. But there’s no denying that Tony’s older brother Ridley Scott has made a handful of the most game-changing and beloved films ever, in genres as disparate as dystopian sci-fi, road movie, and large-scale historical action. In some ways, Ridley’s newest film (for now, that is; this rundown is destined to become outdated as quickly as a “complete” Soderbergh list) dips into all three of those; The Dog Stars is a post-apocalyptic thriller that’s also something of an episodic road picture. It’s also been called dull and workmanlike, which is what marks it as a true Ridley Scott movie—not because …

Carlos Alcaraz Just Unveiled a Second Travis Scott x Nike Tennis Shoe

Carlos Alcaraz Just Unveiled a Second Travis Scott x Nike Tennis Shoe

Historically speaking, when Travis Scott drops a brand new shoe, he tends to test the waters with a single colourway. Even his hype-iest projects begin the same way: put one pair out there, let the sneakerverse descend into chaos, and see what happens. But just one week after Carlos Alcaraz took the wraps off the Travis Scott x Nike Zoom Vapor 12, he’s already pulled out another one. The first colour combo was the clean ‘Pale Ivory’ finished with the ‘Cacao Wow’ details seen across Scott’s many ‘Mocha’ releases. This new one switches things into dark mode. From a distance, the entire upper looks black, but zoom right in and it seems to be a very deep brown – the sorta brown that only remembers it’s brown when the light hits it. Julian Finney/Getty Images Most of the sneaker is decked out in that near-black shade, including the engineered mesh upper, laces, and reinforced panels around the toe. A big white backwards Swoosh shoots across the outside, with a much smaller regular Swoosh is tucked …

Blacktail by Scott Hawkins – A Book Review by The Bookish Elf

Blacktail by Scott Hawkins – A Book Review by The Bookish Elf

The novel opens on an old lynx named Hate who is planning to eat a wolf puppy. You spend forty pages inside his skull: his bad hip, the bullet still in it, his contempt for his wife, the rough love he feels for his kittens, the roadside night his father died screaming. By the time he goes, you are sorry. That is the whole machine of Blacktail by Scott Hawkins demonstrated once before the story proper begins. Whoever is doing the killing, you will be standing inside them while it happens. How Scott Hawkins Builds an Animal World This is the part that will decide whether the book works for you, and it is done with more rigour than the genre usually attempts. Wolves mark territory with scent poems, which are read like verse and answered in kind, and which the prey beasts find pompous. Distance is measured in longruns. Large numbers are a many-of-manys, and a thousand has to be explained twice. There is a common tongue called the language of the hunt that …

Ridley Scott says Alien 4 ‘killed’ franchise before he revived it with Prometheus

Ridley Scott says Alien 4 ‘killed’ franchise before he revived it with Prometheus

Ridley Scott believes the Alien film series was dead and buried before he made 2012’s Prometheus. The British filmmaker directed the original Alien, released in 1979, which followed the crew of a commercial spaceship as they encountered a deadly extraterrestrial creature. The sci-fi horror became a blockbuster franchise, spawning three sequels and the Alien vs. Predator crossover films. In a new interview, Scott claimed he brought the franchise back to life after 1997’s Alien Resurrection performed badly at the box office. “I did the best one by far,” the director told French outlet Brut, definitively. “Full stop. End of the f***ing story. “Then they let it die,” he continued. “After [Alien] 4, they killed it. So I sat there thinking, I’m going to bring it back. So I sat down with a very good writer; two guys [and] eventually ended up with Damon Lindelof, and we caught fire and wrote Prometheus. Ridley Scott directed Michael Fassbender in ‘Prometheus’ (Getty/20th Century Fox) Sigourney Weaver landed her breakthrough role as Ellen Ripley in ‘Alien’ and went on …

Robert De Niro & Adam Scott on How ‘The Whisper Man’ Tackles Generational Trauma

In advance of the release of Netflix’s new thriller The Whisper Man, Mashable executive producer Mark Stetson sat down with stars Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, director James Ashcroft, and author Alex North to discuss the film’s theme of generational trauma, the complex dynamics between fathers and sons, and the process of adapting the highly anticipated novel for the screen. Author of the book, Alex North discussed the book’s themes that were most important to translate to film: “This is a book that I wanted to write because it was about fathers and sons, and grandfathers and fathers and sons. And different iterations of the way that plays out in terms of generational trauma. How we respond to things that have happened in our childhood, how we protect our children from things that have happened in our childhood, how we pass things down and how we don’t.” Adam Scott was particularly drawn to North’s themes. “I thought it was a really interesting part of the script, this horrifying trauma that they are both going through …

All 30 Ridley Scott Movies, Ranked From Worst to Best

All 30 Ridley Scott Movies, Ranked From Worst to Best

If Ridley Scott retired 46 years ago, he would still be one of the most influential filmmakers ever. Now The Dog Stars is his 30th movie. And he was already a veteran director before he came to features. Is it true that he made a thousand TV advertisements, or was it two thousand? Ads paid well, and the fast pace suited him. (He has never liked relaxing.) Half a century later, some Brits still remember his bread commercial. And then, on the big screen, he invented a new world. Smoke, steam, neon shadowlight on cybermorphic grime. Big Tech vast as nation-states. Humanity going obsolescent. Dead machines who’ve seen things that we people cannot believe. And sex and violence, of course. You’ve got to win the crowd. Today his family business, Scott Free, is multigenerational and multinational. He cracks on, tireless, already prepping his next blockbuster. Maybe it’s how he was raised, in the north before the war. Keep calm, carry on, pull yourself together, get on with it. Always drawing when he isn’t filming, leaving …

The Dog Stars review – Jacob Elordi seems confused by this post-apocalyptic bore from Ridley Scott

The Dog Stars review – Jacob Elordi seems confused by this post-apocalyptic bore from Ridley Scott

Sir Ridley Scott has earned the right to make a film as derivative as The Dog Stars. Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982) alone sealed his status as one of the great fathers of modern sci-fi, and there’s nary a Dune or a Project Hail Mary now that isn’t covered in his fingerprints (certainly, there’d be no Project Hail Mary without Scott’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s previous novel, The Martian, in 2015). His new post-apocalyptic drama can be roughly divided into three major set pieces: the bit that feels like 28 Days Later (2002), the bit that feels like Mad Max (1979), and the bit that feels like the video game Fallout: New Vegas (2010). I imagine Scott would defend against such accusations with a shrugged, “well, everyone stole from me, so who’s to say I can’t do a little borrowing too?” Fair enough. That doesn’t make The Dogs Stars any more compelling to watch. The problem lies, I suspect, with Scott’s choice of source material: Peter Heller’s 2012 novel of the same name. It’s …

First Reactions to Ridley Scott, Jacob Elordi Film

First Reactions to Ridley Scott, Jacob Elordi Film

Ridley Scott is back! The visionary filmmaker’s latest feature The Dog Stars hits theaters globally on Aug. 28. and early social media reaction suggests the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film has plenty of Scott’s visual flair but feelings were mixed over the script. The Dog Stars held its world premiere in London on Aug. 20 and 20th Century Studios held a series of press screenings for the film over the last week. Attendees were allowed to post brief reactions on social media after screenings. Full critics reviews for the film are embargoed till Aug. 25. The feature has an all-star cast, including Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Alison Janney, Guy Pearce and Benedict Wong and is based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller. The Dog Stars is set in a time after a flu pandemic has wiped out most of humanity and tells the story of a former civlian pilot named Hig (Elordi) and his ex-Marine companion Bangley (Brolin) as they try to survive the dangers of a fallen world. Scott directed the film from a …
