How Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels’s Biographer Got Him on the Record

How Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels’s Biographer Got Him on the Record

Saturday Night Live, now in its 50th year, is more than TV’s longest-running variety series—or the highest-rated entertainment show on broadcast television among a key demographic. As a new biography of the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels, makes clear, the American public has taken ownership of SNL and refused to relinquish its grip. The show has become a personal artifact for generations, something like a beloved (and sometimes disappointing) relative or longtime buddy with whom you share in-jokes, rather than a TV comedy show created in 1975 for the sole purpose of filling a gaping hole in the weekend NBC schedule. Out Tuesday from Random House, Lorne, by veteran New Yorker articles editor Susan Morrison, provides a rare peek behind the curtain at an enigmatic, Oz-like figure described by former employees as (among other things): aloof, cypher-like, having no center, cold, manipulative, a psychological terrorist, strange, inscrutable, distant, evil, even a “starfucker of the highest order.” And yet Michaels is revered in certain quarters, a larger-than-life persona compared favorably to such fictional characters as Jay Gatsby, …

When William S. Burroughs Appeared on Saturday Night Live: His First TV Appearance (1981)

When William S. Burroughs Appeared on Saturday Night Live: His First TV Appearance (1981)

Though he never said so directly, we might expect that Situationist Guy Debord would have included Saturday Night Live in what he called the “Spectacle”—the mass media presentation of a totalizing reality, “the ruling order’s nonstop discourse about itself, its never-ending monologue of self-praise.” The slickness of TV, even live comedy TV, masks carefully orchestrated maneuvers on the part of its creators and advertisers. In Debord’s analysis, nothing is exempted from the spectacle’s consolidation of power; it co-opts everything for its purposes. Even seeming contradictions within the spectacle—the skewering of political figures, for example, to their seeming displeasure—serve the purposes of power: The spectacle, wrote Debord, “is the opposite of dialogue.” So I wonder, what he might have made of the appearance of cult writer and Beat pioneer William S. Burroughs on the comedy show in 1981? Was Burroughs—a mastermind of the counterculture—co-opted by the powers that be? The author of Junkie, Naked Lunch, and Cities of the Red Night also appeared in a Nike ad and several films and music videos, becoming a “presence in American pop …

Inside SNL: Al Franken Reveals How Saturday Night Live Is Crafted Every Week

Inside SNL: Al Franken Reveals How Saturday Night Live Is Crafted Every Week

As Saturday Night Live celebrates its 50th anniversary, Al Franken takes you inside the making of an SNL episode. He should know a thing or two about the subject. Part of the original SNL writing team, Franken spent 15 years writing and performing for the show. (Anyone remember Stuart Smalley giving a motivational pep talk to Michael Jordan?) On his podcast, Franken walks you through what a typical week on Saturday Night Live looks like. The week begins with the kickoff meeting on Monday, then moves mid-week to the writing and selection of sketches, and ends with dress rehearsals, the live show, and after-party on Saturday. Above, Franken also talks about the role of the host and which ones excelled, and which ones flopped. If you would enjoy knowing how the SNL sausage gets made, the 60-minute conversation is well worth your while. Dave Chappelle’s Sincere Plea on ‘Saturday Night Live’

Dave Chappelle’s Sincere Plea on ‘Saturday Night Live’

The four-time host took a break from punching down to deliver a timely message. Will Heath / NBC January 19, 2025, 5 PM ET No matter how much has changed over the past decade, one thing remains true: Saturday Night Live never brings in Dave Chappelle for a filler episode. The comedian has now hosted the show four times in just more than eight years, each stint coming on the heels of a pivotal election. Last night, in the SNL installment preceding President-Elect Donald Trump’s second inauguration on Monday, Chappelle opened his monologue by detailing his attempts to turn down the daunting gig this time around. The SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels had apparently tried persuading Chappelle to again take the stage following the 2024 presidential election; Chappelle spent the several weeks prior to and after Trump’s reelection rejecting the offer. He eventually relented, he said, so that “I could just get rid of all these old Trump jokes and start fresh.” That lead-in suggested that Chappelle might spend the rest of his …

Everything You Need to Know About Saturday Night Live: A Deep Dive into Every Season of the Iconic Comedy Show

Saturday Night Live began its 50th season last fall, around the same time as the premiere of Jason Reitman’s film Saturday Night, which dramatizes the program’s 1975 debut. All of this has put fans into something of a retrospective mood, especially if they happen to have been tuning in since the very beginning. For others, SNL is a show they haven’t been watching all that long, used to watch, or watched at one time and have started watching again. With its ever-changing cast, writers, sketch concepts, and overall comedic sensibility, it’s never remained the same for too long at a stretch, and though many viewers have their favorite seasons, few grasp the full sweep of its history as a television institution. Now, anyone can get a sense of SNL in its entirety with Everything You NEED to Know About Saturday Night Live, a YouTube series that, true to its title, recounts the show’s most notable performers, characters, innovations, troubles, and moments planned or otherwise (often the latter, given the nature of the broadcast). Each season …

Dan Aykroyd Calls Saturday Night Movie a ‘Stand-Alone Masterpiece’

Dan Aykroyd Calls Saturday Night Movie a ‘Stand-Alone Masterpiece’

Dan Aykroyd has officially given Saturday Night his stamp of approval. The actor and original Saturday Night Live castmember took to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday to share his thoughts on director Jason Reitman‘s latest film, which centers on the 90 minutes leading up to the sketch comedy show’s first broadcast in 1975. “Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumphant SNL film. Wow!” Aykroyd wrote after watching the movie at his local theater. “What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride.  A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level. Pretty accurate too.” The Ghostbusters actor continued, “I was there that night and got to relive it wonderfully again. Congratulations Gil, Jason and Blumie. Don’t miss it whether you know the show or not. It is a stand-alone masterpiece and surefire candidate for Best Picture.” Saturday Night takes place on Oct. 11, 1975, the day SNL premiered, and follows a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers who change television forever. Dylan O’Brien plays Aykroyd, alongside Gabriel LaBelle (Lorne Michaels), Rachel Sennott …

Maya Rudolph Is Hiding in a ‘Saturday Night Live’ Closet as She Prepares Her Return to Show in New Promo

Maya Rudolph is returning to the Studio 8H stage in a major way. In a promo ahead of this week’s Saturday Night Live, the actress comes out of an SNL closet after 17 years to host the show with musical guest Vampire Weekend. In the clip, cast members Andrew Dismukes and Chloe Troast are walking the halls of 30 Rock when they suddenly hear strange laughter coming from a closet door.  Upon opening the door, the two discover a surprised Rudolph.  “Oh, hello there. I wasn’t expecting visitors,” the SNL alum says. When asked how long she’s been there, the 51-year-old answers since 2007 — when she ended her tenure at SNL. Rudolph served as a full-time cast member between 2000 and 2007. She previously hosted the sketch show in 2012 and 2021.  “I never left,” Rudolph continues. “Well, why would I leave?
