The Conversation – with trust CEO Sarah Baker

More from this theme Recent articles As we plan for the next academic year, it’s important to remember that transitions large and small play a pivotal role in children’s progress. This recent blog by Whole School SEND on the importance of transition in primary settings serves as an excellent reminder of this. The piece emphasises that while we often focus on the major transitions, such as moving from one year group to another or from primary to secondary school, the smaller ‘micro-transitions’ are just as critical. These can include changes in routine, new staff members or shifts in classroom environments.   This can be dysregulating for children, so as teachers and leaders, it’s on us think ahead, involve the children in the process and collaborate with their families and other stakeholders. Planning for transitions proactively ensures that we can identify and address potential challenges early, creating smoother experiences for everyone involved. This is especially crucial for our SEND students and other vulnerable children, who may face additional hurdles during transitions.   The Whole School SEND blog provides …

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms revival of hit TV series is in the works | Ents & Arts News

Sarah Michelle Gellar has responded to reports about a reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, confirming the hit nineties TV drama is set to return. The actress, who played Buffy Summers, has shared details about why she decided to return to her days as a slayer, almost 22 years after the show ended. The series, created by writer and director Joss Whedon, featured Gellar, 47, as one in a long line of young women chosen by fate to battle evil forces in the fictional US town of Sunnydale. Now the star has posted a message on Instagram confirming her involvement in a revival of the drama, although did not reveal if it will be a reboot or sequel. Image: Buffy means business. Pic: TM/20th Century Fox Film Corp She described a conversation three years ago with director Chloe Zhao “to hear her take on a potential ‘Buffy’ revival”. “Our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to …

Sarah Smith, Labour MP and opportunity champion

Sarah Smith, Labour MP and opportunity champion

Academies have been “instrumental in raising standards” by delivering “brilliant results, particularly for the most disadvantaged children” Bridget Phillipson said this month. But some of the education secretary’s colleagues, sat in the House of Commons to debate the schools bill, were less glowing. One backbencher warned she had “seen academy trust after academy trust take on a failing school, with the most vulnerable children in our country, and fail to make improvements”. That MP was Sarah Smith, Labour’s opportunity mission “champion”.  The Labour government appointed five champions last year for its national “missions”: crime, energy, growth, health and opportunity. They are tasked with promoting and helping to deliver the government’s policies in each area. They will also act as ministers’ eyes and ears, providing feedback to government departments from the front line. Labour gained 211 seats at July’s election. Like Smith, most of those MPs are new to Parliament. Is the new crowd more sceptical of academies? “I think it’s not necessarily just about intake, it’s also about geography,” Smith tells me from her wood-panelled …

Limitless Space, Endless Motion | Sarah L. Kaufman

Limitless Space, Endless Motion | Sarah L. Kaufman

Ballet dancers, for their whole careers, train exhaustively under the scrutiny of teachers and coaches. Yet choreographers are left to teach themselves. It’s extraordinary when you think about it. Nothing like the structured, formal, centuries-old process for developing dancers exists for the creators of ballet’s lifeblood, the new work upon which this painstaking art depends. Dancers who want to try making a ballet cobble together their own systems of learning. They’re typically able to watch established choreographers at work in the studio by being cast in their new dances; they absorb lessons in composition from the rehearsal process and can find experts to give them feedback on their beginning efforts. It’s a sporadic, informal process of trial and error, relying largely on contact with working choreographers. None of this was possible for Alexei Ratmansky, who rose to prominence in the early 2000s and is perhaps the most important creator of ballets to emerge in the twenty-first century. Born in 1968 in Leningrad (as St. Petersburg was then known) to a Russian mother and a Ukrainian …

Why Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson and Princess Eugenie missed Christmas at Sandringham

Why Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson and Princess Eugenie missed Christmas at Sandringham

The King and Queen cheerfully led the royals to church on Christmas Day at Sandringham, but there were some notable absentees this year. While the disgraced Duke of York stepped back from royal duties in 2019 amid his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Prince Andrew’s rare public appearances have included the annual festive walk to church. But just weeks before the royals were set to descend upon Charles’s Norfolk residence, his brother Prince Andrew, his ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York and their youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie, confirmed they would not be joining the family gathering. The Duke of York ended up making headlines again two weeks ago amid his connections to an alleged Chinese spy. It was revealed in a High Court hearing that alleged Chinese spy Yang Tengbo, who was banned from the UK, was said to have been a “close” confidant of Andrew. Mr Yang, who was named after an anonymity order was lifted, has insisted it was “entirely untrue” to claim he was involved in espionage and that he has “done …

When in Rome by Sarah Adams

When in Rome by Sarah Adams

Sarah Adams delivers another charming contemporary romance with “When in Rome,” the first book in her new series that skillfully blends classic Hollywood nostalgia with modern romance tropes. Following the success of her TikTok sensation “The Cheat Sheet,” Adams proves she understands what romance readers crave—authentic characters, palpable chemistry, and enough emotional depth to make the journey meaningful. The Story In this clever twist on Audrey Hepburn’s “Roman Holiday,” pop superstar Amelia Rose (known professionally as Rae Rose) finds herself stranded in Rome, Kentucky after an impulsive escape from her overwhelming celebrity life. When her car breaks down in front of Noah Walker’s house, the grumpy pie shop owner reluctantly offers her shelter, setting up a delicious clash between a burned-out celebrity seeking authenticity and a small-town baker protecting his heart. Character Analysis Amelia Rose Adams crafts a relatable heroine in Amelia despite her celebrity status. Her struggle with identity—being Rae Rose the pop star versus Amelia the person—feels genuine rather than manufactured. The author does an excellent job showing how fame has isolated Amelia …

The Duke of York is at the centre of fresh controversy after Yang Tengbo, one of his former confidants, was barred from the UK for “covert and deceptive activity”. The Chinese businessman, named on Monday after a judge lifted a court order, is said to have leveraged his friendship with Andrew to gain access to Buckingham Palace. In the wake of the revelations, the duke had faced calls to withdraw from a Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace on Thursday and to avoid appearing with the royal family at Sandringham next week. It is understood that his ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, convinced him to step away from the celebrations, giving up …

Who Was Sarah Emma Edmonds?

Who Was Sarah Emma Edmonds?

Sarah Emma Edmonds was one of the most well-documented female soldiers in the American Civil War (1861-1865). While women were forbidden from fighting on the front line, she took up the role by masquerading as a man. Most women served their country or cause by registering as nurses, or taking on other caring, cleaning, and administrative roles. Female family members of fighting soldiers often came with them to help mend the clothes, cook food, clean laundry and even cannons, roles which were seen as typical for woman to carry out.   Women in War – When Did They Take Part? Emma’s portrait as Frank. Source: public domain   Women were not officially allowed to be soldiers until 1948. On June 12, 1948, US President Harry S. Truman signed a bill allowing women to enlist in the Army, although it was longer until they were involved in active combat. It wasn’t until 1993 that they were allowed to be fully involved in all roles and units.   However, that didn’t stop women from serving. Edmonds …
