Well done Sadiq Khan, but Susan Hall shows the Conservative party has given up on London

But in the end it wasn’t Hall who was the problem (and some ill-advised tweets early in her campaign had cast her in a poor light for many), it was her policies: she didn’t really have any. I sat down with her for a 90-minute talk at last year’s Conservative conference in Manchester and she said she was going to campaign on crime and Ulez. Oh, and not being Khan. And er, that was it. Myself and the parliamentary team chatted to her for an hour and a half without managing to glean anything personal or additionally relevant at all. Small-talk enquiries about which football team she supports, favourite restaurants and cultural netherworlds were met with shrugs or, oddly, “Why do you want to know that?” Like I say, we all quite liked her as a person, but worried about her ability to convincingly connect with people. And so it has proved. She is living proof that the Conservatives have given up on London. Source link

Labour’s Sadiq Khan wins re-election as London mayor

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan hopes to convince U.S. tech firms to invest more in London. Leon Neal | Getty Images Sadiq Khan was re-elected as London’s mayor, final results showed on Saturday, helping to cement the Labour Party’s commanding lead over the governing Conservatives in local elections ahead of Britain’s national vote later this year. Khan’s victory, his third in a row, was widely expected despite some public anger over knife crime and the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which charges drivers of older, more polluting vehicles a daily fee. For Labour, London is the latest of a number of councils and mayoralties it has won in the local elections, which took place on Thursday, inflicting heavy losses on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives. “It’s been a difficult few months, we faced a campaign of non-stop negativity,” Khan said in a speech after the results showed he had won 43.8% of the vote against 33% for the Conservatives’ candidate, Susan Hall. “For the last eight years, London has been swimming against the tide of …

Labour’s Sadiq Khan easily wins record third term as mayor of London

London’s Labour mayor Sadiq Khan on Saturday secured a record third term, dealing the Conservatives another damaging defeat in their worst local election results in recent memory months before an expected general election. Issued on: 04/05/2024 – 17:22Modified: 04/05/2024 – 18:32 3 min Khan, 53, easily beat Tory challenger Susan Hall to scupper largely forlorn Tory hopes that they could prise the UK capital away from Labour for the first time since 2016. The first Muslim mayor of a Western capital when first elected then, he had been widely expected to win as Labour surge nationally and the Conservatives suffer in the polls. In the end, he saw his margin of victory increase compared to the last contest in 2021. It adds to a dismal set of results for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as his Tories finished a humiliating third in local council tallies after losing nearly 500 seats in voting Thursday across England. With Labour making huge gains, the beleaguered leader’s Conservatives lost crunch mayoral races in Manchester, Liverpool, Yorkshire as well as the …

Sadiq Khan bags record third term as London mayor – POLITICO

Hall was selected ahead of more high-profile Tory candidates including former London Minister Paul Scully. Scully told the BBC Saturday his party had run an “incredibly underwhelming campaign” in the capital, and accused the Conservatives of focusing too heavily on Khan as an individual. During the campaign, Hall took aim at Khan over his controversial expansion of the capital city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, a charge on drivers in high-polluting vehicles that the Tories successfully railed against in a Westminster by-election last year. Hall said she would scrap the expansion on “day one.” Hall’s candidacy also generated controversy after she liked tweets praising the late right-wing politician Enoch Powell and some containing Islamophobic abuse towards Khan, a practicing Muslim. Knife crime in London also made headlines during the campaign, with a deadly sword attack in the London suburb of Hainault dominating the final days of the race. A spokesperson for Khan said Sunday that Londoners had “clearly rejected the overwhelmingly negative and divisive campaign run by the Tories.” Khan, who formerly served as a Labour …

Labour’s Sadiq Khan Secures Historic Third Term As London Mayor

Sadiq Khan has been re-elected London mayor for a historic third term after comfortably defeating his Labour rival Susan Hall. The Labour candidate received 43.7% of the vote, compared to Hall’s 32.6% – the biggest ever margin of victory in a London mayoral election. It is also the first time in the history of the London mayoralty that an incumbent has increased their margin of victory and seen a swing towards them. The result means Khan is the longest-serving London mayor since the position was introduced in 2000, overtaking Boris Johnson. His victory is another blow for Rishi Sunak, who has endured another miserable local election. The Tories are on course to lose around 500 councillors in England, while Labour have taken control of a number of Conservative local authorities. Labour also won a swathe of mayoralty elections, with Lord Houchen of High Leven’s victory in Tees Valley the only crumb of comfort so far for the Conservatives. The most recent Labour mayoral victories were announced earlier today, with Tracy Brabin (West Yorkshire), Oliver Coppard …
