However, at the time, it was reported that Gosling was soon let go from the project due to creative differences. He ended up being replaced by Mark Wahlberg. “I think I just loved Ryan. And his dog, George,” Ronan, who was 14 when she starred in The Lovely Bones, said on a new episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “And I was just sad that, you know, he wasn’t gonna be around. “But I think the reasons why they parted were totally valid, and I’ve …

The Sad History of Canada’s Inuit High Arctic Relocations

The Sad History of Canada’s Inuit High Arctic Relocations

In the 1950s, at the height of the Cold War, the Canadian government manipulated several Inuit families from northern Quebec (now Nunavik) with lies and false promises into moving to Ellesmere Island, a remote island in the North. The goal was to populate the Arctic and claim sovereignty over these austere lands against the interests of the Soviet Union. Decades after the end of the colonial expansion in North America, Indigenous families were once again being displaced, relocated, and outright lied to by their government. Today they are known as the High Arctic exiles. In 2010, the Canadian government issued an official apology to the families involved in the Inuit High Arctic Relocations, finally acknowledging one of the darkest chapters in Canada’s colonial history.   Canada During the Cold War Map of the Arctic. ‘I was sad in a way I never knew possible’: Yaya Bey on grief, poverty and using music as therapy | Music

“My life has been a whirlwind,” sighs Yaya Bey. Across a turbulent near-decade, the R&B auteur has weathered divorce and bereavement, relocated from Washington DC back home to New York and wrested control of her musical direction. Her 2022 breakthrough, Remember Your North Star, fused homespun neo-soul with hip-hop as she brooded over heartache, depression and a world that no longer made sense, coining a sound as intimate as a voice note from a desperate friend. Her honesty and wit have won her widespread acclaim, and that’s only likely to grow with the release of her ambitious new album Ten Fold. “But I haven’t been able to reflect on all that’s happened,” she says. “I’ve been fighting this uphill battle for years, and it’s been exhausting beyond belief. I still have so much to say, I’m striking while the iron’s hot. But after one more album, I’m taking a break.” Bey has been at the game since she was nine. Her father, Ayub Bey, was Grand Daddy IU of Queensbridge, New York hip-hop collective the Juice Crew. Yaya got her …

“It makes me really sad”: Daniel Radcliffe on J.K. Rowling’s anti-transgender rhetoric

“It makes me really sad”: Daniel Radcliffe on J.K. Rowling’s anti-transgender rhetoric

“Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe has issued a response to series creator J.K. Rowling’s steady stream of anti-transgender remarks. Speaking to The Atlantic about his role in the Broadway musical, “Merrily We Roll Along,” Radcliffe addressed Rowling’s controversial comments. “It makes me really sad, ultimately,” Radcliffe said. “I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.” Radcliffe also noted that he has not had any director contact with her since 2020 when she first shared her first public sentiments against transgender people. The actor at the time published a brief essay for the “Trevor Project,” in which he indicated his allyship with the trans community. “Transgender women are women,” Radcliffe wrote.  “I wanted to try and help people that had been negatively affected by the comments. And to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everybody associated with the ‘Potter’ franchise,” Radcliffe said.  He …

Daniel Radcliffe Is “Really Sad” About J.K. Rowling’s Anti-trans Views

In the years since the Harry Potter franchise concluded, author J.K. Rowling’s numerous anti-trans remarks have left star Daniel Radcliffe with a bitter taste. “It makes me really sad, ultimately,” the newly minted Tony nominee said in a recent interview with The Atlantic. “Because I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.” Amid the initial fallout from Rowling’s rhetoric—which began in 2019 when she defended a researcher who lost her job due to transphobic tweets, and escalated in 2020 when she mocked the phrase “people who menstruate”—Radcliffe issued an apology to the Harry Potter fandom through the LGBTQ+ suicide-prevention group the Trevor Project. “I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now,” he said in 2020, adding, “Transgender women are women. …

‘Yes, this is real’: LA recreates Glasgow’s Willy Wonka disaster – sad Oompa Loompa included | Los Angeles

She was the sad Oompa Loompa seen around the world. Inside a bleak warehouse in Glasgow, a supposed celebration of Wonka’s delectable world of chocolate left children crying and parents calling the police. Attendees paid £35 to visit a bleak warehouse with a handful of props and posters; inside, they were treated to two jellybeans each and a few poorly costumed actors. Images of the event went extremely viral, making international news and inspiring a horror film and an hour-long documentary. Two months later, I found myself walking toward another grim-looking warehouse, this time in downtown Los Angeles. I was here for Willy’s Chocolate Experience LA, a tribute to the Glasgow disaster promising live entertainment, a red carpet-style photo op and a rare chance to meet the celebrity Oompa Loompa herself. An early description of the LA event, which had no official links with the Glasgow event, touted “an immersive journey” into a whimsical world featuring the Oompa Loompa, Kirsty Paterson, “maybe” in conversation with the comedian Nathan Fielder. Also included would be performances by …
