It Costs So Much to Run ChatGPT That OpenAI Is Losing Money on $200 ChatGPT Pro Subscriptions

“People use it much more than we expected.” Fiscal Shortage While trying its darndest to become profitable, OpenAI is still falling comically short — which, since it’s the 800-pound gorilla in the nascent AI industry, should probably give pause to its rivals both large and small. In a post on X-formerly-Twitter, CEO Sam Altman admitted an “insane” fact: that the company is “currently losing money” on ChatGPT Pro subscriptions, which run $200 per month and give users access to its suite of products including its o1 “reasoning” model. “People use it much more than we expected,” the cofounder wrote, later adding in response to another user that he “personally chose the price and thought we would make some money.” Though Altman didn’t explicitly say why OpenAI is losing money on these premium subscriptions, the issue almost certainly comes down to the enormous expense of running AI infrastructure: the massive and increasing amounts of electricity needed to power the facilities that power AI, not to mention the cost of building and maintaining those data centers. Way back …

A performance coach says this exercise will strengthen your ankles and help you run faster

A performance coach says this exercise will strengthen your ankles and help you run faster

Strengthening your ankles probably appears quite low on most exercise to-do lists. But this is a body part everyone should be prioritizing, because the ankle affects balance, foot mobility and overall stability. Plus, strong ankles are less likely to get injured, particularly when running. Unilateral (single-leg) balance exercises are the best way to start strengthening your ankles. You can stand on one leg while you brush your teeth or perform the old man test whenever you put on shoes and socks. Both are quick exercise snacks you can easily habit stack (add a new habit on top of an old one). Biokineticist and sports scientist Raeesa Solwa Mehtar, who specializes in sports and orthopedic rehabilitation, recommended another ankle-strengthening move to try in a recent Instagram Reel, adding a lateral swing of a kettlebell to force your body to compensate for dynamic instability. How to do Raeesa Solwa Mehtar’s move Why runners need strong ankles Ankle stability and strength are crucial for runners because they are never on both feet at the same time. “Tripping on …

America’s Bird-Flu Luck Has Officially Run Out

America’s Bird-Flu Luck Has Officially Run Out

Yesterday, America had one of its worst days of bird flu to date. For starters, the CDC confirmed the country’s first severe case of human bird-flu infection. The patient, a Louisiana resident who is over the age of 65 and has underlying medical conditions, is in the hospital with severe respiratory illness and is in critical condition. This is the first time transmission has been traced back to exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency after weeks of rising infections among dairy herds and people. In Los Angeles, public-health officials confirmed that two cats died after consuming raw milk that had been recalled due to a risk of bird-flu contamination. Since March, the virus has spread among livestock and to the humans who handle them. The CDC has maintained that the public-health risk is low because no evidence has shown that the virus can spread among people, and illness in humans has mostly been mild. Of the 61 people who have so far …

Candidates to Run Washington Post Withdraw After Being Asked How They’d Use AI to Run the Newspaper

Candidates to Run Washington Post Withdraw After Being Asked How They’d Use AI to Run the Newspaper

That pivot to AI isn’t working out too well, huh? Pivotal Moment After its controversial pivot to AI earlier this year, the Washington Post‘s CEO is now turning off editorial candidates by asking them how they would use the technology to run the newspaper. As Axios reports based on insider sources, two candidates for an executive editor position that would run the paper withdrew themselves from consideration after its publisher and CEO Will Lewis, who was selected by owner Jeff Bezos to “save” the paper — and who issued the AI edict soon into his tenure — had them lay out their own strategies for using the tech. Those candidates — Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times executive Cliff Levy and Anne Kornblut of Meta, who used to be a WaPo editor — were apparently not impressed by Lewis’ ask. According to Axios‘ sources, whose names were not published, Levy withdrew his candidacy last week, and Kornblut did so in September. Some candidates for the position were also asked to pen six-page memos about their vision for WaPo, including how they would incorporate AI …

I Always Run These 6 Tests Before Buying New Headphones

I Always Run These 6 Tests Before Buying New Headphones

As an audiophile, I’m super picky about headphones. I usually don’t want to drop cash on them unless I know they can deliver. Over the years, I’ve refined a checklist of quick tests you can do in-store or even at home that help me get a true sense of what a pair of headphones can do. These tests also apply to other audio devices like earbuds or earphones. 1 Sound Quality and Frequency Range Master1305/Shutterstock Most human ears can hear between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. In simple terms, the lower the number, the deeper the bass; the higher the number, the clearer the treble. I’m more interested in how well the headphones handle the frequencies in between because I believe that’s where most music lives. To test this, I usually fire up a few of my favorite tracks from different genres. I’ll start with something bass-heavy, like funk or dubstep, to see if the headphones can deliver those low-end thumps without drowning out everything else. If the bass overwhelms the mids and highs, I …

United Learning to launch charity to run community hubs

United Learning to launch charity to run community hubs

But country’s largest trust stresses the initiative won’t ‘take resource from teaching and learning’ But country’s largest trust stresses the initiative won’t ‘take resource from teaching and learning’ More from this theme Recent articles United Learning, the country’s largest multi-academy trust, is setting up a charity to manage its new community hubs, but stressed it won’t “take resource from teaching and learning”. The 90-academy United Learning is setting up “United Communities” as a subsidiary to run the 26 hubs it plans to have up and running by the end of the 2025-26 academic year. The community hubs provide things like community meals, youth provision, early years groups, walking groups, skill-sharing sessions, cooking and family activities. United Learning said they also provided adult learning, community allotments, community action initiatives, and “parent-led” SEND support. For instance, Hill View community hub in Banbury hosts a weekly group run by parents, for parents, of children with additional support needs and disabilities. This is an opportunity for parents in the area to connect and and offer advice and support, the trust …

Why the Labour government has run aground so quickly – and what it needs to do to get back on course

Why the Labour government has run aground so quickly – and what it needs to do to get back on course

Many prime ministers at some point find themselves in a situation where nothing they do seems to go right. It happened to Jim Callaghan in the late 1970s, to Gordon Brown in the 2000s and to every Conservative prime minister since 2019. After barely 100 days in office, there are troubling signs that Keir Starmer’s government may be in this situation. This is a strange fate for an administration that is still meant to be in its honeymoon phase, having won a huge majority in 2024. While pensioners protest that cuts to their winter fuel payments could shortly leave them without the wherewithal to stay warm, we hear about Starmer and others living it up, with £4,000 worth of Taylor Swift concert tickets, expensive designer glasses and fancy clothes that many Labour supporters could not hope to afford. The party’s poll ratings have plunged and Rosie Duffield has quit as a Labour MP, complaining about the “freebies” scandal. After being out of office for 14 years, has Labour forgotten how to govern? One peculiarity to …

Should Christian men run America? Hell no, say abuse survivors in new documentary

Should Christian men run America? Hell no, say abuse survivors in new documentary

Christa Brown speaks about experiencing abuse, at a rally outside the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, June 11, 2019, in Birmingham, Ala. (RNS photo/Butch Dill) (RNS) — Christa Brown has heard former President Donald Trump and his supporters boast of returning Christians to power in the United States — and returning the nation to what they say are its Christian roots. She wants none of it. Brown, a sexual abuse survivor and longtime advocate for abuse reform in the Southern Baptist Convention, has seen what happens when Christian men have power over women in the church. The thought of them having the same power over the country makes her quake. “I have seen what it means for the largest evangelical Protestant faith group in the country, and it is bloody awful,” Brown says in a new short film about the connections between abuse and Christian nationalism called “For Our Daughters.”  “That is not the country I want,” Brown says. “For Our Daughters” film poster. A Filipino preacher on the run from sexual abuse charges surrenders

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A Filipino preacher accused of sexual abuse and human trafficking in the Philippines and similar charges in the United States surrendered Sunday to authorities in his religious complex in the south and flown to Manila where he was put in police detention, officials said. Apollo Quiboloy and four other co-accused surrendered in the vast religious headquarters of their group, called Kingdom of Jesus Christ, in Davao city after the police gave a 24-hour ultimatum for them to give up, police said. Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos earlier said Quiboloy was caught by authorities. Quiboloy and his co-accused were flown on a Philippine air force C-130 plane to the capital Sunday night and locked up in a heavily guarded detention center at the national police headquarters, where their mugshots and fingerprints were taken, police spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said in a news briefing. “The Philippine National Police gave an ultimatum for them to surrender, otherwise, we would raid a particular building, where we’ve been barred from entering,” Fajardo said, adding that the warning …
