Peso Pluma Gave Us a Ride in His Escalade to the Luar Show

If you have to take an hourlong drive to a show during fashion week, you might as well do it at sunset on the Westside Highway, overlooking the orange-glazed Hudson, blasting “Chan Chan” by Compay Segundo out the window of an Escalade, dripping in diamonds, massive Chanel bag in tow. That’s how Peso Pluma does it, anyway. When I ask the Mexican singer, rapper, and record label CEO–born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija–to introduce himself for a ride-along video to accompany this interview, he takes the mic with bravado: “Hi GQ, I’m him. The Double P. Peso Pluma in the house.” Double P, who dropped his album DINASTÍA last year, is on his way to the Luar Spring/Summer ‘27 show at the Unisphere, a tremendous 120-foot-wide stainless steel globe in Flushing Meadows, right next to the recently concluded US Open. The choice of location was a homecoming for designer Raul Lopez, who hails from Queens. The show, titled “Christopher Street Columbus,” is a convergence of two Christophers: Christopher Street, the epicenter of the queer nightlife scene …

Disney’s Millennium Falcon Ride Activates Fortnite In-Game Rewards

The next Fortnite tie-in is here, and it’s connected with a real-world experience: jump on the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride at either Disneyland or Disney World starting from Sunday, Aug. 16, and you’ll earn exclusive in-game extras. Unveiled by Disney and Epic Games during the annual D23 convention in Anaheim on Saturday night, you’ll be able to use the official Disneyland apps to accept a special mission on the interactive ride to collect crates for your Fortnite account. You can use the crates to earn rewards on a new custom Star Wars island in the game called Smugglers Gambit. “Smugglers Gambit, built in-house by an incredibly talented team, is an immersive, high-quality game,” said Sean Shoptaw, EVP of Disney Games and Digital Entertainment. “These experiences reflect our ambition to connect stories and worlds across formats into one converged entertainment ecosystem.” On Smugglers Gambit, you can play as a smuggler from the Outer Rim (the location represented by Galaxy’s Edge at the Disney Parks). You’ll be able to explore the new Star Wars locations of …

The Shohei Ohtani Economy: a two-mile ride to Dodger Stadium, for $85

It’s almost time for Dodger baseball. I am standing outside a hotel in downtown Los Angeles. I could walk six blocks to Union Station and ride the free Dodger Stadium Express. I could jump into an Uber and pay about $18 for the two-mile ride. Instead, to make that short hop to the ballpark, I am about to board a very nice bus that costs $85. Is it worth it? First, some background: The Japanese travel agency JTB last year signed a sponsorship agreement that makes the company the “official Japanese tourism partner” of the Dodgers. JTB sells tour packages to Japanese fans eager to make the pilgrimage to see Shohei Ohtani play. “Some people go to Disneyland and Universal Studios,” said Masakazu Nakafuji, general manager of JTB’s New York office. “Mainly, people want to see the Dodgers for three straight days at Dodger Stadium.” The tour packages include game tickets, hotel rooms and transportation. However, not every fan from Japan buys the entire tour package, so the company launched a shuttle service: If you …

What a subway ride with white supremacists taught me about America

What a subway ride with white supremacists taught me about America

On the Fourth of July, while I was on my way to a party, I found myself riding a Washington Metro train surrounded by hundreds of masked white supremacists. A subway car is supposed to be one of society’s great equalizers. But it was the last place I expected to reflect on what it means to be an American. A Getty Images photographer captured the moment. As far as I could see, I was the only unmasked person in the sea of Patriot Front members. I had my AirPods in, and my gingham shirt and bandana signaled I was ready to celebrate Independence Day. But my face and body language told a different story.  (Finn Gomez/Getty Images) Roswell Encina is surrounded by masked members of the Patriot Front, a white supremacist group Within hours, the photographs had spread across social media and news outlets. Friends began texting. Reporters called. Many asked whether I had been frightened. The honest answer is yes. But after the initial shock faded, I realized the moment offered something else: an opportunity …

Escaping Kabul: ride or die

When the Taliban took power, Afghanistan’s women cyclists went from competing internationally to fearing for their lives overnight. 🚵‍♀️ An unprecedented plan was put in place to smuggle the professional cyclists out of the country in complete secrecy. A commute becomes a 0 World Cup ride

A $12 commute becomes a $150 World Cup ride

The U.S. is the host country for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this June and July, with venues across the country in 16 locations including Miami, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Toronto, Mexico City and the New York/New Jersey area. Plans for the upcoming event are drawing growing criticism as officials prepare for a surge of global visitors and a sharply restructured system for getting to games. Under normal conditions, fans traveling from Manhattan reach MetLife Stadium for a Giants or Jets game or a special concert like BTS or Bruno Mars use a standard NJ Transit route: a train from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction, followed by a dedicated shuttle train to the Meadowlands station. The trip is relatively straightforward and included in regular commuter fare structures. But for World Cup matches, that familiar system is expected to be fundamentally altered. Some NJ Transit routes serving the stadium could cost as much as $150 for a roughly 15-minute trip from Manhattan’s Penn Station, nearly 12 times the standard fare ($12.90). Officials say the pricing reflects …

How the grid can ride out winter storms

How the grid can ride out winter storms

Texas fared much better this time around. After 2021, the state shored up its grid, adding winter weatherization for power plants and transmission systems. Texas has also seen a huge flood of batteries come online, which has greatly helped the grid during winter demand peaks, especially in the early mornings. Texas was also simply lucky that this storm was less severe there, as one expert told Inside Climate News this week. Here on the East Coast, we’re not out of the woods yet. The snow has stopped falling, but grids are still facing high electricity demand because of freezing temperatures. (I’ve certainly been living under my heated blanket these last few days.) PJM could see a peak power demand of 130 gigawatts for seven straight days, a winter streak that the local grid has never experienced, according to an update to the utility’s site on Tuesday morning. The US Department of Energy issued emergency orders to several grid operators, including PJM, that allow power plants to run while basically ignoring emissions regulations. The department also …

We Could Hitch a Ride to Unknown Frontiers on Super-Fast Interstellar Objects Like 3I/ATLAS

We Could Hitch a Ride to Unknown Frontiers on Super-Fast Interstellar Objects Like 3I/ATLAS

Mysterious interstellar object 3I/ATLAS made its closest approach to Earth on December 19, coming within just 167 million miles. Scientists have been closely monitoring the object — which is largely believed to be a natural comet and only the third of its kind to have been directly observed in the solar system — as it continued on its highly eccentric trajectory. The encounter with Earth, however, turned out to be a bit of an anticlimax, as Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who has long championed the far-fetched theory that the object may be an alien spacecraft, lamented in a blog post titled “3I/ATLAS Ignores Earth.” Instead of doing something you might expect of aliens during their closest approach to Earth, it simply cruised on by. While hopes that we were just visited by an alien race diminish even further, Loeb made an interesting pivot in a follow-up piece, proposing that other objects like 3I/ATLAS could be useful for our future attempts to explore beyond our solar system. “The Voyager Golden Records, containing a time capsule of …

Every ride at Disneyland, ranked

Every ride at Disneyland, ranked

Disneyland since 1955 has stood as a beacon of optimism, a Southern California institution and rite of passage that has shifted with and reflected back our myths and pop culture sensibilities. It is also the theme park I return to multiple times per month. Unlike any other park I’ve visited, Disneyland has a sense of history; it’s a park that has grown and evolved with American pop culture. In this sense every attraction, I believe, is special in some way, even the ones I rarely visit. But my editor had a challenge for me: Rank them. It wasn’t easy. Globally, Disneyland, the great American theme park, has become one of the mightiest exports of the United States. Craft an epic visit to Disneyland and California Adventure with our comprehensive guide. It’s full of expert tips and fresh perspectives. That makes any ranking of its top attractions a deeply personal challenge. How, for instance, does one weigh nostalgia, an individualistic trait, versus public popularity? And what takes greater precedence, historic value or the bleeding edge? How …
