There’s a Major Problem With the Nuclear War Bunkers The Rich Are Buying

“Bunkers are, in fact, not a tool to survive a nuclear war.” Truth Bomb As more and more rich people rush to buy and build bomb shelters, experts suggest they’re little more than a psychological defense mechanism for wealthy people who want to feel a shred of control in an unpredictable world. As the Associated Press reports, the bunker business was worth $137 million last year and is slated to grow to $175 million by the end of the decade, per analysis from BlueWeave Consulting. According to experts who spoke to the outlet, however, these shelters do more to address atomic anxieties than nuclear realities. After all, you’re eventually going to need to crawl out of your bunker and face the horrific situation back on the surface. “Bunkers are, in fact, not a tool to survive a nuclear war, but a tool to allow a population to psychologically endure the possibility of a nuclear war,” explained Alicia Sanders-Zakre of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Radiation after a nuclear bomb detonation, as Sanders Zakre described it, is …

Conservatives are happier, but liberals lead more psychologically rich lives, research finds

Conservatives are happier, but liberals lead more psychologically rich lives, research finds

A recent study in the Journal of Personality sheds new light on the connection between political views and well-being. The findings indicate that those with more liberal views tend to experience lives filled with psychological richness, marked by diverse and stimulating experiences. While happiness and meaning are associated with conservative values, psychological richness appears to be more common among those with fewer conservative views. Previous research on well-being and political beliefs has largely focused on two primary aspects of a fulfilling life: happiness and meaning. Happiness is often defined by life satisfaction and positive emotions, while meaning involves a sense of purpose or fulfillment. Studies have consistently found that conservative beliefs are associated with higher levels of both happiness and meaning. This connection may be due to factors such as system justification, the belief that societal structures are fair, which can create a stable foundation for feeling content and purposeful. For example, conservatives are generally more likely to see social systems as just and reliable, which might lead to a greater sense of stability and …

Sotheby’s Pushes Through Midseason Curated Sale with Help of Rich Paul

Sotheby’s Pushes Through Midseason Curated Sale with Help of Rich Paul

Art market prognosticators who were hoping to divine what the remainder of the year will hold likely found their tea leaves left a bitter aftertaste following Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated auction, which wrapped late Friday afternoon in New York City. The sale, which was organized by marquee sports agent, entrepreneur, and New York Times best-selling author Rich Paul, brought in almost $20.5 million (all figures reported include fees and buyer’s premium) safely in-between the presale estimate of $17 million to $25 million. Related Articles For the most part, the sale progressed at a brisk pace, with each work earning a handful of bids before the hammer dropped and the four auctioneers—two in the first half of the sale, which started at 11 am, and two in the second which started at 2 pm—keeping things moving along. That momentum, however, was not at all matched in the prices achieved. Estimate-wise, it was an afternoon of low accuracy and low precision. A visual representation of the sale would resemble pocked and tattered archery target, with, sure, some holes …

Country Music star, John Rich, wrote Revelation to counter the satanic messaging in popular music – OpentheWord.org

John Rich performing at the Dover Air Force Base, Dover, Delaware, USACredit: Staff Sergeant Esteban M. Esquivel, Wikipedia, Public Domain “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12 NASV) In an interview with former Fox News commentator, Tucker Carlson, country music star, John Rich, says God clearly told him to write his latest song, Revelation, the Christian Post reports. “I was at home in Nashville, not even thinking about writing a song, when suddenly it felt like a hammer hit me in the back of the head,” Rich said who wrote the Bible-inspired song in under an hour. He believes that the purpose of this song was to counter the satanic messages currently infiltrating the music industry. “When you watch the Super Bowl halftime show or the Grammy Awards, you see them putting satanic symbolism right in your face,” Rich said. “They are practicing witchcraft on the stage …

No wonder overloaded women try to marry rich | Women

No wonder overloaded women try to marry rich | Women

I read Emma Beddington’s column with delight (Young women are telling each other to ‘date rich’. How terrifyingly retro, 9 June). I was raised to think that I can achieve whatever I want, always with the reminder that generations of women before me fought for equality. Moving to London for my studies, I became acquainted with the concept of women studying just to find a rich husband and to be a housewife and mother. This idea was utterly foreign, even incomprehensible, to the career‑oriented 19-year-old me. A decade later, I am surrounded by female friends who now regret not having found a rich husband – who are faced with rising living expenses, a ticking body clock, ridiculous housing prices, seemingly out‑of‑reach childcare and fertility costs, and a never-ending parade of hopeful online dating matches. Yes, life is hard working as a man, but for women there are some more items on the list: you need to push for a good career, look fabulous, find a nice husband, have kids, be part of Forbes’ 30 under 30, …

Both parties are in fantasy land – but Sunak’s tax attack on Labour is rich given what his government has cost voters | Politics News

Before we get on to any of the numbers – from Rishi Sunak’s claim about Labour raising taxes by £2,000 to the more outlandish numbers going around today – here’s the most important thing you have to know right now. The parties fighting this election have yet to publish their manifestos. They might come as soon as next week, but until those documents, with their shopping lists of confirmed policies, actually land, we are in a kind of policy no man’s land where each side is guessing (and sometimes plain making up stuff) about what the other side actually wants to implement if they win the election. Election latest:Starmer wins another TV debate poll And since all parties like to talk a lot about exciting new things they’d spend money on and not half as much about the taxes they’d raise to pay for all that stuff, it doesn’t take a mathematical whizz to realise that if you take them all quite literally then you can impute some pretty big “black holes” in their plans. …

Global rich must pay more to tackle climate crisis, says architect of Paris deal | Climate finance

Rich individuals in all countries must pay more to tackle the climate crisis, whether through taxes or charges on consumption, one of the architects of the Paris agreement has said. There is a growing consensus on the need for some kind of global wealth tax, with Brazil, which will host the Cop climate summit next year, an enthusiastic supporter. Meanwhile, poor countries are struggling to raise the estimated $1tn (£785bn) a year of external finance needed to help them cut emissions and cope with the impacts of the climate crisis. Another proposal is for a frequent flyer levy, as the richest people tend to take far more flights – in any year about half of the people in the UK do not fly, for instance. Laurence Tubiana, the chief executive of the European Climate Foundation, said a levy could be targeted at business class and first class seats. Other possible sources of revenue include a carbon tax on international shipping, which could raise billions without disrupting global trade, according to research from the World Bank. …

We’re Losing Pastors Left & Right + Rich Villodas

It’s the big pastor burnout.  Why is it a tough time to be a pastor? Let’s count the ways: a pandemic, a racial justice uprising, an insurrection, hyper partisanship in the pews, cataclysmic global wars. This is not to mention all the normal pulpit pressures, like blurry boundaries, pastoral care, complaining stakeholders, etc, etc. etc. Being a pastor is hard y’all! That’s why Katelyn and Roxy wanted to talk with seasoned New York pastor, Rich Villodas, who has been pastoring an incredibly diverse church in Queens for 16 years. We wanted to hear what unique pressures pastors face and how congregants can offer true support. GUEST:

Give This Rich Dude $1 or The Onion Disappears Forever

There was nothing funny about the way Jeff Lawson left Twilio, the startup he cofounded in 2008 and built into a multibillion-dollar public company enabling businesses to communicate with customers via text messages and phone calls. Activist investors had been pushing for management changes and even a sell-off, and Lawson resigned from his CEO post in January. He now describes his role at Twilio as “shareholder.” No wonder he needs a good laugh. Since he’s a rich person, Lawson has the means to acquire all the chuckles he could ever need, with some belly laughs thrown in. Last week he bought the legendary, though somewhat faded, satire factory The Onion. To do so, he set up a company called Global Tetrahedron, inspired by the name of an evil fictional corporation used as a running gag by Onion writers. Lawson won’t say what he paid. To operate the site, he hired former NBC reporter Ben Collins as CEO, former Bumble and TikTok executive Leila Brillson as chief marketing officer, and Tumblr’s former director of product Danielle …

My future is bleak: can I go on without the all-you-can-eat unlimited Premier Inn breakfast? | Rich Pelley

My future is bleak: can I go on without the all-you-can-eat unlimited Premier Inn breakfast? | Rich Pelley

It’s 8:25am and I’ve made it down, bleary eyed, to breakfast at Premier Inn – all the more miraculous because I haven’t even stayed the night. I’ve just come to eat. My visit comes hot on the news that Premier Inn’s owner, Whitbread, is to cut 1,500 jobs and sell off 126 restaurants as part of a £150m three-year cost-cutting drive, although it sounds as if they’ll still have some in-hotel restaurants for guests only. You know the restaurants: usually large, noisy pubs run by the Brewers Fayre chain, although sometimes Beefeater, the other side of the car park from your digs. If you’re staying at a non-city-centre Premier Inn, they’re usually the only place to eat that doesn’t involve getting back in the car or dicing with death as you meander down a busy A road to a 24-hour McDonald’s. Anyone who has ever stayed at a Premier Inn has thought: “Screw it, we’ll just eat at the hotel.” Plus, only a fool (or cheapskate) doesn’t pre-book the all-you-can-eat unlimited Premier Inn breakfast. Where …
