Two mountain lion cubs rescued from certain death

Two mountain lion cubs rescued from certain death

Mountain lions (Puma concolor, cougars, pumas, among its many other names) are carnivorous, sharp-toothed and clawed big cats. They can be dangerous to livestock, pets, and the occasional human—but their cubs sure are adorable. And absolutely vulnerable, when left orphaned.  That’s what happened to little Clover, an underweight and tick-infested mountain lion cub that arrived at California’s Oakland Zoo in March after being picked up in El Dorado County, northeast of the zoo. She had to receive a blood transfusion from another mountain lion at the zoo also rescued in El Dorado County back in 2024.  Clover has been recovering well, however, “her story is sadly too common,” the zoo explains in a social media post. “Mountain lion cubs rely on their mothers for up to two years to teach them essential survival skills. When a kitten is found alone like this, it often means the mother couldn’t return, too often due to vehicle strikes or other human‑wildlife conflicts …

Rescued birds treated to a pedicure—or talon trim

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. At the New England Wildlife Center in Massachusetts, owls and falcons get pedicure services. No, this isn’t an April fools’ joke! Unfortunately, these rescued birds cannot be returned to the wild, so the wildlife center’s staff steps in to manually conduct the processes that would normally be taken care of by nature—filing down their talons and beaks. Animals also including parrots, cockatiels, and parakeets living under human care grow out their nails and beaks just as they would in the wild.  “But they’re not faced with the abrasive nature of the outdoor world,” Greg Mertz, New England Wildlife Center CEO, tells Popular Science. “They’re not grabbing on the trees and flying from place to place. So the nails grow longer, and because they’re living in such a pampered environment, they need to be physically trimmed by us.” It’s the same as trimming a pet dog’s nails, or when a farrier files down horses’ hooves before fitting them with new …

Goldendoodle abandoned at airport is adopted by cop who rescued her

Abandoned at the airport with nothing but a leash and a lot of confusion, a young goldendoodle has landed somewhere better than any arrival gate — on the couch of the officer who rescued him. The dog was found tied to a carry-on-baggage sizer by the JetBlue ticket counter at Terminal 3 at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport earlier this month, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. A group of Las Vegas police officers responded to reports of the abandoned pooch at 11:39 p.m. on Feb. 2. After speaking with airline staff, they learned that the owner had ditched her dog when told she needed to complete additional paperwork in order to bring him on board as a service animal. Officers then tracked the owner down at Gate D1 where she was waiting to board her flight, sans pooch. When officers questioned her, she became defensive, stating that the airline wouldn’t let her fly with him and that the dog had a tracking device, “implying it was acceptable to leave the animal …

Abandoned pigs rescued on Tennessee’s Looney Islands

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. A team from the Young-Williams Animal Center in Knoxville recently rescued two pigs stranded on a group of islands in the Tennessee River. After receiving multiple calls about the animals that appeared to be abandoned on Looney Islands, the team worked with the Knoxville Fire Department and Knox County Rescue to get to the islands. After some searching, the two pigs were found together and rescued thanks to a bit of patience and the team’s “pig whisperer.” This pig whisperer is Mary Nussbaum, the Young-Williams Animal Center’s Director of Medical Operations. Nussbaum has over 30 years of experience in veterinary medicine, including working at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and its Veterinary Medical Center. “She also is passionate about the care and protection of animals. Since the pigs were stranded on Looney Islands in January, available food resources were scarce, and the rescue team was able to lure the pigs with a whole lot of patience and several …

How Mary Jo Bang Rescued Dante’s ‘Paradiso’

How Mary Jo Bang Rescued Dante’s ‘Paradiso’

The Divine Comedy is more than 14,000 lines long and is divided into three parts, but it’s the first part, the Inferno, that gets all the attention. For centuries, readers have preferred the horrors of hell to the perfection of heaven. Gustave Doré, the celebrated French illustrator, did elaborate engravings for the three canticles in the mid-19th century and devoted 99 out of 135 of them to Dante Alighieri’s darkest scenes. Who can blame Dante’s admirers when hell is filled with so many beautifully flawed characters: Francesca da Rimini, the eloquent adulteress; Farinata, the proud heretic; Ulysses, the defiant king; Ugolino, the father turned cannibal who ate his own sons? And then there are the infernal workers who make sure that Lucifer’s realm runs smoothly, among them farting devils, giants in chains, and a flying monster with the body of a serpent and the face of an honest man. Most readers see little reason to continue with the poem once Dante, guided by Virgil, has safely exited “to once again catch sight of the stars.” …
