Country Star Who Can’t Sing After Stroke Releases New Song Using AI

Country Star Who Can’t Sing After Stroke Releases New Song Using AI

Over a decade after suffering a debilitating and near-fatal stroke, country music star Randy Travis has released a new song that features an AI-generated recreation of his own voice. It’s a fascinating use of the technology. Instead of cloning another artist’s voice without their consent or an estate resurrecting a passed performer’s vocals, Travis and his wife Mary used the tech to breathe new life into the singer’s extensive and decades-long country music career. The track, called “Where That Came From,” features Travis’ iconic voice, which was generated by two separate AI models. These models were trained on vocal stems plucked from the singer’s lengthy discography, dating back to 1985. The results speak for themselves: it’s practically impossible to tell if it was generated by an AI. “All I ever wanted since the day of a stroke was to hear that voice again,” Mary Travis told The Associated Press.   Travis suffered a stroke, the result of a virus that attacked his heart, in July 2013. He had to spend years relearning how to walk, …

Drake releases ‘Family Matters’ and Kendrick Lamar drops ‘meet the grahams’

Rap beef was previously filtered through radio stations and record labels, according to Tyree. Fans would wait for diss tracks to get squeezed into radio programming or released on CDs — if they were released at all. Now, “social media allows us to hear that the second it’s literally completed,” said Tyree. “We can share clips of it. We can commentate. We can add comments on social media posts. So what’s really making this a different moment in hip-hop history is the ability for us to really get it almost simultaneously as a culture.” After every diss drop, fans pick sides. Social media has allowed them to give their feedback in real time and share what kind of low blows they think rappers should incorporate into their disses and responses. They argue about which artist is better and who had the deepest lyrical lashings. But the rise of stan culture — which refers to the dedication of certain artists’ most fervent fans — has made choosing a winner difficult, if not impossible, according to Pablo Hawkins, …

Putin releases illegal chemical choking agent in Ukraine | World | News

Russia has deployed a chemical choking agent in Ukraine as a “method of warfare,” US officials claimed this week. State department officials said Moscow used the choking agent chloropicrin to win “battlefield gains” in their war on Ukraine – which the US said would be a direct violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which Russia signed. Russia has since rejected the accusations and called them “baseless,” saying Moscow stands by its obligations under the CWC. The international law, which some 193 states have ratified, prohibits states from developing or acquiring new weapons. According to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), a chemical weapon is a substance used to cause intentional death or harm. READ MORE: Ukraine special forces wipe out £80m missile system in devastating blow to Putin The US said Russia has used chloropicrin – which is expressly banned under the CWC and listed as a choking agent by the OPCW – to “dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions.” Chloropicrin was widely used during World War I and causes irritation …

TV in Disguise: Hisense releases CanvasTV starting at ,000

TV in Disguise: Hisense releases CanvasTV starting at $1,000

If you want a TV that can blend into your decor, hang on the wall and disguise itself as art rather than a television, Hisense has a new option. The company is releasing its Canvas TV — made to look like a painting when not in use — starting at $1,000. The CanvasTV will offer a slightly less expensive alternative to the Samsung Frame, which was the first of its kind to offer a unique TV-as-art alternative for the design-conscious buyer. Samsung’s highly aesthetic TV is relatively expensive, though, with the 55-inch 2024 Frame costing $1,500. Hisense’s CanvasTV comes in at $1,000 for the 55-inch model and $1,300 for the 65-inch version. The CanvasTV’s “Art Mode” will offer an array of backdrop options in different styles. The TV will also include a built-in sensor that turns off this mode when it detects no one is in the room, to conserve energy. Between the two, Samsung’s The Frame offers a wider range of sizes, from 43- to 85-inch offerings. The Canvas TV will be available in …

Airbnb releases group booking features as it taps into AI for customer service

Airbnb’s summer release is usually a grand affair with tons of updates for guests and a few for hosts. This time, however, the company is introducing just a few updates for group booking along with a new category called icons, which are experiences hosted by celebrated names in music, film, TV and sports. Group booking features, which are probably the only update that will reach all users, allow people to create shared wishlists, a messages tab for the group with the host, and trip invitations for the group with details of the property. Users can now invite friends or family to a wishlist through contacts on their phone or a link. Group members can add properties to a list, leave notes about a property, or vote on them to decide on the booking. The invitation card also has details like address, check-in instructions, and Wi-Fi passwords. Airbnb is also …

China Releases CGI Video of Moon Base and It Contains Something Very Strange

China Releases CGI Video of Moon Base and It Contains Something Very Strange

Wait, is that a… Bill Blurr The China National Space Administration (CNSA) has shown off a CGI video of its vision of a lunar base, a vastly ambitious plan the country is hoping to realize in a matter of decades. The showy — albeit dated-looking — render shows plans for the International Lunar Research Station, a Chinese and Russian endeavor that was first announced in 2021. The video is also raising eyebrows for a bizarre cameo: a NASA Space Shuttle taking off from a launch pad in the distance, as spotted by Space.com. It’s either some next-level humor from the Chinese space program or a hilarious oversight, since the Shuttle has been retired for more than a decade — not to mention that China and NASA aren’t even allowed to talk to each other, nevermind collaborate. As space reporter Jack Kuhr later spotted, the state-run China Global Television Network came up with an equally hilarious fix to hide the Shuttle taking off in the background. “Boom problem solved,” Kuhr tweeted. “CGTN went ahead and slapped …

Energy Dept. Releases New Efficiency Rules for Water Heaters and Other Appliances

Energy Dept. Releases New Efficiency Rules for Water Heaters and Other Appliances

The Biden administration on Tuesday adopted stricter energy-efficiency standards for residential water heaters, the most consequential move in a flurry of changes designed to reduce the energy used by many common appliances including stoves, dishwashers and lightbulbs. The Department of Energy said the new standards, taken together, will save American households and businesses nearly $1 trillion over 30 years, and save the average family $100 a year or more through lower utility bills. The changes will also cut greenhouse gas emissions, the agency said, by an amount equivalent to taking 18 million gas-burning cars off the road over that time. However, the changes have come under withering attack by Republican lawmakers who claim the new rules will make appliances costlier in the short term. Late last year several representatives introduced legislation with names including the “Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act,” the “Liberty in Laundry Act” and the “Stop Unaffordable Dishwasher Standards Act.” The proposed legislation was just the latest salvo in a long running fight waged by conservative groups and politicians who claim the …

Apple Releases New Firmware for USB-C Apple Pencil

Apple Releases New Firmware for USB-C Apple Pencil

Apple today released a firmware update for the USB-C Apple Pencil that came out last year. The new firmware has a version number of 10M6060, up from 10M5164. On device, the updated firmware version number will be 37377.37377.16.0. There is no word on what features, fixes, or updates might be included in the new firmware, and Apple does not offer release notes for ‌Apple Pencil‌ software releases. The USB-C ‌Apple Pencil‌ is nearly identical in design to the ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2, but it is shorter and has a hidden USB-C port for charging and pairing. It cannot wirelessly charge, and it lacks some of the features available with the more expensive ‌Apple Pencil‌ models such as pressure sensitivity. Apple does not have an established procedure for updating ‌Apple Pencil‌ hardware, but in the case of the USB-C ‌Apple Pencil‌, connecting it to an iPad with a USB-C cable and powering on the ‌iPad‌ should be enough to spur the update to download.
