The surprising relationship between your gut microbiome and sleeping well

The surprising relationship between your gut microbiome and sleeping well

Foxys_forest_manufacture/Getty Images There are many things we can blame for a bad night’s sleep – screen time, stress, too much booze. Now there is another culprit: the microbes in our gut. This article is part of special series investigating key questions about sleep. Read more here. We have long known that our microbiome has a powerful influence on our health, and new research is revealing that this extends to our sleep, too. But it is a complex, two-way relationship. “The microbiome is influencing sleep, and sleep is influencing the microbiome,” says Elizabeth Holzhausen at the University of Colorado Boulder. The good news is that there are ways we can intervene. At first glance, the link between your stomach and sleeping patterns might not be obvious, but a growing number of studies are shedding light on the impact they have on each other. For instance, a 2023 study of 720 people found that diversity of microbes in the gut was associated with better sleep. Likewise, a look at nearly 1000 people by researchers at King’s College …

Children of parents not in a romantic relationship are just as happy as those in nuclear families – new research

Children of parents not in a romantic relationship are just as happy as those in nuclear families – new research

It’s become completely normal to find a romantic partner through a bit of swiping on your phone. But could the same be about to happen for parenting? “Elective co-parenting” involves two or more people choosing to have and raise a child together outside of a romantic relationship. And if this becomes commonplace, would it be good or bad? Our new research, published in Reproductive Biomedicine Online, suggests these families actually function just as well. Elective co-parenting is not new – it has a long history within the LGBTQ+ community. What is new is the rise in heterosexual prospective parents and the use of websites – such as Pride Angel, Modamily and PollenTree – to find a co-parent. These sites diversify the paths to parenthood, but researchers, clinicians and policymakers often struggle to keep pace with such innovation. Why not wait for “the one” or go it alone? Our research has shown that cisgender heterosexual elective co-parents talk about the desire to create and improve the “traditional” nuclear family unit of two involved parents raising their …

Ed Sheeran’s love-hate relationship with London after £8.25m office block purchase

Ed Sheeran’s love-hate relationship with London after £8.25m office block purchase

Ed Sheeran has had a whirlwind week, with an appearance on Sky Sports, addressing questions about his non-involvement in Band Aid, and making waves in the property market. The singer, 33, has reportedly expanded his property portfolio by purchasing a luxury office block in London’s bustling Soho for £8.25 million. This prime piece of real estate is set to bolster his growing investment business. The Sun reported that the star acquired the exquisitely refurbished building. It features open-plan office space for up to 50 desks, a fitted kitchenette, a breakfast bar, bespoke glass phone booths, and Crittall-style meeting rooms. The Suffolk singer said he would have “respectfully” declined to appear in the new version of the charity song, and referenced another post criticising foreign aid in Africa. The singer rushed to greet pundit Jamie Redknapp and quipped: “I don’t think [Amorim] wants to speak to me” before heading out of the shot. Sheeran has since apologised, writing on Instagram: “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, …

Are women better at forecasting relationship outcomes? New study provides intriguing insights

Are women better at forecasting relationship outcomes? New study provides intriguing insights

Do women have a better sense of when a relationship will end? A new study suggests it’s not so simple. While women’s commitment levels are a stronger predictor of relationship dissolution in mixed-gender couples, men’s and women’s evaluations of love and satisfaction are equally important. The new findings have been published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. Women are often thought to notice problems earlier, initiate relationship-focused discussions, and take concrete steps toward separation or therapy when issues arise. This belief is supported by evidence showing that women are more likely to end relationships and initiate divorce. From a theoretical standpoint, both social and evolutionary perspectives suggest why women’s relationship views might carry more predictive power. Social psychological theories propose that societal norms assign women greater responsibility for maintaining relationships, making them more attuned to recognizing when a relationship is failing. Evolutionary theories argue that women, due to their greater biological investment in reproduction, are more motivated to ensure their relationships align with long-term goals, which could make them more sensitive to relational …

Men like a confident woman who is capable of loving herself and others. Men do not like mean women. If a man is drawn to a mean woman, it says more about his family of origin …

Cannabis and alcohol use patterns linked to couples’ relationship quality

Cannabis and alcohol use patterns linked to couples’ relationship quality

A recent study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence found that heavy cannabis users tend to experience a drop in relationship satisfaction when combining cannabis with alcohol, while alcohol use alone appears to have a positive effect on next-day relationship satisfaction. In contrast, light cannabis users did not show any significant changes in their relationship satisfaction based on their own or their partner’s cannabis and alcohol use. These findings suggest that the way partners use substances can impact the quality of their relationship in measurable ways. In recent years, cannabis use has become increasingly accepted, with more states in the United States allowing recreational and medical use. This shift in public perception has brought with it a need to understand how cannabis, like alcohol, might affect interpersonal relationships, especially within the context of romantic partnerships. Previous research has shown that substance use—particularly alcohol—can both strengthen and strain intimate relationships. Light or moderate drinking may reduce stress and support positive social interactions, but heavy or problematic use has been linked to relationship dissatisfaction and even aggression. …

Tesla (TSLA) valuation surges to equal next 10 biggest automakers over Trump/Musk relationship

Tesla (TSLA) valuation surges to equal next 10 biggest automakers over Trump/Musk relationship

Tesla’s stock (TSLA) has surged to a $1 trillion valuation – seemingly over the assumption that the Trump and Musk relationship is going to benefit the automaker. The company is virtually worth more than the next 10 biggest automakers combined. Tesla has extended its post-election rally another 7% this morning – resulting in its valuation surpassing $1 trillion for the first time in years. The company has long been the most valuable automaker in the world, but it is now worth more than the next 10 biggest automakers combined: Considering there has been no significant news concerning Tesla this week other than the US elections, it’s fairly clear that the latest rally is related to the election and the close relationship between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and President Elect Donald Trump. What is Trump going to do for Tesla? Tesla added over $200 billion to its valuation since the election. That’s a whole Toyota added to its valuation. What does justify that? What can Trump do that will help Tesla that much? It’s hard to …
