North Korea Teases Potential Thaw in Japan Relations

North Korea Teases Potential Thaw in Japan Relations

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA —  At the beginning of the year, as western Japan reeled from an earthquake that killed more than 200 people and damaged tens of thousands of homes, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida a message of “sympathy and condolences.” Kim’s message, published in North Korea’s main newspaper, was brief and in many ways unextraordinary. However, it was also unusually conciliatory, given that the two countries have no formal ties and that North Korean state media propagandists regularly lob fiery insults at Japanese leaders. More than a month later, North Korea is now giving more hints that it may be willing to improve relations with Japan, although many analysts are skeptical that will happen. In a statement late Thursday, Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korea’s leader, cautiously praised the “positive” statements of Kishida, who last week told Japanese lawmakers it is “extremely important” that he take the initiative to build top-level ties with Pyongyang. “I think there would be no reason not to appreciate …

Saudi Arabia says there will be no diplomatic relations with Israel without an independent Palestinian state

CAIRO: Saudi Arabia has told the US its position stands that there will be no diplomatic relations with Israel unless an independent Palestinian state is recognised on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem, and Israeli “aggression” on the Gaza Strip stops, the Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 7). On Tuesday, White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby said that the Biden administration has received positive feedback that Saudi Arabia and Israel are willing to continue to have normalisation discussions. The kingdom issued the statement to affirm its steadfast position to Washington on the Palestinian issue in the light of the comments attributed to Kirby, the ministry said. The idea of Israel and Saudi Arabia formally cementing ties has been under discussion since the Saudis gave their quiet assent to Gulf neighbours United Arab Emirates and Bahrain establishing ties with Israel in 2020. Saudi Arabia put US-backed plans to normalise ties with Israel on ice, sources familiar with Riyadh’s thinking told Reuters in October 2023, as the war between Palestinian militant …

‘Taiwan independence’ an obstacle to China-US relations, says Beijing | Politics News

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met to discuss competition and cooperation between the two countries. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and United States National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan have held talks aimed at keeping in contact, both sides said, with Wang stressing that “Taiwan independence” posed the biggest risk to Sino-US ties. Wang and Sullivan met in Bangkok, Thailand, on Saturday, just more than two months after US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. The two “had candid, substantive and fruitful strategic communication on implementing the consensus reach at the San Francisco meeting … and on properly handling important and sensitive issues in China-US relations,” China’s foreign ministry said in a statement. The White House said that the meeting between the officials was “part of the effort to maintain open lines of communication” between the two countries. It added that “Sullivan stressed that although the United States and China are in competition, both …

North Korea scraps agencies managing relations with South as Kim Jong Un cites hostility with rival

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has abolished key government organizations tasked with managing relations with South Korea, state media said Tuesday, as authoritarian leader Kim Jong Un said he would no longer pursue reconciliation with his rival. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said the decision to abolish the agencies handling dialogue and cooperation with the South was made during a meeting of the country’s rubber-stamp parliament on Monday. The Supreme People’s Assembly said in a statement that the two Koreas were now locked in an “acute confrontation” and that it would be a serious mistake for the North to regard the South as a partner in diplomacy. “The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country, the National Economic Cooperation Bureau and the (Mount Kumgang) International Tourism Administration, tools which existed for (North-South) dialogue, negotiations and cooperation, are abolished,” the assembly said, adding that the North’s government will take “practical measures” to implement the decision. During a speech at the assembly, Kim blamed South Korea and the United States for raising …

China says Taiwan election result won’t change trend of cross-strait relations

China says Taiwan election result won’t change trend of cross-strait relations

HONG KONG: China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said on Saturday (Jan 13) the victory of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate William Lai Ching-te in an islandwide election would not change the basic landscape of cross-strait relations. In a statement carried on China’s state Xinhua news agency, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said the results showed the DPP cannot represent mainstream public opinion on the island.   The win marks the first time a DPP president will hand over the reins within the party. Current vice-president Lai succeeds outgoing president Tsai Ing-wen, who cannot run for re-election after serving two consecutive terms. Lai, 64, was the frontrunner in public polls going into Saturday’s vote. The former mayor of Tainan is a noted proponent of Taiwan’s independence. His rivals and critics have said his election would endanger Taiwan and threaten peace with China.  MIXED REACTION TO LAI’S PRESIDENTIAL WIN On the international front, reaction was mixed after Taiwanese voters rebuffed China and gave the ruling party a third presidential term. Russian …

In threatening shift, North Korea moves to redefine relations with South

In threatening shift, North Korea moves to redefine relations with South

SEOUL: North Korea is shaking up the way it handles relations with South Korea, enacting changes to policy and government organisations that would effectively treat the South as a separate, enemy state. The moves, which break with decades of policy, could have North Korea’s foreign ministry taking over relations with the South, and potentially help justify the use of nuclear weapons against Seoul in a future war, analysts said. Since the 1950 to 1953 Korean War ended in a stalemate, both nations have had policies that treat each other differently than other countries. That has included relying on special agencies and ministries for inter-Korean relations rather than their foreign ministries, and embracing policies for a future peaceful reunification, usually envisioning a single state with two systems. But in remarks to a year-end party meeting last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said peaceful reunification is impossible, and said the government would make a “decisive policy change” in relations with the “enemy”. He also ordered the military to be prepared to pacify and occupy the South in …

Why David Cameron’s past and present relations with China could be Rishi Sunak’s first big political headache of 2024

Why David Cameron’s past and present relations with China could be Rishi Sunak’s first big political headache of 2024

Almost immediately after being appointed as foreign secretary, David Cameron’s ties with China generated difficult headlines for Rishi Sunak’s government. Cameron’s warmth towards China during his own time as prime minister prompted Luke de Pulford, the director of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, to argue that Sunak had scored an own goal in appointing him. Cameron’s time in office has been described as a “golden era” for UK-China relations. But now, in a very different political climate, de Pulford has accused the new foreign secretary of “shilling for the UK’s biggest security threat”. Catherine West, Labour’s shadow minister for Asia and the Pacific, has also said Cameron has questions to answer over what role he has played since leaving office in a Chinese infrastructure project in Sri Lanka. Cameron’s position on China during his tenure as prime minister evolved from ambivalence to active embrace. Looking back, 2015-16 in particular was an active period in UK-China relations. A state visit by President Xi Jinping in 2015 not only provided Cameron with a chance to take him …

Don’t Expect U.S.-China Relations to Get Better

Don’t Expect U.S.-China Relations to Get Better

The summit showed that Beijing still needs Washington. That’s a problem Xi Jinping is trying to solve. Li Xueren / Xinhua / Getty November 16, 2023, 11:51 AM ET By meeting President Joe Biden in San Francisco yesterday, China’s leader, Xi Jinping, made a tacit, and probably uncomfortable, admission that China still needs the United States, whether he likes it or not. That’s why the summit will likely reinforce his intent to overthrow American global power. For now, the meeting was a win for Biden and his China policy. Biden’s foreign-policy team has argued that the United States can both compete and, at times, cooperate with China, while stressing that continued communication can prevent relations from descending into confrontation. This approach has often appeared overly optimistic: The two sides have continually sparred over Taiwan, technology, and human rights, and dialogue has frequently broken down. Read: Xi Jinping is done with the established world order The fact that the two men met at all is evidence that Biden’s strategy might have merit. Even better, Biden won …

As Lachlan Murdoch takes over from his father he may need to reset News Corp’s relations with Donald Trump

As Lachlan Murdoch takes over from his father he may need to reset News Corp’s relations with Donald Trump

As Rupert Murdoch hands over the reins of News Corp and Fox to his son Lachlan, there is an opportunity to rebuild the relationship between the family’s media empire and former US president Donald Trump. This would make business sense for Fox as Trump is a ratings winner. But it may prove to be more difficult than it first appears. The deterioration of the relationship between the Murdochs and the former president resulted in Trump choosing not to attend the Fox’s Republican debates. But Trump’s refusal to participate in any of the three debates has not affected his chances of gaining the nomination. After the third debate on November 8, absent Trump was judged by 30% of the viewers to be the winner, in a J.L. Partners poll. Further proof, according to one commentator, that missing the debates has illustrated that Fox is more reliant on Trump than vice versa. Trump’s love-hate relationship with Fox has been a long one, particularly his connection with Murdoch and his family. During the late 1970s and 1980s, Trump …
