When 20,000 Americans Held a Pro-Nazi Rally in Madison Square Garden in 1939

Above, two-time Academy Award nominee Marshall Curry presents A Night at The Garden, a film that revisits a night in February 1939 when “20,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism — an event largely forgotten from U.S. history.” As we described it back in 2017, the film documents the following scene: What you’re looking at is the 1939 “Pro-American Rally” (aka Pro-Nazi Rally) sponsored by the German American Bund at Madison Square Garden on George Washington’s 207th Birthday. Banners emblazoned with such slogans as “Stop Jewish Domination of Christian Americans,” “Wake Up America. Smash Jewish Communism,” and “1,000,000 Bund Members by 1940” decorated the great hall. New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia—an Episcopalian with a Jewish mother—considered canceling the event, but ultimately he, along with the American Jewish Committee and the American Civil Liberties Committee decreed that the Bund was exercising its right to free speech and free assembly. A crowd of 20,000 filled the famous sports venue in mid-town Manhattan to capacity. 1,500 police officers were present to render …

The Lonestar State may seem like an unusual stop with less than two weeks until voting closes, although it has a high-profile Senate race featuring incumbent Republican Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Rep. Collin Allred. But the messages and the mediums both campaigns have planned highlight the urgency of their closing messages. Harris plans to focus on Texas’ strict abortion ban at her rally in Houston, as Democrats have spent years hammering Republicans over unpopular crackdowns on reproductive rights — to great success at the ballot box. Trump’s appointment of three conservative justices to the Supreme Court and the subsequent overturning of Roe …

Evangelicals rally behind statement that hopes to combat polarization with revival

(RNS) — A group of evangelical Christians hoping to reclaim their tradition from the culture wars put out a call Monday (Sept. 9) for a broader understanding of evangelicalism urging a rejection of “political idolatry and its messengers” as well as the “false idols of power, wealth, and strength rather than the true God.” The effort, titled “Our Confession of Evangelical Conviction,” is laid out in a new religious statement unveiled last week, signed by an array of evangelical pastors and leaders. ”We reject the false teaching that anyone other than Jesus Christ has been anointed by God as our Savior, or that a Christian’s loyalty should belong to any political party,” the confession reads in part. The signers include Dan Boone, president of Trevecca Nazarene University and board chair of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities; Raymond Chang, a pastor and head of the Asian American Christian Collaborative; and Richard Mouw, a theologian and a former president of Fuller Theological Seminary. Former President Donald Trump isn’t mentioned in the statement, and supporters of the confession, …

Trump shooter saw rally as ‘target of opportunity,’ FBI assesses

The gunman who opened fire on former President Trump researched a number of events from both parties before becoming “hyper-focused” on the campaign rally in Butler, Pa., as a “target of opportunity.”  Speaking with reporters Wednesday, various FBI officials said they have not yet determined what motivated 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks to engage in… Source link

Kennedy, who suspended his campaign as an independent presidential candidate on Friday, joined Trump onstage in Arizona, as pyrotechnics blasted and the Foos song played. In a statement shared with Billboard, a spokesperson for Foo Fighters said: “Foo Fighters were not asked permission, and if they were, they would not have granted it. Foo Fighters respond after Donald Trump uses band’s song at rally | Ents & Arts News

Foo Fighters have reacted after Donald Trump used one of their songs during his presidential election campaign. The American rock band’s song, My Hero, blared as Robert F Kennedy Jr walked onto the stage at Mr Trump’s campaign event in Arizona on Friday after the Republican presidential candidate introduced him. Mr Kennedy, whose father was presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy and uncle President John F Kennedy, appeared at the rally shortly after he announced he was suspending his independent campaign for the presidency to lend his support to Mr Trump in certain states. Asked on social media if they had given Mr Trump permission to use the 1997 track, Foo Fighters’ official Twitter account responded simply saying: “No”. Elon Musk Throws a Trump Rally

Elon Musk Throws a Trump Rally

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration. Just before Elon Musk was set to host Donald Trump last night in an audio livestream on X, the tech billionaire offered some context for listeners. He would not be interviewing the former president, but instead facilitating a conversation. “Nobody is quite themselves in an interview, so it’s hard to understand what they’re really like,” he wrote on X. This was pure expectation-setting, and for good reason: For about two hours, Musk did not ask questions so much as offer softball topics for Trump to do whatever he wanted with. After an hour of technical difficulties, the resulting “X Space” was something of a digital Trump rally—the former president ranting, as if on the stump, about the recent attempt on his life, the price of bacon, border security, and “nuclear warming,” with gentle, stammering interjections from Musk. For two men obsessed with spectacle, the conversation violated the first rule of attention-seeking: It was meandering and tedious, lacking drama or friction, and Musk’s doormat approach …

Why a Liverpool imam reached out to a far-right rally outside his mosque – video | Liverpool

As violent unrest erupted across the country last week after the killing of three girls in Southport, about 50 people turned up to a far-right rally outside the Abdullah Quilliam Society mosque in nearby Liverpool. Hundreds more turned up to support the mosque, which is the oldest in the country. But the imam Adam Kelwick decided not to stay inside. He and other members of his community stepped out with hot food and crossed the police line, determined to speak to the people on the other side. ‘The reason it’s so important to talk right now is because we see what the other option is,’ says Kelwick, who believes that talking to people, even in extreme circumstances, can help heal divisions Source link

The Most Revealing Moment of a Trump Rally

The Most Revealing Moment of a Trump Rally

A week before Christmas, an evangelical minister named Paul Terry stood before thousands of Christians, their heads bowed, in Durham, New Hampshire, and pleaded with God for deliverance. The nation was in crisis, he told the Lord—racked with death and addiction, led by wicked men who “rule with imperial disdain.” “With every passing day,” the minister said, “we slip farther and farther into George Orwell’s tyrannical dystopia.” Explore the Special Preview: September 2024 Issue Check out more from this issue and find your next story to read. View More But because God is merciful, there was reason for hope. One man stood ready to redeem the country: Donald Trump. And he was about to come onstage. “We know what he did for us and how he strove to lead us in honorable ways during his term as our president—in ways that brought your blessings to us, rather than your reproach and judgment,” Terry prayed. “We know the hour is late. We know that time grows shorter for us to be saved and revived.” When he …
