Groundbreaking documentary on Faith to Faithless to air on Radio 4

A groundbreaking radio documentary Faithless will air on Radio 4 this Sunday, following the story of four supporters of Faith to Faithless, Humanists UK’s award winning service supporting people who have left controlling religious environments. For much of their lives, Micki, Esther, and Nicola and Colin, were devoted members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Nigerian Deeper Life Bible Church, and Mormonism, respectively. Each recounts the moments when certainty began to unravel. In raw and honest detail, their stories explore the difficult line between deep religious devotion and unhealthy control. Along the way the balance tipped. Eventually, the effort of holding on became harder than letting go. The participants in the radio documentary are service users or volunteers for Faith to Faithless, the Humanists UK service supporting people who have faced abuse, coercive control, or shunning for leaving a high-control religion.  Micki grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness in New Zealand. In the documentary, she recounts being sexually assaulted, but due to a policy within the Jehovah’s Witnesses it was dismissed. Micki left after more than 30 …

Add The Great British Bake Off to your watchlist It’s perhaps fitting that my meeting with Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson coincides with the kind of sweltering, high-summer temperatures that have long been The Great British Bake Off’s meteorological signature. Heat that melts chocolate, fritzes mixing stands to malfunction and liquefies baked Alaska to the point it has to be chucked in the bin. Heat that prompts overwhelmed amateur bakers to put dampened tea towels around their necks, sweat through aprons and flap haplessly at cakes that refuse to cool. Such temperature is in abundant supply as I make my damp-browed way through the airless, oven-door humidity of a west London studio complex on a 35°C heatwave day. Fans and cooling equipment are, apparently, in short supply in the building. And so, as I’m led into a little hair- and make-up room, it’s perhaps not too surprising to find Hollywood huddled beside a portable air-conditioning unit, while Lawson is sprawled out on a sofa, just a toga-wearing grape-bearer away from the full Cleopatra. Former Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood charged with sexual offences against two more women | UK News

Former Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has been charged with sexual offences against two more women. The Metropolitan Police said the 68-year-old has been charged with indecently assaulting a teenage girl, aged 16 or 17, in 1991 and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old in May 2004. Westwood is now facing a total of 17 charges involving nine women between 1983 and 2016. He previously pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court, where he is due to face trial in January. Irish Radio Station Drops Ed Sheeran After Macklemore Exit

Irish Radio Station Drops Ed Sheeran After Macklemore Exit

Irish radio station Classic Hits Radio has removed Ed Sheeran’s songs from its playlists “for the foreseeable future” after opening act Macklemore was dropped from the Loop tour due to pro-Palestine comments on stage. RTÉ 100 shared that the move came into effect on Thursday, 17 September. Classic Hits Radio said they understand there are “differing and strongly held views” on the topic, but considering “the reaction from our listeners”, the station felt it best to drop the artist for now. Dave Kelly, the Group Programme Director at Bay Broadcasting (which owns Classic Hits Radio), said the step was “carefully considered” and is “not intended as a personal judgement on Ed Sheeran”. He said, “We acknowledge his own explanation of the circumstances surrounding recent events. “As an independent Irish-owned radio station, however, we believe it is important to listen to our audience and to stand alongside Irish artists who have made what is undoubtedly a significant professional decision based on their own convictions. “Ultimately, our position is a simple one. We believe in peace, humanity …

A great time with Uncle Junior from the Sopranos: best podcasts of the week

Dominic & Junior The Sopranos star Dominic Chianese (95) and his son Dominic Chianese Jr (62) helm this new series – a cosy father-son catchup, and all the better for it. Choice cuts include Chianese Sr’s admission that he thought the show was a spoof at first, playing his first scene as crime boss Junior for laughs. As for “Jimmy” Gandolfini, he was “in the same stratosphere as Al Pacino … acting with him was so easy because he was so real and so believable”. This new one – an action-heavy political thriller about beef between Britain and Russia – is described by its creators as “a British Bourne”. Emma Barnett to ‘leave Radio 4’s Today’ following Amol Rajan exit, report claims

Emma Barnett to ‘leave Radio 4’s Today’ following Amol Rajan exit, report claims

Emma Barnett is reportedly set to quit Radio 4’s Today programme, in yet another blow for the news programme following Amol Rajan’s exit last week. The former Woman’s Hour host, 41, joined Today in March 2024, but is now reported to be moving on within the BBC, where she is said to be in talks to front a new current affairs podcast. Sources told The i Paper that an official confirmation of her departure will come in the weeks ahead. When approached for comment, a BBC spokesperson told The Independent that “there’s always rumour and speculation about Today and its presenters”. Barnett joined the daily news programme from ‘Woman’s Hour’ in 2024 (BBC/Raw Media Productions) Barnett’s exit will come on the tale of the departure of Rajan, who hosted his last show in five years on 2 September as he left to set up his own production company. Speaking to Today listeners for the last time alongside Barnett, Rajan – who currently hosts University Challenge and was the editor of The Independent – admitted that …

Radio 1 listeners ‘turn off’ GK Barry as influencer’s new show met with major criticism

Radio 1 listeners ‘turn off’ GK Barry as influencer’s new show met with major criticism

GK Barry’s new spell on Radio 1 got off to an unfortunate start as the influencer’s first show left listeners “turning off” and “switching over”. The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star and It’s Giving Life author is one of the new presenters joining Radio 1 as part of a major shake-up at the station. Announced in July, the overhaul was met with some scepticism from listeners who accused the station of swapping out long-standing radio presenters, like Rickie Haywood-Williams, Melvin Odoom and Dean McCullough, for content creators like Barry and Charley Marlowe. Barry – whose real name is Grace Eleanor Keeling – hosted the first show of her initial six-week run on Thursday (10 September), during which she told listeners she was “shaking in my boots”. Barry hosted the first of her six-show run on Thursday (Getty) On social media, however, the audience reaction was not an impressed one, with listeners saying that while Barry, 27, was an extremely succcessful podcaster, she lacked the radio presenting skill of those axed presenters. …

Add Shaun the Sheep: the Beast of Mossy Bottom to your watchlist In an office reception in an unassuming business park in Bristol, there’s an Oscar on display. Other rooms contain multiple Emmys and Baftas. It’s here in Aardman Animations’ secondary studio space, which is located just down the road from their main headquarters, where the third and largest stop-motion Shaun the Sheep film yet has been made. The Beast of Mossy Bottom has 40 units, or sets, double that of a regular Shaun caper. In the company’s 50th year, why not go big? Shaun the Sheep made his debut on Christmas Eve 1995 in Nick Park’s Wallace and Gromit short film A Close Shave. His cheeky charm and mischievous antics earned him his own series in 2007. “We had to invent a whole world for him, and a whole different look for him,” says animation director Claire Rolls, who worked on the first series of Shaun the Sheep and was part of the early conversations about how he should walk and look. “We have …

Up, up and away | Radio Times

Add 70 Up to your watchlist Can this really be the end of the Up series, for which every glowing endorsement, from “groundbreaking” to “event television”, rings true? When it came out in 1964, following the lives of 14 seven-year-olds, it was the first programme to interview just children and in 2024, it was voted the “pro- gramme that changed television the most” over the past 50 years by the Broadcasting Press Guild. Seven Up! – with its Jesuit premise: “Give me a boy until he is seven and I will show you the man” – was conceived as a class experiment by Australian Tim Hewat, who worked for Granada’s current affairs programme World in Action and was appalled by the inequities in English society. Following its subjects every seven years, Seven Up! was originally directed by Paul Almond before Michael Apted, a researcher for the first series, took over for 14 Up in 1970 and remained in post until his death, in 2021, after completing 63 Up. This final series has been made by …
