4 Questions To Ask Before Deciding To Forgive Someone | The Rev. Christopher L. Smith

When you have become emotionally close to another person, you have become more vulnerable. Vulnerability opens the doors for a person to do things that hurt, which often comes out when conflicts arise. At the same time, you can develop higher expectations about what the other person does and how they should act towards you. This also can lead to unfulfilled expectations which could result in resentment or even anger, even without the other person knowing they have done something to hurt you. So, how are you able to forgive someone you love — and when should you offer that forgiveness to them? RELATED: 10 Tiny Ways To Find Hope When Depression Makes The World Go Dark Four questions to ask yourself before deciding to forgive someone 1. Explore how your spirituality allows you to be forgiven for things you have done If you come from one of the Abrahamic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), forgiveness is rooted in history based on how God has forgiven humans over time. Post Office Horizon scandal: The unanswered questions about legislation to overturn wrongful sub-postmaster convictions | Politics News

Post Office Horizon scandal: The unanswered questions about legislation to overturn wrongful sub-postmaster convictions | Politics News

Details of legislation to exonerate sub-postmasters who were wronged in the Horizon scandal have been set out by the government. Between 1999 and 2015, more than 700 Post Office managers were prosecuted after faulty accounting software provided by Fujitsu made it seem like money was missing from their branches in the UK. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced earlier this year there would be blanket legislation to clear their names. Although some details have now been announced by business minister Kevin Hollinrake in the Commons, there’s still a lot to find out, and key questions remain. Image: Business minister Kevin Hollinrake When? We don’t yet know, for example, when we’ll see the full legislation and when it will be enacted, not least when those who suffered can apply and eventually be vindicated. Essentially, we’re waiting to hear what the legislation says. More on Post Office Scandal As for when we’ll find out, Mr Hollinrake himself gave two answers – the new legislation will be brought forward for scrutiny “shortly” and will become law “as soon as …

Nigeria’s Museum of West African Art Questions Encyclopedic Museums

Nigeria’s Museum of West African Art Questions Encyclopedic Museums

This fall, barring any last-minute delays, Nigeria will open the glitzy Museum of West African Art, a sprawling 15-acre complex with a world-class historical museum, a contemporary art gallery, a research and education institute, and more. Built on the razed site of the former Benin City and constructed to resemble a historic palace, MOWAA represents a new kind of museum: deeply embedded in and designed in concert with the culture it enshrines and celebrates. “We think about MOWAA as a blueprint, a convening point, and the center of outreach that helps grow and sustain museum infrastructure throughout West Africa, working with the living culture of Nigeria—our artisans, our local regional museums—and forging meaningful relationships and partnerships with museums in the West and globally,” Aindrea Emelife, an art historian and head curator at MOWAA, told ARTnews in a recent interview. Related Articles As part of the construction process, archaeological teams excavated the area to bring to the surface Benin City’s surviving walls, moats, and gates, and incorporate them into the new structures, blending the region’s past …

Justin Welby: church should have asked more questions about ex-Post Office boss | Post Office Horizon scandal

The Church of England failed to challenge the involvement of Paula Vennells, the former Post Office boss and an Anglican priest, in Church of England bodies in light of the Horizon scandal, the archbishop of Canterbury has admitted. In his first public comments on the matter, Justin Welby said “more questions should have been asked” about Vennells, including her position on an ethical investment committee in 2019 and 2020. “It is clear that more questions should have been asked about the appropriateness of that involvement when more had come to light about the Horizon scandal. We recognise this and will need to reflect on it,” Welby said in response to a written question to the C of E ruling body, the General Synod, which meets in London this weekend. Welby declined to confirm or deny that Vennells had been interviewed for the post of bishop of London, the third most senior figure in the C of E, saying he was bound by confidentiality. In January, the BBC reported that Welby had “pushed her application and …

Three frequently asked questions about EVs, answered

Three frequently asked questions about EVs, answered

I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about transportation in general, since it’s one of the biggest areas we need to clean up to address climate change: it accounts for something like a quarter of global emissions. And the vehicles that we use to shuttle around to work, school, and the grocery store in many parts of the world are a huge piece of the problem. Last week, MIT Technology Review hosted an event where my colleagues and I dug into a conversation about the future of batteries and the materials that go into them. We got so many great questions, and we answered quite a few of them (subscribers should check out the recording of the full event here). But there were still a lot of questions, particularly about EVs, that we didn’t get to, so let’s take a look at a few. (I’ve edited these for length and clarity, but they came from subscribers, so thank you to everyone who submitted!) Why is there not a bigger push for plug-in hybrids during …

Trident missile test failure raises questions about UK’s nuclear deterrent | Trident

A Trident nuclear missile failed, plopping into the Atlantic during a test launch attended by the British defence secretary last month, raising questions about the efficiency and effectiveness of Britain’s nuclear deterrent. The Ministry of Defence said that an “anomaly occurred” during the exercise involving the submarine HMS Vanguard on 30 January that was “event specific”, implying it would not have happened in the unlikely event of a war. No further details about the embarrassing failure were provided, although the MoD insisted that “there are no implications for the reliability of the wider Trident missile systems and stockpile”. Defence sources added that Grant Shapps was present at the time the test took place. Subsequently, Tobias Ellwood, the former chair of the defence select committee, said in an interview with GB News that the problems related to testing gear. “I understand it was some equipment that was actually attached to the missile itself that prevented the firing of the rocket system after the missile had left the submarine,” the MP said. Nuclear firing systems are complex …

Biden’s allies are stepping forward to vouch for him amid age questions

Biden’s allies are stepping forward to vouch for him amid age questions

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden’s approach to deflecting questions about his age has pivoted from “watch me” to vouch for me. In the days since special counsel Robert Hur released a report that described Biden’s memory as “significantly limited,” presidential appointees and friendly lawmakers have been stepping forward one by one to attest to his acuity. Biden asks “pertinent questions” and cares about “minute details,” they’ve told news outlets. He is “very engaging” and detail-oriented. The White House went so far as to put out a memo name-checking senior officials from both parties who’ve said they found Biden to be mentally sharp. For all the people vouching for Biden, some prominent Democrats aren’t persuaded that the approach will ease concerns about his cognitive abilities. They worry that a protective White House staff has bubble-wrapped Biden in ways that tend to distance him from people who appreciate his humanity, flaws and all. “You need to let Joe Biden be Joe Biden,” Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., said on “The Chuck ToddCast,” taped Tuesday. Biden has nine months …
