How JWST puts the squeeze on light dark matter, for free

Sign up for the Starts With a Bang newsletter Travel the universe with Dr. Ethan Siegel as he answers the biggest questions of all Notice: JavaScript is required for this content. All throughout the Universe, there’s a massive puzzle whose solution remains unknown: the dark matter mystery. Within every large, high-mass system that we examine, including: spiral galaxies, elliptical galaxies, groups of galaxies, clusters of galaxies, cosmic filaments, and the large-scale cosmic web, there simply isn’t enough normal matter to explain the gravitational signals we observe. From the internal motions of galaxies to the relative motions of galaxies within a cluster to the gravitational lensing signals generated by these objects to the clustering patterns of galaxies on the largest of cosmic scales, some novel type of mass that neither absorbs nor emits light — dark matter — must be present to consistently explain what we observe. And yet, all of our efforts to directly detect dark matter have come up empty, with key signals from particle colliders, cosmic ray experiments, and possible signatures of dark …

Gurr Johns Puts Focus on U.S. Naming Maarten Ten Holder as Region’s CEO

Gurr Johns, an art advisory and appraisal firm with offices in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, has appointed Maarten ten Holder to the newly-created role of Chief Executive Officer of its North American division as it places a bigger focus on clients in the US. Based in New York, ten Holder will oversee the company’s US advisory services, reporting to Gurr Johns’s co-founder and executive chairman, Harry Smith, who is based in London. He joins a full-time staff of around 25 people, excluding outside consultants. In a recent interview with ARTnews, Smith said that the US holds the most financial opportunity compared to other parts of the world. “We never want to underestimate the wealth of America. It is so much bigger than everywhere else, where they’re barely on the same planet, and they’re solid.” Related Articles Gurr Johns values around $12 billion worth of art and collectibles each year, according to Smith. Ten Holder’s appointment comes as the advisory group has been expanding its reach towards finance. The company oversees nine subsidiary …

Canoo reportedly puts staff on ‘mandatory unpaid break’ for weeks

Canoo is having a very unmerry Christmas. Remaining employees of the beleaguered U.S. electric vehicle startup have been placed on a “mandatory unpaid break” according to TechCrunch, with no view to return for a few weeks at minimum.  While it isn’t uncommon for businesses to close around the end of the year, Canoo’s decision to put staff on break from Monday is unlikely to be driven by holiday cheer. The company has been plagued by financial problems and furloughs, resorting to borrowing millions from CEO Tony Aquila‘s private equity firm AFV Management Advisors in order to stay afloat. SEE ALSO: Canoo unveils electric pickup truck that’s way smaller than the Tesla Cybertruck According to EV, staff were notified of the mandatory break via email last Friday, and told they would receive further updates to their personal email addresses in the first week of January. Employees’ access to Canoo’s system was apparently suspended by close of business the same day. “We apologize for the timing of this message,” Canoo’s email read, as sighted by EV. “Please …

Saudi Arabia Puts $52.6 M. Toward Centre Pompidou Overhaul

Saudi Arabia will contribute €50 million ($52.6 million) to the €262 million renovation of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The money is part of a heritage fund established as part of a years-long collaboration between Saudi Arabia and French culture officials. The Centre Pompidou, which is considered France‘s top modern and contemporary art museum, will be closed for the overhaul of its exhibition spaces between 2025 and 2030. During that time, exhibitions will be held off-site. The announcement of the funding promise was made last week by French Culture Minister Rachida Dati and Saudi Culture Minister Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud Related Articles The funding is part of a broader partnership detailed in a ten-agreement package. Dati and Al Saoud also announced nine other cultural deals related to projects in archeology, film, and photography. As part of the deal, France has pledged to back Saudi Arabia’s development of multiple museum and heritage projects, including a new photography museum in Riyadh linked to programs at the National School of Photography in Arles. Tryptophan Isn’t What Puts You Under on Thanksgiving. It’s the Carbs

Tryptophan Isn’t What Puts You Under on Thanksgiving. It’s the Carbs

Every year, I promise myself I’m not going to eat myself into a food coma: I’ll eat responsibly, front-load my belly with salad, and go light on the turkey and gravy. Instead, I wake up three hours after Thanksgiving dinner, sprawled out like Robinson Crusoe on the living room floor under a pile of my nephews’ toys. My shirt is covered in light brown stains, and greasy handprints smear my jeans. What is it about Thanksgiving that sends me—and millions of other Americans—into digestive oblivion? Are we all blissed out on turkey, or is there another reason Thanksgiving is the holiday for sloth? You’ve probably heard that turkey meat is dripping with a sleep-inducing chemical called tryptophan. And while it’s true the stuff plays a part in sending your brain into slumber, saying it does so single-handedly is like saying Neil Armstrong jumped to the moon all by himself. For one thing, turkey isn’t particularly laden with tryptophan. Ounce for ounce, a roast chicken, grilled steak, or rack of pork spareribs all have comparable amounts. …

Update: The Metropolitan Museum of Art has put online 492,000 high-resolution images of artistic works. Even better, the museum has placed the vast majority of these images into the public domain, meaning they can be downloaded directly from the museum’s website for non-commercial use. When you browse the Met collection and find an image that you fancy, just look at the lower left-hand side of the image. If you see an “OA” icon and the words “public domain” (as shown in the example below), you’re free to use the image, provided that you abide by the Met’s terms. In making this collection available online, the Met joined other world-class museums in putting large troves of digital art online. Mers outbreak in Saudi Arabia puts health experts on high alert

Mers outbreak in Saudi Arabia puts health experts on high alert

The first case, a man with underlying health conditions, went to hospital in early April after developing a cough, fever and body aches. He later died from the disease. But two other men in the same hospital, both aged 60, have also tested positive for the coronavirus – sparking a broad contact tracing effort from health officials, to detect further infections before it can spread further. Dozens of people have been tested. “Hospitals can either serve as a source of prevention or amplification of transmission,” said Dr Saskia Popescu, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “I’ve spent a lot of time studying Mers healthcare-transmission cases and using those lessons to strengthen healthcare bioprep and honestly, THIS is why we invest in infection prevention programs,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Mers is ‘still around and still a threat’ Mers was first detected in 2012, when it jumped from camels to humans in Saudi Arabia, and it has since spread to 27 other countries. Globally, 2,204 cases and 860 deaths …

Stormy Daniels payment puts focus on Trump and check-writing as trial testimony resumes

Stormy Daniels payment puts focus on Trump and check-writing as trial testimony resumes

Former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial will resume Friday in New York City with testimony from his former White House executive assistant — a far friendlier witness than Thursday’s star attraction, adult film actor Stormy Daniels. Madeleine Westerhout began her testimony in Manhattan criminal court Thursday afternoon, after Daniels spent the morning sparring with Trump attorney Susan Necheles during cross-examination about her claim that she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump lawyer Michael Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about the allegation during the 2016 presidential election. Trump later reimbursed Cohen in payments prosecutors charge were covered up with falsified business records. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied Daniels’ claim. Daniels got emotional at one point as Necheles asked her about various mean posts about her on social media accounts, including one from a person who’d referred to her as an “aging harlot.” Necheles began her cross-examination of Westerhout on Thursday, as well, but with a far gentler touch. Westerhout had testified about how thrilled she was to be working …

Amazon puts first electric semi trucks into ocean freight operation

Amazon puts first electric semi trucks into ocean freight operation

Southern California truck spotters will have plenty of electric semi trucks to watch out for as Amazon adds fifty Class 8 EVs to its commercial fleet. The fully electric Volvo semi trucks purchased will haul both heavy cargo containers and customer package loads in Amazon’s first- and middle-mile operations in California. The trucks will join the hundreds of last-mile electric vans from Ford and Rivian that are already delivering packages across the golden state. These are the first-ever electric trucks in the company’s ocean freight operations, also known as drayage operations. They’ve already started hitting the road at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, with a dozen expected to be in service by the end of the year. “We’re proud to launch our largest fleet of electric heavy-duty vehicles yet in California,” said Udit Madan, vice president of Worldwide Amazon Operations. “Heavy-duty trucking is a particularly difficult area to decarbonize, which makes us all the more excited to have these vehicles on the road today. We’ll use what we learn from deploying these vehicles …
