Celebrity Big Brother review: It’s time to put this bleak show out of its misery

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free Get our The Life Cinematic email for free When ITV resurrected Celebrity Big Brother in 2024, after this ailing format had languished in TV purgatory for more than half a decade, it seemed to promise a bright new era for a show that has always suffered from a bit of an image problem. Yes, it lacked the sequins and sob stories of Strictly. And it couldn’t lay claim to the high stakes and hardships of I’m a Celebrity. But there would be devious twists! A decent budget! And, as a consequence, proper celebrities! It’d have the camp factor of the previous seasons that aired on Channels 4 and 5, but with ITV’s financial heft behind it, to blow away the faint musty smell of desperation that had always clung to CBB. What they gave us, though, was pretty underwhelming. Last year’s season amounted to countless hours of X Factor gruesome …

Chinese Companies Rush to Put DeepSeek in Everything

Chinese Companies Rush to Put DeepSeek in Everything

A mobile shooting game developed by Tencent is using DeepSeek to power an in-game assistant that can, among other things, give players fortune-telling readers about whether they are going to have a great gaming session that day or not. CGN Power, a state-owned nuclear power company, vaguely stated that it has incorporated DeepSeek into its AI system for employees “to understand complex questions and to deal with them efficiently.” Local governments in China are embracing DeepSeek, too. For example, Shenzhen officials have put DeepSeek-powered applications on the cloud “for all government agencies across the city.” Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, is using DeepSeek to analyze real-time urban management data as part of a smart city program. Thousands of government officials and employees across the country are also attending lectures given by professors or experts at state-owned companies that explain what DeepSeek is and how its technology can be used. One reason DeepSeek has been so successful is that its open source model arrived at a time when Chinese companies were already looking for ways …

People can pay £150 to have one put outside their homes, but with a catch

People can pay £150 to have one put outside their homes, but with a catch

Residents in Bolton can pay £150 to have disabled parking bays outside their homes – but council bosses say they won’t be enforced. The policy, to allow people with disabilities to have road markings outside where they live, was recently adopted by the council. The parking bays are not subject any enforcement should someone other than the badge holder park there but it’s hoped that motorists will be considerate of the markings. The council said many streets in the borough are traditional terraced houses meaning the only parking available to residents is on street. Registered blue badge holders can apply for a residential disabled parking bay to be marked on the road outside their home. The bays are not reserved for any specific individual and will not be enforced by the council or the police. Waste.gov put behind password after sending WordPress demo website live

The U.S. government recently registered DEI.gov and Waste.gov as new federal websites, with Reuters reporting that neither page was responsive as of last Wednesday. Now Waste.gov has been hidden behind a password after apparently going live — with a default WordPress template. 404 Media reports that Waste.gov temporarily displayed an example web page provided by WordPress, using the design template Twenty Twenty-Four and featuring a fictional architectural firm called Études. While the page included the domain name and the tagline “tracking government waste,” the rest of Waste.gov focused on Études’ fake architectural services. DEI.gov redirected to Waste.gov. That isn’t even to mention shutting down the U.S. humanitarian aid agency and its website, the Office of Gun Violence …

U.S. Marine Corps: Put Me In Coach

U.S. Marine Corps: Put Me In Coach

Authored by Stephen Baird via RealClearDefense, In some ways the U.S. military is like an NFL team.  We have an owner, the American people, represented by the U.S. Congress.  We have General Managers, the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, the Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC), the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, and the Chief of Space Operations who man, train, and equip their Service for employment by a coach.  The military has several coaches, the geographic Combatant Commanders (U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Southern Command, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Central Command, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command).  The Combatant Commanders develop game plans (campaign, contingency, and crisis plans) to support the National Security Strategy in their respective geographical areas of responsibility. The Combatant Commanders have planning staffs.  They invite their Service Components (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, and National Guard) to planning meetings where each Service Component planner identifies their capabilities that can support the Combatant …

Where Do You Put the Camera? Every Frame a Painting Presents Insights from Famous Directors

Where Do You Put the Camera? Every Frame a Painting Presents Insights from Famous Directors

Whether or not we believe in auteurhood, we each have our own mental image of what a film director does. But if we’ve never actually seen one at work, we’re liable not to understand what the actual experience of directing feels like: making decision after decision after decision, during the shoot and at all other times besides. (Wes Anderson made light of that gauntlet in an American Express commercial years ago.) Not all of these decisions are easily made, and it can actually be the simplest-sounding ones that cause the worst headaches. Where, for example, do you put the camera? That’s the subject of the new video essay above from Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou’s YouTube channel Every Frame a Painting, which considers how the decision of camera placement has been approached by such famous directors like Steven Soderbergh, Greta Gerwig, Guillermo del Toro, and Martin Scorsese, as well as master cinematographer Roger Deakins. Technology may have multiplied the choices available for any given shot, but that certainly hasn’t made the task any easier. Some …

They say Babbel is more fun than TikTok, so I put it to the test

They say Babbel is more fun than TikTok, so I put it to the test

Like many, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to simply spend less time on my phone. And I think the recent talk about app bans has shown us that we’re all a little bit addicted. Personally, I’m going to try learning a new language. I’ve always wanted to, and I found an unbeatable deal on Babbel. I’ve seen ads for Babbel on TikTok and great reviews online, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to commit to paying monthly fees. But then I saw I could get a Babbel lifetime subscription for $149.99 through Popular Science with code BABBEL20 at checkout (reg. $599). If you’re interested, you only have through January 25 to get this discount. Trying Babbel for the first time Babbel offers lessons in 14 languages, so I decided to start with Spanish. There are many native speakers in my community, and you never know when knowing a few words or phrases could be useful. The app had me set a goal and daily notifications so I’d remember to come back for lessons. …

Pope Francis’ comments on the war in Gaza put a strain on Vatican-Jewish relations

Pope Francis’ comments on the war in Gaza put a strain on Vatican-Jewish relations

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — While many at the Vatican let out a sigh of relief following reports that Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on Friday (Jan. 17), the interruption of hostilities in Gaza might not be enough to repair Catholic-Jewish relations, damaged by Pope Francis’ criticism of Israel. “There is a crisis in Catholic-Jewish relations because of a series of papal comments,” said Rabbi Noam Marans, director of the interreligious affairs department at the American Jewish Committee (AJC), in an interview with RNS. While Francis’ gestures and remarks may have hindered the carefully restored relationship between Catholics and Jews, some Jewish representatives said that it’s not enough to undo decades of joint efforts to promote dialogue and understanding between the two great monotheistic faiths. Conflict between the state of Israel and Pope Francis started soon after the attack by Hamas terrorists on Israeli citizens on Oct. 7, 2023. About a month after the event, Francis told faithful gathered at St. Peter’s Square that in Gaza “we have gone beyond wars. This is not …

AI Hardware Is in Its ‘Put Up or Shut Up’ Era

AI Hardware Is in Its ‘Put Up or Shut Up’ Era

Whether any of them will implement chatbots and agents well or in new and exciting ways is much harder to say. While the addition of AI may have been enough to garner the investment needed to build a device, it may not be enough to get people to actually buy the thing. Chatbots and AI agents don’t yet provide enough of a use case to justify people pinning them to their shirts en masse. We’re also at a point of AI saturation where the tech is in everything. So then, what makes your AI earbuds special? “That’s the problem a lot of these startups have; if AI is their differentiator, then what happens when everybody has it?” Sag says. “It’s now table stakes.” Wearables and devices built specifically to provide some AI-powered services may have seemed like the logical next step in the AI evolution, but so far the utility we’re getting from them doesn’t push any boundaries. “The reality is we don’t need dedicated hardware for the kind of features or use cases that …

Put Some Punctuation in Your Praise! – OpentheWord.org

Credit: William White/unsplash.com By J. Lee Grady Facing a difficult situation? You need to release the shout of the Lord.According to the rules of proper grammar, exclamation marks should be used rarely, and only when conveying extreme emotion. I’m sure you agree there is nothing more annoying than an article or e-mail FILLED WITH ALL CAPS AND PROFUSE EXCLAMATIONS!!! An overuse of such punctuation is the journalistic equivalent of screaming in a public library. Yet exclamation marks do appear in the Bible, especially in the Psalms. Apparently there are times in our spiritual lives when extreme emotion and pumped-up volume are necessary.
”Shouting is an act of faith that can break the power of fear, doubt, heaviness and grief. When the devil has turned up the volume of his clamorous attacks, we must retaliate by lifting our voices in raucous praise.”” The Message version of the Bible is particularly known for its liberal use of exclamation marks. It paraphrases Psalm 47:1 this way: “Shout God-songs at the top of your lungs!” Psalm 95:1 is rendered like …
