LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Kara Young Star in ‘Purpose’ on Broadway

LaTanya Richardson Jackson will return to Broadway in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s new play Purpose. Jackson, who has previously appeared on Broadway in the 2018 production of To Kill A Mockingbird and the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun, will star alongside Kara Young, who won a Tony Award last season for her role in Purlie Victorious, Harry Lennix (The Blacklist), Jon Michael Hill (Pass Over), Glenn Davis (King James) and Alana Arenas (The Bluest Eye). Phylicia Rashad directs the new play from Jacobs-Jenkins, who wrote last season’s Tony Award-winning revival Appropriate.  The play follows the Jasper family, which has created a powerful dynasty in Black American politics. However, when the family’s youngest son, Nazareth, comes home with an uninvited friend, the family must contend with faith, their own legacy and the cracks beneath the surface.  Purpose is scheduled to play a limited 19-week run at the Helen Hayes Theater, with previews starting Feb. 25 and an opening night scheduled for March 17.  Arenas, Davis, Hill and Lennix all appeared in the world premiere of …

Government must reconnect teachers with a sense of purpose

Government must reconnect teachers with a sense of purpose

More from this theme Recent articles Beyond the themes we’ve seen consistently since 2017, this year’s Teacher Wellbeing Index contains an important nuance that ought to inform policy decisions and school and college practice across the UK. In particular, these findings can usefully inform how we think about improving workforce retention. This year’s survey explored how well education staff feel they are supported by wider public services. We don’t claim a causal link, but there is a clear relationship between educators’ perception of the support they receive from other agencies (CAHMS, children’s services, etc.) and their job satisfaction and overall wellbeing.  Through our direct work with school and college staff, we hear that they feel isolated and routinely left holding emotionally demanding, difficult situations relating to children’s mental health, physical safety and material poverty. Teachers’ professional training offers little or no preparation for this increasingly significant part of the job. We see very little on-the-job support for staff who are usually left to deal with these demands by themselves. This sense of professional isolation is …

Climate Summits “No Longer Fit For Purpose”, Experts Say

Climate Summits “No Longer Fit For Purpose”, Experts Say

It looks like experts are starting to realize that the litany of global ‘climate summits’, where participants fly in on private jets to wax poetic about the virtues of attempting to change thousand-year cooling and warming cycles on Earth, could need some reform. Leading climate experts, including Ban Ki-moon, Mary Robinson, Christiana Figueres, and Johan Rockström, are calling for significant changes to UN climate summits, according to a new report from The Guardian. They argue future conferences should only be hosted by nations demonstrating strong climate action and advocate for stricter controls on fossil fuel lobbyists. Over 1,700 industry lobbyists attended Cop29, raising concerns about undue influence.   The group has urged the UN to streamline the annual summits, amplify the voices of developing countries, and increase meeting frequency to better address the climate crisis. “It is now clear that the Cop is no longer fit for purpose. We need a shift from negotiation to implementation,” they wrote.  “We need strict eligibility criteria to exclude countries who do not support the phase-out/transition away from fossil …

Would our lives be more meaningful if the universe had a purpose

Would our lives be more meaningful if the universe had a purpose

History was once commonly understood to be a tale of progress. The idea received its best known, if not most easily understood, expression in the work of W.F. Hegel, who saw in the course of world events a universal “spirit” striving towards self-realization. Today, philosophers are more inclined to see history as Darwinian, the product of blind forces acting on random mutations. Our field thus tends to have little truck not only with progress narratives of history but with grand historical narratives of any sort, insofar as these invariably attempt to impose some shape or order on the historical process. Recently, however, it seems the Hegelian view has been making something of a comeback. Thomas Nagel, in his 2012 book Mind and Cosmos, and now Philip Goff, in his new book Why? The Purpose of the Universe (Oxford 2023), both argue that the standard Darwinian account is inadequate to explain the existence of conscious, rational life forms such as ours. The alternative both leans towards and involves supplementing the laws of physics and biology already discovered by science …

FOLLOW OUR PODCAST ON (search opentheword): PODCAST NOTES: Hi, my name is Dean Smith and in this podcast, I want to talk about one of the more controversial Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the gift of Tongues. A friend, Jim Marteniuk, told me about his intriguing encounter with tongues a few years back. But before I tell that story, let’s define the gift of tongues. It is a gift that allows people to speak in a language they do not know through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can also provide a gift of interpretation through which these tongues can be interpreted. Tongues can come in basically two forms. It can appear as an actual human language which is what happened on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit fell upon 120 disciples of Jesus. That group poured into the streets of …

For Muslim student protesters, a sense of purpose mingled with fear

For Muslim student protesters, a sense of purpose mingled with fear

NEW YORK (RNS) — Fahad Kiani knows he is making history by participating in the pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses around the city. Over the past few weeks, Kiani, a graduate of the City University of New York, has demonstrated at his alma mater and at Columbia University. But while the heightened police presence and the 24-hour tent encampments dominate news headlines, Kiani found hope when a fellow protester decided to become Muslim just outside Columbia’s gates one night last week. After reaffirming the young man’s decision, Kiani, 34, found two Muslim witnesses among the protesting crowd and, with bystanders looking on, they together recited the shahada prayer to accept Islam. “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah,” the young man, with a kaffiyeh wrapped around his head, repeated back. Afterward, the two shook hands and embraced.  “It was the best experience of my night,” Kiani, a Pakistani American, said. “That really kind of turned it around from all of the wild hatred I’m seeing around me.” As some campuses around the country enter a …

Are We Destroying The Economy On Purpose?

Are We Destroying The Economy On Purpose?

Submitted by QTR’s Fringe Finance In one of the most fascinating discussions I’ve had in a while, I spoke last weekend with my friend Andy Schectman about the state of the world, markets, geopolitics and the economy. What started as a friendly catch-up quickly turned into delving into angles on the state of our nation that I had never before considered — specifically, Andy laying out one theory that started in the 1960’s that could explain the chaos that it appears our economy — and nation — is devolving into. First, we talked about the bond market, excessive fiscal spending and why gold continues to be the answer. Andy told me: “I think it’s a lot deeper than that, too. I think that we have proven to the rest of the world, largely through weaponizing of the dollar, that if you don’t align ideologically with us, well, that’s even a bigger problem. So, yeah, when you look at what gold has done over the past 25 years, it’s outpaced the bond market, but it doesn’t …

What You Must Find If You Want A Life That Lights You Up Inside | Deborah Cox

What is your “life purpose” and how do you find it? It sounds so important, but does anyone know what it means? Does “personal purpose” make you think of a divine mission statement handed down from the clouds? Or, the stuff that makes people run marathons and discover the cure for AIDS? Or, does the topic make you feel a little queasy as you think, “I have no idea why I exist … or what my purpose might be.” If you feel lost, you’re not alone. I promise, that finding your purpose isn’t as mysterious as you might think, and you gain some pretty amazing benefits from having one. So, use these questions to get started in your search: What do I want most in the world? What are my gifts and true passions?  What sort of work am I supposed to do? What behaviors do I most need to change in myself?  How do I want to contribute? To make the world better?  Sure, the questions sound easy to answer, but refining your answers and …
