Taliban carry out a double public execution at a stadium in Afghanistan

GHAZNI, Afghanistan — The Taliban carried out a double public execution at a stadium in southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday as thousands watched the killing of two convicted men by their victims’ relatives. The Taliban’s Supreme Court had ruled that the pair were responsible for the stabbing deaths of two victims in separate attacks, according to a court statement. It identified the two as Syed Jamal from central Wardak province and Gul Khan from Ghazni — though it was unclear who did the stabbing, the two convicted men or others. On Thursday, people crowded outside the stadium in the Ali Lala area of the city of Ghazni, clambering to get in, and religious scholars pleaded with relatives of the victims to forgive the convicts, but they refused. Abu Abu Khalid Sarhadi, a spokesman for Ghazni police, said that …

Reddit Files to Go Public, in First Social Media I.P.O. in Years

Reddit, the community-focused message board site, filed to go public on Thursday, paving the way for it to be the first major social media company to debut on the stock market in years and a test for private companies after a drought in initial public offerings. In an offering prospectus, Reddit disclosed its financial performance in preparation for selling shares to investors. The San Francisco-based company reported that its revenue rose more than 20 percent as its losses narrowed last year. It added that it had 73 million daily users and more than 100,000 active communities. The prospectus kicks off a process to the stock market, with the 18-year-old company set to meet potential investors to whet their appetites for buying its shares. Reddit could go public on the New York Stock Exchange in a matter of weeks under the stock symbol RDDT. The company was valued at more than $10 billion in a 2021 private financing. Reddit is the last of an earlier generation of social media companies to aim for the stock market, …

The ‘devastating’ Windsor Castle fire that led to Buckingham Palace opening to the public

The ‘devastating’ Windsor Castle fire that led to Buckingham Palace opening to the public

1992 was a year for the late Queen to forget, with the then monarch dubbing it as her ‘annus horribilus’. Events included the breakdown of her children Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne’s marriages and the release of a book by Princess Diana which detailed her marital issues. The year culminated in a horrific fire at Windsor Castle, one of the Queen’s residences, which caused extensive damage to the historical property, although thankfully it did not claim any lives. The ensuing repair job cost millions, with the late monarch having to pay tax on her income and to open the doors to Buckingham Palace to finance the operation. WATCH: Take a tour of Windsor Castle as it stands today But what exactly on that fateful day? Read on to find out all you need to know about the fire… What caused the fire? The fire started at 11:15am on 20 November 1992 when a faulty light spotlight inside Queen Victoria’s Private Chapel ignited a nearby curtain. A report released by Buckingham Palace noted that …

Reddit files to go public — at last

Reddit files to go public — at last

Social media giant Reddit filed to go public today, dropping a long-awaited S-1 filing that will see it approach the public markets potentially at the head of a long-column of richly valued technology startups and private companies that need to find an exit this year. The timing of Reddit’s IPO is not a surprise. The company’s long history included it being sold in its infancy, only to be later spun back out. Today Reddit approaches the public markets with more than $800 million worth of revenue in 2023, up from $666.7 million in 2022. However, the company remains unprofitable on both a GAAP and adjusted basis, and continues to consume cash to fund its operations. Scale has not yet solved the profitability question for Reddit, which could limit its potential valuation when it does list its shares. In 2022 Reddit generated a net loss of $158.6 million, and adjusted EBITDA of negative $108.43 million. In 2023 those figures improved to a $90.8 million net loss, and $69.3 million worth of negative adjusted EBITDA. The company’s …

Toxic sewage from Tijuana is causing a “public health crisis” on the border: report

Toxic sewage from Tijuana is causing a “public health crisis” on the border: report

A recent report by San Diego State University (SDSU) details a growing issue at the US-Mexico border: Untreated sewage and other unhygienic pollution is flowing from Mexico into the United States. Describing this development as a “public health crisis,” SDSU’s School of Public Health describes how “untreated sewage, industrial waste and urban run-off” have severely contaminated the Tijuana River and Estuary (TJRE). Unfortunately for Americans, the TRJE flows directly into the Pacific Ocean, where it washes the shores of the small California city of Imperial Beach. Beyond that, the Tijuana River flows for 120 miles from Mexico into the United States, putting at risk all of the populations along its edges. The International Boundary and Water Commission estimates that 100 billion gallons of pollutants have been dumped into this waterway over the last five years. The scientists who worked on the SDSU report discovered a wide range of dangerous bacteria and viruses in the water. These included HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, Streptococcus, Listeria, Vibrio, Salmonella and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as well as various pathogens (such as E. …

Analysis: Ringgit’s record-breaking decline could trigger public unhappiness, spell political trouble for Malaysia PM Anwar

Analysis: Ringgit’s record-breaking decline could trigger public unhappiness, spell political trouble for Malaysia PM Anwar

Dr Chin warned that a worsening quality of life due to rising prices caused by the falling ringgit would be a “very dangerous thing” for Mr Anwar.  “Malaysia is a trading nation so everything that it imports will automatically be much more expensive,” said Dr Chin, noting that the country could see a more than five per cent increase across the board for everything it imports.  “The cost of living in Malaysia is very high (and) wages are stagnant. (For) the working class and the lower class, (rising costs) will really impact their standard of living. And of course that will translate into political unhappiness.”  He warned that inaction by the government would place Mr Anwar in a precarious position politically.  “If Anwar doesn’t get the economy right, then he is just setting himself up for a fall because there would be a major push to replace him,” said Dr Chin.  Echoing this, Dr Oh Ei Sun – a senior fellow with the Singapore Institute of International Affairs – said that if the issue is …

At the time Smith, 42, was dealing with personal difficulties and mental health issues following her father’s cancer diagnosis. Media coverage was dominated by reports of missed curtain calls, disgruntled audiences and speculation about Smith’s alcohol abuse. She eventually took a leave of absence from the show due to “stress and exhaustion”. In a new interview, Smith said she recalled having “the curtain brought down on me”. The Olivier-winner will now star in the new West End adaptation of the film 1977 Opening Night, which follows Broadway actor Myrtle (played by Smith) as she has a downward spiral a few days before the premiere of her latest play. Smith said that receiving the script for Opening Night was a “sign”, since there are similarities …

The wall of public debt that Americans do not want to see

The wall of public debt that Americans do not want to see

At Fed headquarters in Washington, February 2018. ANDREW HARNIK / AP When Wall Street goes, everything goes. In the fall of 2023, Americans were gripped by panic: Interest rates were soaring above 5% for the first time since 2007, while the public deficit was out of control, amounting to $1.695 billion (€1.573 billion), or 6.3% of gross domestic product (GDP), for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2023. Olivier Blanchard, a French neo-Keynesian economist and former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), even issued a warning about a potential “explosion” in debt levels. Subsequently, interest rates gradually decreased as inflation dropped, settling at around 4.1%. Concurrently, the stock market soared: The S&P 500 index, a benchmark for large companies, has surged 20% since the October 2023 low. Since then, the cost of borrowing has fallen again and tax revenues are on the rise again thanks to stock market capital gains. As a result, the deficit is set to fall back to $1.6 trillion for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024, according to …

‘It’s so close to the bone’: Sheridan Smith on her very public meltdown – and reliving it on stage | Stage

‘It’s so close to the bone’: Sheridan Smith on her very public meltdown – and reliving it on stage | Stage

It is late morning and a major star is kicking off. “Turn the lights on, for fuck’s sake!” she rages at a stagehand. Her fists are clenched, her tanned, tattooed arms are sticking out of a royal blue sleeveless dress, and her locks have been dyed a burnt brunette. Once her demand has been met, the star pivots to face the wide, high-ceilinged room and switches to a gentler register. “Humilia-ting!” she trills, making the last syllable ring like a bell. As laughter fills the air, she slips out of character, her body visibly relaxing. This woman is no longer Myrtle Gordon, the sozzled Broadway legend cracking up on the eve of her latest show, but Sheridan Smith, the double Olivier-winning star of the Legally Blonde musical, whose own recent troubles have left her feeling she has something to prove. The new musical – called Opening Night and adapted by Ivo van Hove and Rufus Wainwright from John Cassavetes’ blistering 1977 film – could be just the ticket. “It’s so close to the bone,” says …

Biden Running For Re-Election Is “One Of The Greatest Gags Ever Put Over On The American Public”

Biden Running For Re-Election Is “One Of The Greatest Gags Ever Put Over On The American Public”

Authored by James Howard Kunstler via Kunstler.com, “We are going to have the most diverse and inclusive civilizational collapse in history” – Oilfield Rando on “X” Hark! We were informed on Presidents’ Day by The New York Times that a poll out of the University of Houston, led by one prof of poly-sci named (get this name) Brandon Rottinghaus, ranks “Joe Biden” at No. 14, way above average among the forty-six demi-gods elected to run the US government since 1789. It’s a helluva good bit of news for a nation in need of reassurance in these dark days, don’t you agree? They’ve got him sandwiched between John Quincy Adams and Woodrow Wilson, beating out the likes of Andrew Jackson, Grover Cleveland, James Monroe, and Ronald Reagan. Mr. Trump is ranked dead last, of course. “Biden’s most important achievements may be that he rescued the presidency from Trump, resumed a more traditional style of presidential leadership and is gearing up to keep the office out of his predecessor’s hands this fall,” the report states. Gearing up? I’m sure. If gearing …
