OpenAI Researchers Find That Even the Best AI Is “Unable To Solve the Majority” of Coding Problems

OpenAI Researchers Find That Even the Best AI Is “Unable To Solve the Majority” of Coding Problems

OpenAI researchers have admitted that even the most advanced AI models still are no match for human coders — even though CEO Sam Altman insists they will be able to beat “low-level” software engineers by the end of this year. In a new paper, the company’s researchers found that even frontier models, or the most advanced and boundary-pushing AI systems, “are still unable to solve the majority” of coding tasks. The researchers used a newly-developed benchmark called SWE-Lancer, built on more than 1,400 software engineering tasks from the freelancer site Upwork. Using the benchmark, OpenAI put three large language models (LLMs) — its own o1 reasoning model and flagship GPT-4o, as well as Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet — to the test. Specifically, the new benchmark evaluated how well the LLMs performed with two types of tasks from Upwork: individual tasks, which involved resolving bugs and implementing fixes to them, or management tasks that saw the models trying to zoom out and make higher-level decisions. (The models weren’t allowed to access the internet, meaning they couldn’t just crib …

Could blaming others be a link between attention problems and social media addiction?

Could blaming others be a link between attention problems and social media addiction?

Young adults who struggle with attention difficulties may be more prone to becoming addicted to social media, and a new study suggests a possible reason why. In a study recently published in Acta Psychologica, researchers found that the tendency to blame others for negative situations might explain some of the connection between attention deficit symptoms and social media addiction. This suggests that how people manage their emotions could play a role in the development of addictive social media habits in those with attention challenges. Social media has become an integral part of modern life, offering connection, entertainment, and information. However, for some individuals, social media use can become excessive and problematic, developing into what is known as social media addiction. Researchers are working to understand why some people are more susceptible to this addiction than others. One area of interest is the relationship between social media addiction and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, a condition characterized by difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Previous studies have indicated a link between ADHD symptoms and increased …

AI that mimics human problem solving is a big advance – but comes with new risks and problems

AI that mimics human problem solving is a big advance – but comes with new risks and problems

OpenAI recently unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) models, o1-preview and o1-mini (also referred to as “Strawberry”), claiming a significant leap in the reasoning capabilities of large language models (the technology behind Strawberry and OpenAI’s ChatGPT). While the release of Strawberry generated excitement, it also raised critical questions about its novelty, efficacy and potential risks. Central to this is the model’s ability to employ “chain-of-thought reasoning” – a method similar to a human using a scratchpad, or notepad, to write down intermediate steps when solving a problem. Chain-of-thought reasoning mirrors human problem solving by breaking down complex tasks into simpler, manageable sub-tasks. The use of scratchpad-like reasoning in large language models is not a new idea. The ability to perform chain-of-thought reasoning by AI systems not specifically trained to do so was first observed in 2022 by several research groups. These included Jason Wei and colleagues from Google Research and Takeshi Kojima and colleagues from the University of Tokyo and Google. Before these works, other researchers such as Oana Camburu from the University of Oxford …

Russia launches Department of European Problems to deal with EU – POLITICO

Russia launches Department of European Problems to deal with EU – POLITICO

Russia has a new governmental department to deal with the EU and NATO: The Department of European Problems. The unit already existed within Russia’s foreign ministry, but was previously known as the Department of Pan-European Cooperation (DOC) before it was last week renamed the much spicier Department of European Problems (DEP), according to Russian media. Maria Zakharova, Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson, told local media the name change reflected “changes in geopolitical realities,” including the “obvious degradation of multilateral cooperation structures in Europe.” Russia’s relations with Europe have been in a deep freeze since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. The EU imposed sweeping sanctions on the Kremlin, confiscating Russian assets and pledging support for Ukraine. Moscow announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe in March 2022, and in July this year suspended its participation in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly. Teacher Says She’s Sick Of Our Education System Being Used As A Band-Aid For Society’s Problems

Teacher Says She’s Sick Of Our Education System Being Used As A Band-Aid For Society’s Problems

We’re all aware that the public school education system in this country is deeply flawed. Too much unnecessary pressure and burden is placed on teachers to carry the world’s issues on their backs, especially when it comes to the kids in their classrooms. It’s especially unfair when you realize how little teachers are paid and how little they’re respected as well. In 2020, an Iowa elementary school teacher named Alison Hoeman penned a beautiful explanation about how society tends to dump all of its problems and issues onto teachers as if they can just be the quick fix when, in reality, we should be demanding more from lawmakers and politicians.  Teachers are, frankly, quite tired of having to be the saving grace, as Hoeman put it. The teacher explained how the education system is being used as a band-aid for society’s problems. “Society: In one of the richest countries in the world, between 11 and 13 million children live in food-insecure homes. Schools: We can help … Kids can eat breakfast and lunch at school, and …

Apple’s iPadOS 18 is causing big problems for some iPad owners

Apple’s iPadOS 18 is causing big problems for some iPad owners

The iPadOS 18 rollout isn’t going exactly as planned. Apple has reportedly pulled iPadOS 18 for M4 iPad Pro devices, per MacRumors, over an update that is causing issues for some iPads. According to reports on Reddit and Apple’s official Community portal, iPadOS 18 is “bricking” select M4 iPad Pro devices (bricking is slang for rendering the device completely useless as it cannot be turned on anymore). SEE ALSO: New iPad mini might be coming soon “At some point during the update my iPad turned off, and would no longer turn on. I walked away during the update so I’m not sure when it broke. I tried all of the reset options but nothing worked. I just took it to the Apple Store who confirmed it’s completely bricked, but they said they had to send it out to their engineers before they can give me a replacement even though I have Apple care,” wrote one Redditor. Mashable Light Speed “I updated my iPad Pro M4 to iOS 18. It did not go well, the iPad …

New infidelity research shows being cheated on is linked to lasting health problems

New infidelity research shows being cheated on is linked to lasting health problems

A new study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships has found that the negative effects of being cheated on by a romantic partner can extend beyond emotional pain to potentially harm your long-term health. Researchers found that individuals who have experienced partner infidelity are more likely to report worse chronic health, and this effect persists even when they are in other supportive relationships. Infidelity, or the act of being cheated on by a partner, is a common and devastating form of romantic betrayal. A meta-analysis showed that about 34% of men and 24% of women have committed infidelity at some point in their lives. Given its prevalence, many researchers have explored its psychological effects, including increased anxiety, depression, and lowered self-esteem. However, the potential long-term health consequences of partner infidelity have received less attention. The researchers behind this new study wanted to address the gaps in existing literature by focusing on chronic health outcomes. Chronic health refers to long-lasting conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, and migraines, which can be influenced by …

I was sick of talking about my problems – so I paid to smash up a ‘rage room’ instead

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Shards of china are ricocheting off the walls. People are screaming. Teacups are flying. I’m energised. Sweat-drenched. Clear-headed. And alarmingly excited to smash apart the terracotta cat lingering in my peripheral vision. Rage rooms are a relatively new phenomenon. Essentially, the idea is to unleash your anger by paying to stand in a windowless room and smash things to smithereens with a variety of weapons while wearing protective eyewear. There’s roughly one in every major US city and a smaller smattering in the UK, mostly on the outskirts of London. Their popularity is also growing, due in part to swathes of women on TikTok who claim they’d rather take a hammer to some dinnerware than speak to a man about their feelings ever again. …
