King Willem-Alexander was joined by his family on Saturday as they gathered to mark his birthday celebrations on Koningsdag. Although Koningsdag is traditionally held on the King’s birthday, which is 27 April, it is celebrated on a Saturday if the date is a Sunday. As a result of the celebrations, Willem-Alexander and the rest of the Dutch royal family missed the funeral of Pope Francis, which was held on the same day. © Getty ImagesThe Dutch royals missed out on the service However, in a mark of respect, the celebrations were postponed for an hour to allow television broadcasts of the funeral. Willem-Alexander was joined by members of his immediate and wider family at the event, including Queen Maxima, Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess Alexia, Princess Laurentien, Prince Floris and Princess Aimee. Since quitting life as a senior royal in 2020, Prince Harry has been careful to keep as much of his children’s life away from the limelight as possible. This weekend Prince William went on a trip to Monaco to see his favorite soccer team, Birmingham’s Aston Villa, take on AS Monaco in a high-pressure match. On Tuesday, the prince attended a UEFA Champions League game at Stade Louis II alongside his two friends, Thomas van Straubenzee and Nicholas van Cutsem. Though Aston Villa’s season so far has been a dream come true for William—a supporter of the team since his teen years—he looked dejected when the game ended with a win for Monaco, 1–0. Van Straubanzee and van Cutsem are longtime friends of William’s and were both guests at his 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton.
