British pop-soul sensation Skye Newman: ‘I come from a vulnerable background and there are vultures in this world’

British pop-soul sensation Skye Newman: ‘I come from a vulnerable background and there are vultures in this world’

Although she is on course for pop stardom, with two nominations at next week’s Brit awards, 22-year-old Skye Newman lives in a cabin at the bottom of her sister’s garden in London. It’s the backdrop for the music video to her song Hairdresser, which has 7.5m views on YouTube. In the clip, she is made up, her hair in rollers, lounging with a gaggle of friends. Licking her fingertips to roll a joint, she laments a one-sided friendship with another woman: “When I’m needed, know I’ll be there first / You don’t reciprocate and, girl, that hurts.” It’s typical of Newman’s songcraft: ballad-driven contemporary soul that goes beyond romantic heartbreak to cover all kinds of pain and recrimination. The cabin gives Newman independence, but also proximity to family in the main house – which is where she is sitting today, barefaced, barefoot and drowning in an oversized black tracksuit. Her sister, who is also Newman’s manager, pops my tea on to the table and hovers nearby. The sisters each have their blond hair slicked back …

Vice President Vance thinks U.S. Olympic athletes should focus on competing for medals and keep their political opinions to themselves. “You’re not there to pop off about politics,” Vance told reporters this week when asked about American athletes who have expressed mixed feelings representing the U.S. during the Winter Games in Milan, given some of President… Source link

The next big star in British pop? Absolutely

The next big star in British pop? Absolutely

There was a brilliant moment on one of the last Graham Norton Show episodes of 2025. “Your mother named you ‘Absolutely’?” a concerned-sounding Matthew McConaughey asked the fast-rising alt-pop singer, who was sitting alongside Dwayne Johnson and her big sisters RAYE and Amma. Chaos descended as she clarified that Absolutely was a stage name, prompting McConaughey to enquire as to its origins. “Tequila,” Johnson joked. Primetime television spots are still a relatively new phenomenon for the artist born Abby-Lynn Keen. Today, I find her sitting in a quiet room backstage at her label offices; she jumps up to greet me with a hug as I walk in, her hair a mass of scarlet locks piled high on top of her head. A pair of knee-high suede boots are placed at one end of the sofa, a groaning rack of wardrobe options on the other. I interviewed Keen’s big sister Rachel, the pop star we know and love as RAYE, back when she was around 19, two years younger than Keen is now. It’s striking to …

The Generative AI Bubble Has Begun to Pop

The Generative AI Bubble Has Begun to Pop

Generative AI has dominated the tech news over the last two years. More than 50% of venture capital funding goes to generative AI, which I distinguish from predictive AI, the older and, at one time, the more researched form of AI. Announcements and news from the big consulting firms and top business schools are also dominated by generative AI. The profit figures suggest that they are the most profitable organizations within AI outside of Nvidia. Nirvana, doomsday or — bubble Bubbles 1 Adobe Stock licensed Much of the AI discourse in the media was previously split between nirvana, doomsday and bubble. Recently, talk of a bubble has increased as it has become clear that OpenAI, and likely other AI software companies, may never become profitable. The startup losses are bigger than we have ever seen and the fact that the startups are not required to release audited earnings like public companies do, means that the losses are likely much bigger than the announcements.  Analyses of Microsoft’s third quarter earnings in 2025 confirm this. Nevertheless, some …

Bulimia is a serious mental illness that affects around 230,000 people in the UK.
