My 7 favorite Android widgets to make your phone or tablet more useful

My 7 favorite Android widgets to make your phone or tablet more useful

Kerry Wan/ZDNET I’m going to preface this piece by saying the choice of widgets is personal, and what might be useful to me might not be useful to you. Even so, there’s a widget for everyone, and depending on the apps you have installed on your Android device, you’ll more than likely find one or two in this article that help make your day a bit more efficient. Also: This might be the end of ChromeOS, but what’s next could be better So, what are widgets? Simply put, they are additions to your Android home screen that allow quick access to information from apps, the apps themselves, or services you depend on. With the right collection of widgets, you could create an at-a-glance home screen that keeps you up to date without opening a single app. I’ve searched through the widgets for phones and tablets, and I’m sharing those that I think will make your devices more useful. Before we get to the list, let’s explore how to get started with widgets. 1. Google Calendar Show the …

A New Phone Scanner That Detects Spyware Has Already Found 7 Pegasus Infections

A New Phone Scanner That Detects Spyware Has Already Found 7 Pegasus Infections

In recent years, commercial spyware has been deployed by more actors against a wider range of victims, but the prevailing narrative has still been that the malware is used in targeted attacks against an extremely small number of people. At the same time, though, it has been difficult to check devices for infection, leading individuals to navigate an ad hoc array of academic institutions and NGOs that have been on the front lines of developing forensic techniques to detect mobile spyware. On Tuesday, the mobile device security firm iVerify is publishing findings from a spyware detection feature it launched in May. Of 2,500 device scans that the company’s customers elected to submit for inspection, seven revealed infections by the notorious NSO Group malware known as Pegasus. The company’s Mobile Threat Hunting feature uses a combination of malware signature-based detection, heuristics, and machine learning to look for anomalies in iOS and Android device activity or telltale signs of spyware infection. For paying iVerify customers, the tool regularly checks devices for potential compromise. But the company also …

Woman defended after refusing to pay for mother-in-law’s phone after toddler broke it

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more A mother has asked for opinions on whether or not she should have to pay for her mother-in-law’s phone after it was broken by her child. In a recent Reddit post shared to the popular “Am I The A**hole?” subreddit, the mother explains that her mother-in-law was babysitting her toddler when she decided to give the child her phone to watch YouTube videos. “Our LO decided she was done and threw the phone from her high chair, cracking the screen badly. Now, we absolutely do not do this. Our LO gets maybe two hours of screen time a week, and it’s always on the TV, never a phone,” the Reddit post read. The mother then clarified that her mother-in-law has more money than she …

HMD Fusion Review: A Cheap Modular Android Phone

HMD Fusion Review: A Cheap Modular Android Phone

I have probably tested close to 100 cheap phones over the last 9 years, and I’ve never really had to worry about bringing a backup in case things go awry. Budget phones are usually sluggish but work well enough. But I almost immediately regretted not bringing a spare smartphone when I took the HMD Fusion on a short trip to another state. The first sample of this Android phone kept freezing and restarting itself on the way to the airport. Then, further fueling my panic, it would boot up the home screen but my passcode wouldn’t work. “Passcode is incorrect.” What? Thankfully, a forced restart would set it back to normal. However, for the entirety of the weekend of my friend’s wedding in Kentucky, the Fusion would restart itself constantly. It also refused to launch Slack—though that may have been a blessing as work was off my mind that whole time. HMD said it could not replicate my issues, so the company sent me another unit. It’s been perfectly fine. It’s hard to suddenly shift …

Donald Trump Put Elon Musk on the Phone With Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Donald Trump Put Elon Musk on the Phone With Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Apparently you can buy anything, if you’re rich enough. Dialing In During his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just one day after the election, president-elect Donald Trump decided to include his number one campaigner: Elon Musk. First reported by Axios, this three-way call was apparently less tense than one might expect. According to insiders Axios spoke to, Zelenskyy was reassured by what he heard from the billionaire pair amid speculation about how a second Trump presidency will affect the United States’ relations with Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion. One of those sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity so they could discuss the matter freely, said that it “didn’t leave Zelenskyy with a feeling of despair.” In particular, the Ukrainian president was heartened that the call happened so soon after the election, one of Axios‘ anonymous sources claims. Notably, the Zelenskyy call occurred days before Trump spoke to Putin — and during that exchange, which seems to have happened without Musk, he advised his Russian counterpart not to escalate his years-long incursion in Ukraine. From Russia …

Why You Should Purchase a Premium Warranty With Your Phone

Why You Should Purchase a Premium Warranty With Your Phone

The upfront—or recurring—cost of a premium warranty plan for smartphones can feel excessive. However, if you look at the larger picture, they make a lot of sense. Here are the top reasons why I recommend purchasing a premium warranty plan. 1 Your Device Will Be Covered for More Than a Year Most smartphone manufacturers cover hardware defects in phones for 12 months under a limited warranty plan. However, problems that arise beyond this period almost always require a paid service. And with how fragile electronic devices can be, in my opinion, this one-year guarantee just isn’t enough. Purchasing a premium warranty plan—which often provides extended coverage—means you’re guaranteed to be covered against problems like a malfunctioning motherboard, green lines on your smartphone’s display, or a significantly degraded battery at no cost or a minor service charge. 2 Guaranteed Cost-Effective Repairs Against Accidental or Water Damage Austris Antons/Shutterstock Circling back to the limited warranty that comes with your device, a big limiting factor here is that it’s restricted to manufacturing or component failures, particularly those that …

Philosophers Can Be Awesome At Political Phone Banking

Philosophers Can Be Awesome At Political Phone Banking

As I write, the 2024 U.S. federal election is in its final stretch, and it’s a nail-biter. A few thousand swing voters may well decide the future of the country when it comes to climate change, social injustice, abortion access, international war, free speech, and even the basic structure of American democracy. Most academic philosophers I know (students and instructors) care a lot about this election, but many feel helpless to do more than vote or donate to campaign funds. But I think we have another way to make an impact: we can phone bank, and we’re positioned to be pretty good at it, perhaps even awesome. No doubt: phone banking is nerve-wracking. It can feel invasive to call strangers, and it’s no fun when someone hangs up on you. I’m a fairly seasoned phone-banker, but my heart still starts racing whenever I start—and I often end up cutting my shift short. It would help if there were clear evidence that phone banking makes a big impact but, unfortunately, the empirical evidence about that is …

Is Your Android Phone Showing the Wrong Time? Here’s How to Fix It

Is Your Android Phone Showing the Wrong Time? Here’s How to Fix It

Key Takeaways Enabling the “Automatic date and time” setting allows your Android phone to synchronize its date and time settings via the internet, ensuring it remains accurate. Make sure your Android phone is set to the correct time zone so that it adjusts the clock during Daylight Saving Time (DST) transitions. You may have to consider installing Android updates or factory resetting the device if it continues to show the wrong date and time. You may sometimes notice your Android phone’s clock being off by a few minutes or even up to a full hour in extreme cases. While this might seem like a minor inconvenience, it can quickly disrupt your daily routine. Fortunately, you can try these fixes. 1 Turn Automatic Date Settings Off and On One of the easiest ways to fix the wrong date and time on your Android phone is to enable the “Automatic date and time” setting. If it’s already enabled, you can try turning it off and then back on. Here’s how to do it: Open the Settings app …
