Building a safer path to autonomous industrial AI

Building a safer path to autonomous industrial AI

Arti: Yeah, so I think for us, we think about a triple mandate around responsible AI, and that means that it’s secure, it’s efficient, and that includes environmentally efficient, and then it really preserves human safety and human oversight above all. And for us, that’s what some of our core pillars of responsible AI include. And for us, that means we think about internally as we build tools, a multi-layered governance approach where we’ve got both for how we use AI as a company and then how we deploy AI into our products. We’ve got a similar framework that we leverage across both, a kind of joint governance model, both around how we’re leveraging AI and also how we’re infusing AI into our products to allow our customers to leverage AI in their operations. But I would say one of the core foundational principles underneath all of these is that human beings still remain centered in how we think about how AI is leveraged. And so human judgment, human responsibility, human ethics are still core …

Finding a Path Forward After Sibling Abuse

Finding a Path Forward After Sibling Abuse

This post was co-authored with Amy Meyers, Ph.D., LCSW You can find help that will help move you forward and find healthy relationships, even if this one never will be. Once you know this was abusive behavior, trauma therapy is out there in a variety of forms, and you can learn about your true self, your values, and create a plan for a better life that speaks to you inside. —Testimonial submitted to the SAARA Story Archive Adults who have survived childhood and/or adolescent experiences of sibling abuse may continue to struggle with the long-term emotional outcomes. The impacts of sibling abuse occur both as it is happening and well into adulthood. Adult survivors often face challenges in managing anger and conflict, navigating sibling and family relationships, and finding healing and a path forward. Managing Anger and Conflict For many people, anger is a complicated emotion. It may surface quickly, feel too strong for the current situation, or, alternatively, feel entirely unavailable. As children, survivors of sibling abuse likely lacked safe opportunities to express anger, …

When Feeling Lost Is a Path Forward

When Feeling Lost Is a Path Forward

There are seasons in life when the path ahead feels clear, and others when you have no idea where you’re going. This excerpt from Notes on Hope is for anyone who happens to be in one of those more uncertain chapters right now. It’s a reminder that if you’re feeling a little lost, perhaps you don’t need to find your way just yet. Why Feeling Lost is Part of Growth There will be chapters in your life when you don’t know where you’re going. The map is blurry, the path is uncertain, and every direction feels equally possible and impossible. Feeling lost isn’t a failure—it’s a sign that you’re in motion, even if it doesn’t feel like it yet. You’re in the process of evolving, of shedding one version of yourself before fully stepping into the next. You’re in the process of getting lost in order to find your way. Detours that feel like mistakes are often your biggest teachers. They slow you down, they reroute you, and they throw questions at you that you …

3 Things I Wish I Did Earlier on the Path to Non-Parenthood

3 Things I Wish I Did Earlier on the Path to Non-Parenthood

When you don’t have kids, you get to design your life with a script that flexes over the years. Only in hindsight can I see how my younger self might have benefited had I given attention to several things earlier in life. 1. Befriend older childfree and childless women. I’d always enjoyed close relationships with those older than me—teachers, work mentors, and women I met at various workshops and retreats. Building trust with these women was like having the big sisters I didn’t get growing up, and I loved their advice and support. In my 20s and well into my 30s, I wasn’t sure motherhood was for me. My younger sisters started having kids. Friends, too. Pressure to follow their lead grew as I focused on building my career. Only when a dear friend decided to have kids did I pause to reflect on my own intentions. After some reflection and discussion with my then-husband, we decided to go for it. I distinctly remember wondering aloud about what else we were going to do with …

Building a practical path to post-quantum cryptography

Building a practical path to post-quantum cryptography

A natural evolution, not a cliff edge The “quantum threat” narrative often swings between two extremes: imminent catastrophe or distant irrelevance. The reality occupies a more pragmatic middle ground. Quantum computers are highly specialized accelerators that exploit quantum physics to solve specific hard problems. They have the potential to crack modern encryption, but they will not replace classic servers overnight, nor will they instantly break every encryption protocol on the internet. What they will do is gradually shift the security landscape, much as previous cryptographic transitions have done over the past three decades. In late 2024, the Global Risk Institute, a Toronto-based financial services think tank, surveyed 32 quantum computing experts on when a quantum computer could break a 2048-bit RSA key within 24 hours. An average of optimistic and pessimistic estimates from the experts gave it an even 50-50 probability of reaching this code-breaking milestone by 2040. This timeline, uncertain but measurable, creates space for deliberate planning rather than emergency reaction. The near-term focus should be on “harvest now, decrypt later” scenarios, where adversaries …

The path to artificial superintelligence

The path to artificial superintelligence

“The gap is architectural, not a prompting problem,” Pandey adds. “Without the right coordination layer, naive multi-agent setups can perform worse than a single agent. The step change is that team of agents converging on its own, on a new problem, with no human stitching the seams.” To reach this goal, Pandey says Outshift has built a connectivity layer called AGNTCY, an open-source project now under the Linux Foundation. AGNTCY allows agents across different systems, companies, and platforms to find each other, prove identity, and exchange messages through open, standardized protocols. And, as Pandey explains, this allows the Internet of Cognition thesis to take a step further. It creates a semantic layer that allows agents to align goals (share intent), pool institutional knowledge and compound memory (share context), and make collective trade-offs (share reasoning). Pandey likens this progression to that of humans: “For hundreds of thousands of years humans got individually smarter, and the gains died with each person who made them,” he explains. “Around 70,000 years ago that changed, when humans learned to share …

4 myths cause us to abandon science. Here’s the path back.

4 myths cause us to abandon science. Here’s the path back.

There are a lot of people who think they know what science is, what science tells us, and how to evaluate claims based on their scientific merits. But are their assessments accurate? How do you, yourself, conceive of science? Do you do what most people do, and default to what you learned about science across a variety of classes in school, with a layer of cynicism and skepticism layered atop it? That’s understandable, as many of us remember being taught “facts” in our science classes that later were shown to be — if not completely incorrect — at least “not as they seemed” at the time. It’s as though, somewhere along the lines, many of us were taught that science is simply a collection of isolated facts about the world, and then our ability to regurgitate those facts was used as a metric to measure how good we were at science, even though: Many of those facts may have felt absurd. Many of the experiments we performed didn’t give the results we were told they …

Our Inner Poet’s Path to Personal Growth

Our Inner Poet’s Path to Personal Growth

A Roman physician, Soranus in the first century A.D., was known to prescribe drama—composed of poetry—for healing. He recommended attending tragedies for his manic patients and comedies for his depressed patients. For many centuries the connection between poetry and medicine remained in people’s consciousness. Pennsylvania Hospital, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1751, used bibliotherapy, reading and writing, as useful treatments for mental patients. Dr. Benjamin Rush, “Father of American Psychiatry,” believed in the effectiveness of music and literature. In all these instances, the evocative power of poetry and the access poetry grants to emotions and catharsis were appreciated as paths to healing. We can see how poetry opens us to parts of ourselves that may not be found otherwise. The resolution of problems and the healing of our emotional wounds can happen as we bring poetry to specific stresses that face all of us. Writing poetry can also be a pathway of spiritual growth, emotional growth, and healing. Contacting our spirituality through poetry does not mean that we must write religious poems or haikus. Any …

The Path of Integration: Returning Home to Yourself

The Path of Integration: Returning Home to Yourself

As a psychotherapist, I’ve spent 25 years and almost 45,000 hours joining clients as they piece together their lives through hardship and complexity. Everyone has different personal goals, but I believe many clients are seeking the same ideals: peace and wholeness. I’ve been reflecting recently on what lies at the center of these twin values. And I’ve concluded that the central path to peace and wholeness is integration and congruence. Integration is when our values, emotions, strengths, wounds, and history work together rather than against each other. This is the process of becoming whole. When these aspects battle against each other, peace is nowhere to be found. Each of us must learn to live as a complete person rather than as many versions of ourselves. And congruence is living according to those inner values, and acting according to your authentic self. Professionally and personally, I have found that alignment brings peace. So, how do we create this alignment? Know Who You Are We all have deeply held beliefs about who we are and what matters …
