Houthis threaten escalation after strike on Saudi oil giant Aramco

Yemen’s Houthis vowed on Wednesday to press on with attacks on airports and oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, a day after a strike that sources said caused extensive damage to the headquarters of oil giant Saudi Aramco.   The Houthis said the threatened locations were legitimate targets and described their attacks as retaliation for Saudi strikes on Yemen – threatening to escalate a conflict reignited by the US-Iran confrontation in the Gulf.   Saudi Arabia has faced widening Houthi strikes over the past week, including an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday that killed 13 people.   Read moreSaudi Arabia threatens ‘decisive’ response after Riyadh airport strike kills at least 12 Tuesday night’s attack on Saudi Aramco’s base in the eastern city of Dhahran caused a fire that spread across several floors, three people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The Saudi energy ministry had said the strike caused a limited fire.   Operations at Aramco were continuing normally, with employees working from home, according to two of the sources. Aramco did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment. Houthis say targeted Saudi oil giant Aramco, vow more attacks

Yemen’s Houthis said Wednesday they had targeted facilities belonging to Saudi Aramco, after Saudi officials reported a strike on a building in an area housing the energy giant’s operations centre. Powerful explosions meanwhile rattled the Saudi capital, as the coalition fighting the Houthis said it had intercepted a missile fired by the Iran-backed group towards Riyadh. Source link

Electric cars saved B in oil – and the US is falling behind

Electric cars saved $20B in oil – and the US is falling behind

EVs are giving oil-importing countries some breathing room during the Hormuz energy crisis. Between March and August, their EV fleets displaced an estimated $20 billion worth of crude oil, according to new analysis from energy think tank Ember. And while more countries are going electric, the US is losing ground. Fifteen countries, including India and Brazil, have overtaken it this year in the share of new vehicles sold that are fully electric. $20 billion worth of oil avoided Ember estimates that electric cars in oil-importing countries displaced 200 million barrels of crude oil between March and August. That’s oil those countries didn’t need to fuel their cars while supplies were disrupted. The $20 billion figure is Ember’s estimate of the value of that displaced oil. China accounted for most of that, avoiding an estimated $14 billion worth of crude oil consumption. EU countries saved another $3.1 billion, with Germany and France accounting for the largest shares. “The countries that invested in electric vehicles before this crisis are now better protected, and a growing number are …

Survey Sunday: Electrek readers find the silver lining in high fuel prices

Survey Sunday: Electrek readers find the silver lining in high fuel prices

For the last few weeks, we’ve been running a sidebar survey about whether our Electrek believed there might be some silver lining to the record-breaking fuel prices following the start of the war in Iran. After nearly 2,000 responses, here’s what you told us. In case you missed the survey, the question read, “they say that every dark cloud has a silver lining, and the recent run of record fuel prices certainly seems like a dark cloud. Can we put a positive spin on it? In other words: what’s the silver lining of $7/gallon gas?” Longtime reader Harry Tuttle immediately understood that, unlike most of our sidebar surveys, this one had a right answer. Kinda wanted to vote for Vespas! HARRY TUTTLE My longstanding love the music of The Who and Peter Weller notwithstanding, I believe there is something to be said for commuting on a lightweight two-wheeler that gets over 100 mpg and looks like a million bucks. And, while Vespa parent company Piaggio seems to have decided that people should pay $7,999 for an electric …

Treasury Hits Remaining ‘Shadow Fleet’ Shipping Iranian Oil To Asia With New Sanctions

Treasury Hits Remaining ‘Shadow Fleet’ Shipping Iranian Oil To Asia With New Sanctions

The Trump administration is late this week moving to identify, punish, and cut off remaining tankers in Iran’s so-called ‘shadow fleet’ which are still engaged in shipping Iranian oil to Asia. Thursday saw the US Treasury impose sanctions on 17 vessels and their owners involved in transporting Iranian crude oil, petroleum products and petrochemicals – with these being mostly aging oil tankers which conduct ship-to-ship transfers and other evasive, concealment tactics. The Treasury Department hailed the action as effectively neutralizing the vast majority of the Islamic Republic’s remaining shadow fleet, through which Tehran still rakes in potentially billions in foreign oil sales, circumventing the ongoing US naval blockade of its ports. However, it’s commonly estimated that some 20 million barrels of Iranian crude remain aboard ships which are far outside the reach of the Persian Gulf-centered US naval blockade, sitting off southeast Asian ports. “Treasury is starving the tyrannical regime in Tehran of the money it uses to wage war in the region, and we will continue exposing those who enable the regime’s oil sales,” Treasury …

Days ago, the oil industry around the U.S. Gulf Coast started preparing. A segment of the nation’s oil infrastructure — like oil rigs and platforms — operates in the region, although the majority of it is further west, towards western Louisiana and Texas. Although oil experts are not anticipating major disruptions, oil companies have been taking precautions. Shell and BP have evacuated personnel from offshore facilities close to the storm’s path, mainly deepwater platforms. Chevron has evacuated offshore drilling rigs close to the storm’s path, and plans to redeploy them once the storm has passed. In an emailed statement, Exxon told NPR they are “closely monitoring …

The Trump administration Thursday announced it would exempt some Arctic oil and gas exploration activities from environmental reviews. The Interior Department issued a notice exempting wintertime oil and gas exploration in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska from the reviews. Secretary Bessent weighs in after Iran oil minister resigns

Secretary Bessent weighs in after Iran oil minister resigns

Editor’s note: this story was translated from the original VOA Persian article. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has weighed in on the resignation of Iran’s oil minister earlier this week, and he suggested his replacement will have little work left, as a rigorous U.S. naval blockade halts Iran’s oil exports. “Iran has a new oil minister. Considering Iran has not loaded a single barrel of crude onto a vessel since August 25th, what is the oil minister managing?” Bessent asked Tuesday in a post on X. Hamid Bovard, the chief ‌executive of the Iran’s Oil Company was appointed after Mohsen Paknejad who held the post for over two years has resigned for “personal reasons.” Bessent said the U.S. economic campaign against Iran is delivering results. He pointed to the free-fall of the value of the Iran’s national currency, the rial, and the disruption in the transfer of crude oil over the past month. Iran’s currency was traded at 2.5 million rials against a U.S. dollar on Tuesday. Bessent also cited statements made by high-ranking Iranian …

Log in Christy Carlson Romano is not holding back about her working relationship with her former co-star Shia LaBeouf on the set of Disney Channel hit series Even Stevens. Although the pair played siblings Ren and Louis Stevens on the 2000s show, Romano admitted that their dynamic behind the scenes was more tense than familial. “It was oil and water,” the actor, now 42, confessed on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast Tuesday. She elaborates more on her relationship with LaBeouf in her new book, Once Upon a Trainwreck: The Fall and Rise of a Child Star, which comes out October 6. Romano said she was 14 and LaBeouf was 12 when they shot the pilot for the sitcom, which centered on the intense sibling rivalry between LaBeouf’s Louis, the chaotic misfit, and Romano’s Ren, the overachieving perfectionist. When asked by podcast host Amanda Hirsch why the co-stars did not get …
