Neil Gaiman Officially Taken to Court for…Very Bad Stuff.

Neil Gaiman Officially Taken to Court for…Very Bad Stuff.

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Neil Gaiman Officially Taken to Court Scarlett Pavlovich, who was a central figure in Lila Shapiro’s shattering story on Neil Gaiman, officially sued Gaiman in the Western District Court of U.S., claiming rape and human trafficking. Amanda Palmer was also accused of human trafficking in the filing. This is a civil suit not a criminal one (inidividuals of course cannot file ) criminal charges, and in civil court the standard of guilt is somewhat different. So in this example, a jury is instructed to convict if they believe “the preponderance of the evidence” shows that the accused did whatever it was they are accused of. Often this is described as a 51% chance that they did it, which is quite a bit lower than “beyond a reasonable doubt.” I have now read Shapiro’s piece, and I will say that even before people are under oath and discovery and the whole machinery of the legal process …

Spanning from 2025 to around 2039, this cohort follows Gen Alpha (2010–2024), Gen Z (1996–2010), and millennials (1981–1996). As with past generations, these dates are flexible, reflecting the evolving nature of generational definitions. What’s certain, however, is the world they’ll inherit—a planet navigating climate change, urbanization, and rapid technological shifts. According to a blog post from demographer and futurist Mark McCrindle, “Sustainability will not just be a preference but an expectation” for Generation Beta, pointing to the environmental challenges he predicts will shape societal values during their formative years. Technologically, Generation Beta is expected to also heavily utilize artificial intelligence and …

America’s Bird-Flu Luck Has Officially Run Out

America’s Bird-Flu Luck Has Officially Run Out

Yesterday, America had one of its worst days of bird flu to date. For starters, the CDC confirmed the country’s first severe case of human bird-flu infection. The patient, a Louisiana resident who is over the age of 65 and has underlying medical conditions, is in the hospital with severe respiratory illness and is in critical condition. This is the first time transmission has been traced back to exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency after weeks of rising infections among dairy herds and people. In Los Angeles, public-health officials confirmed that two cats died after consuming raw milk that had been recalled due to a risk of bird-flu contamination. Since March, the virus has spread among livestock and to the humans who handle them. The CDC has maintained that the public-health risk is low because no evidence has shown that the virus can spread among people, and illness in humans has mostly been mild. Of the 61 people who have so far …

Cady Noland, an Art World Recluse, Has Officially Come Back into the Fray

Cady Noland, an Art World Recluse, Has Officially Come Back into the Fray

Even just five years ago, it was unthinkable to imagine a sizable Cady Noland exhibition ever opening during her lifetime in the US, the country whose damaged national identity she has so incisively explored since the late 1980s. Her ramshackle installations composed of American flags, tossed-out Budweiser cans, and car parts have earned plenty of admirers and institutional cachet, but that appears to have mattered none to Noland, who at the time seemed to have essentially stopped showing new work sometime around 2000. Not long before the pandemic, she seemed to have gone silent altogether—no one knew for sure whether she still producing art, or if she had plans to exhibit any of it, if it did exist. There was even a rumor that she declined the opportunity to have a Museum of Modern Art retrospective. Related Articles But now, after having a retrospective in Germany in 2018, Noland has done the most surprising thing yet: she’s begun saying yes to powerful people who come knocking at her door, offering to exhibit her art. Last …

You Can Officially Buy a Diamond-Generating Machine on Alibaba

You Can Officially Buy a Diamond-Generating Machine on Alibaba

Any takers? Lab Fad Diamonds may be forever. But their market value? That might prove less eternal. In a sign of the times spotted by Ars Technica, you can now buy a diamond-generating machine on the Chinese online marketplace Alibaba for the humble asking price of just $200,000. It’s as good an example as any that lab-grown hunks of pressurized carbon are easier to make than ever, as the mined-diamond industry continues to lose some of its shine — not to mention its market dominance. The machine, which originates in China — as most of these do — uses what’s known as the high pressure and high temperature process, or HPHT, which essentially mimics the extreme conditions that lead to natural diamond formation deep in the Earth. But to produce diamonds more efficiently, you’re gonna wanna shell out at least twice that amount for a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) machine. This gizmo works by placing a thin diamond “seed” into a vacuum chamber, in which carbon-rich gasses are heated into plasma, leaving pure carbon atoms …

Lady Gaga’s Joker Press Tour Is Officially Underway, And It’s Off To A Gloriously Chaotic Start

Lady Gaga’s Joker Press Tour Is Officially Underway, And It’s Off To A Gloriously Chaotic Start

Well, Joker: Folie À Deux is now just a few short months away, and Gaga has given her first interview about the project. And folks… it’s a good ’un. Speaking to Empire, Gaga disclosed that she had to use her voice in a way like never before in order to perfect singing in character as Harley Quinn. “People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as that performer,” she explained. “But that is not what this movie is. “I’m playing a character. So I worked a lot on the way that I sang to come from Lee and to not come from me as a performer.” Gaga added: “How do you take music and have it just be an extension of the dialogue, as opposed to breaking into song for no conceivable reason? It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before.” Strap in, people, this press tour is going to be a treat. Joker: Folie À Deux hits cinemas on Friday 4 October. Watch the trailer below: Source link

Barron Trump officially in the mix, repping Florida at Republican National Convention

Barron Trump — the youngest of Donald Trump’s brood, who turned 18 on March 20 — is joining his siblings in the family’s political endeavors as a newly selected at-large delegate, representing Florida at the Republican National Convention in July. Having yet to even receive his high school diploma, the newly legal Trump has enjoyed a relatively private life, until now, but a Trump campaign official told ABC News that an interest in the family biz has always been there. “Yes, he’s on the delegation roster and Barron is very interested in our nation’s political process,” the campaign official said. NBC News was the first to spread the word that the Florida GOP tapped young Trump for the slot, sharing a statement from Florida GOP chairman Evan Power, saying, “We have a great delegation of grassroots leaders, elected officials and even Trump family members. Florida is continuing to have a great convention team, but more importantly we are preparing to win Florida and win it big.” Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law, was named co-chair of the RNC back in March. In a …

Switch 2 Will Be Officially Announced Before Next April, Nintendo Says

Switch 2 Will Be Officially Announced Before Next April, Nintendo Says

After plenty of rumors about the Switch 2, Nintendo has given its clearest signal yet that another console is coming. The company pledged to announce its follow-up to the 7-year-old Nintendo Switch in the next year.  The news comes after Nintendo released financial results from its last fiscal year, which ended March 31. In a post on X, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the company would introduce the successor to the Switch within the next fiscal year — in other words, between now and the end of March 2025. Nintendo didn’t release any additional details about the console, or even whether it would retain the Switch’s branding. The only hint at a timeline was in the remainder of Furukawa’s post, which noted that it’s been nine years since March 2015 and the initial reveal of the original Switch, which was then released two years later.  Furukawa also noted that further details wouldn’t be coming in the next Nintendo Direct product showcase, which is scheduled for June and will cover some games coming to the …

California has officially listed the desert tortoise as endangered. Will it be enough to save them?

California has officially listed the desert tortoise as endangered. Will it be enough to save them?

Native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States, the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) once roamed all over the vast Mojave and Sonoran deserts, marking the landscape with their distinctive dark brown and greenish-tan shells. Unfortunately for the species’ long-term survival, human beings have been destroying their habitat in a number of ways, from paving new roads and operating military bases to constructing utility plants and grazing livestock. The animals are also vulnerable to a range of deadly diseases such as upper respiratory illnesses and the shell disease cutaneous dyskeratosis, which softens their shells. Finally, as climate change worsens heat waves and intensified wildfires, desert tortoises suffer disproportionately. “They are a keystone species, meaning if they were to be removed from the ecosystem, we would see a cascade of ecological effects — an unbalancing.” Now the California Fish and Game Commission is officially recognizing what scientists and conservation experts have long asserted: The desert tortoise is an endangered species. The desert tortoise had previously been classified as “threatened” by the California Endangered Species Act in 1989, as …
