Mark Cuban offers to fund government tech unit that was cut in the middle of the night

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban waded into the latest government tech shake-up on Saturday, posting an unexpected offer of support for newly laid-off federal workers on the social network Bluesky. His message, which quickly gained traction, urged the displaced engineers and designers to turn the upheaval to their advantage. “If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company,” wrote Cuban. “It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably created. They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms. I’m happy to invest and/or help.” Cuban’s offer came after the government’s General Services Administration (GSA) abruptly gutted its 18F technology unit, which helps other government agencies build, buy, and share tech products. Per Politico, the layoffs affected roughly 70 individuals who learned the news around 1 a.m. Eastern time on Saturday. Among other things, the unit had reportedly built Login.gov, a secure and private way for the public to access services at government agencies, including …

Former Hampshire care home on sale for offers of £800k+

The former Alton House care home in Hayling Island, which ceased trading last December, is now on the market for offers of at least £800,000. With capacity for 18 residents, the detached two-storey property comprises five bedrooms on the ground floor and another nine on the first floor, of which five have en suite facilities. There’s a passenger lift and planning permission for an additional five ground-floor bedrooms plus office and staff room in the rear garden. The sale is being handled by Charles Phillips, director – care at Christie & Co. “This is a great opportunity to purchase a closed care home which offers the potential to be used for various purposes, subject to all necessary permissions,” said Charles. “While the home could be reopened as an elderly care home, it could also be of interest to specialist care operators for uses such as learning disabilities, supported living or mental health, as well as to residential developers, investors and those in the hospitality sector.” Source link

Early on Saturday morning, thieves blew open the door of the Drents Museum in the Netherlands and stole priceless gold artifacts, including an ancient, crown-like helmet on loan from a Bucharest museum for a traveling exhibit, reports NL Times. “This is a dark day for the Drents Museum in Assen and the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest,” said the director of the Drents Museum, Harry Tupan. The prized golden helmet of Cotofenesti from the fifth century BC dates to the ancient Dacians, who lived in modern-day Romania, and is a cherished part of the country’s cultural heritage. The helmet became better-known when it appeared on the cover of posters promoting the traveling exhibit titled “Dacia – Empire of Gold and Silver,” which was targeted at 3:45am on Saturday by robbers. Security cameras show they blew up the museum’s door, and along with the helmet, took other priceless gold bracelets from the same period. No injuries were …

Montage: Tortoise founder James Harding, Observer front page, Guardian and Observer offices, Scott Trust chair Ole Jacob Sunde Full report from the Guardian picket line: ‘Observer, Observer, James Harding don’t deserve her!’ Update 4/12/24: Hours before Guardian journalists started a 48-hour strike at midnight on 4 December, Scott Trust chair Ole Jacob Sunde offered new promises over the future of The Observer. His intervention makes clear that the Trust appears to be pressing on with the sale of The Observer, albeit whilst insuring certain safeguards are in place for the title and its 70 staff. Some 500 Guardian and Observer journalists have opted to strike in protest at plans to transfer ownership of The Observer to Tortoise Media, which says it has £20m to invest in the title. Staff have already passed a motion of no confidence in the 12-person Scott Trust board which owns Guardian Media Group. Thanks for subscribing. Justin Sun knew he wasn’t meant to eat the banana when he originally purchased it. Yet, in a room filled with media personnel at a hotel in Hong Kong, the 34-year-old TRON cryptocurrency founder swallowed the banana like it was any other. Before taking a bite, Sun sang the praises of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, arguing conceptual art was similar to cryptocurrency as he described the banana as “iconic.” “It’s much better than other bananas,” Sun proclaimed. “It’s really quite good.” Cattelan, 64, debuted the artwork at Art Basel in Miami, Florida, in 2019, titling it “Comedian.” The banana, which was regarded as “the most …

Gustave Caillebotte Retrospective Offers a Comprehensive Portrait

Gustave Caillebotte Retrospective Offers a Comprehensive Portrait

For around a century, Gustave Caillebotte was the most discreet of the Impressionists, only coming back into the spotlight in 1994, when the Grand Palais in Paris celebrated the centenary of his death in 1894 through a memorable retrospective. Ever since, the French painter has been the subject of several exhibitions from London to Washington, D.C. to Switzerland. Now, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Art Institute of Chicago have joined forces to examine Caillebotte anew, with a sweeping retrospective “Painting Men,” which runs through January in Paris, before heading to LA next spring and then Chicago next summer. Despite the acclaim the artist has received over the past three decades, he still remains a bit of a mystery, a major focus of the exhibition which also coincides with the 130th anniversary of the artist’s passing.  Related Articles “When facing this attractive, modern, yet enigmatic man—we still don’t know who he is—I realized we had good starting point,” Orsay curator Paul Perrin, who organized the exhibition …

Chinese Startup Offers Trips to Edge of Space for an Absolute Bargain, Sells Out in Minutes

Traveling to space could soon get a lot cheaper. Bargain Spacement Chinese space startup Deep Blue Aerospace recently took to social media to announce the sale of tickets for a 12-minute journey to the edge of space, which could take place as soon as 2027. Tickets were in hot demand, with the company selling two tickets for $210,000 apiece within a 20-minute live stream on the e-commerce platform Taobao. The company plans to sell more tickets sometime next month. While that may sound like a lot of money, it’s a fraction of the $600,000 it costs for a similar flight on board Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo space plane. And soaring to the edge of space on board Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket has been rumored to cost more than twice that per seat. But Deep Blue Aerospace still has a lot to prove. So far, the company has only begun testing a vertical take-off and landing of its liquid oxygen-kerosene “Nebula-1” rocket. Last month, the company’s rocket suffered an anomaly, resulting in a massive fireball on the …
