Thunderball jackpot winner from Scotland thought he had dreamt numbers coming up | UK News

[ad_1] A man has told how his dream quite literally came true after he discovered he had won the Thunderball jackpot prize of £500,000. Recently retired British Gas worker Raymond Young, from Edinburgh, initially checked his ticket while half-asleep. The next morning, the 63-year-old assumed he had dreamt that his numbers had come up – but realised he had indeed won the top prize after checking the ticket with a fresh pair of eyes. Mr Young, who has used the same Thunderball numbers since the lottery spin-off launched nearly 25 years ago, has already bought himself a new car and a holiday home since pocketing his winnings from the 23 March draw. Image: Pic: PA He said: “I had woken up in the middle of the night and randomly decided to check my numbers, which led me to see that I had won the top prize. “I must have still been half-asleep though as in the morning I genuinely thought it was all a dream. “So when I decided to have another check in the …

John Swinney at FMQs: New first minister vows to be ‘straight with the public’ as he dodges question on boosting teacher numbers | UK News

[ad_1] Scotland’s new first minister vowed to be “straight with the public” while he dodged answering a question on a previous promise to boost teacher numbers by 3,500 in this parliament. John Swinney led First Minister’s Questions for the first time in the top job after taking office this week. Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross kicked things off by highlighting a protest held in Glasgow on Wednesday over cuts to teacher numbers in the city. He said 100 teachers have already gone, with that projected to rise to 450. Mr Ross claimed there are 250 fewer teachers across the country than two years ago. He said: “Across Scotland, teacher numbers have declined for two years running and a new Scottish government report published this week suggests that the SNP may abandon their manifesto pledge to increase teacher numbers by 3,500. “The first minister made that promise when he was education secretary. “So, will he be honest with pupils, parents and teachers today? Is he going to stick to his promise to increase teacher numbers by …

[ad_1] FISHING FOR PEARLS In Mie prefecture’s Masaki Island, for instance, there used to be more than 1,000 people working in the industry. Today, there are only 40, with many of them elderly. As the number of pearl farmers declines, related businesses with century-long histories are also dwindling.  Over in Kashikojima, an island in Mie known for its pearl jewellers, many of the owners are getting on in years.  Faced with diminishing prospects, younger people there are moving to the big cities to find work. “The industry is gradually shrinking, with fewer people,” said Mr Naoto Yoshimori, president of pearl jeweller Yoshimori Pearls.  He fears his third-generation family business would end with him, as his children do not appear keen to take over the store.  “I have two sons. They have moved on in different directions,” said Mr Yoshimori.  “I will try to keep going for a little bit more. If they come home, they don’t need to work hard. It could be their side business.” [ad_2] Source link

Susanna Reid Roasts Robert Jenrick Over Immigration Numbers

Susanna Reid Roasts Robert Jenrick Over Immigration Numbers

[ad_1] A former Tory immigration minister was roasted by Susanna Reid after he unveiled proposals to slash the number of people coming to the UK. Robert Jenrick says he wants to cut net migration to “the tens of thousands” – a Conservative pledge first made by David Cameron before he became prime minister. However, despite 14 years of Tory government, official figures revealed that net migration in the year to June 2023 was 672,000. On ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Reid told him: “That record level of legal migration – some people might think it’s a good thing because immigrants bring enormous value to the economy. But you are arguing that it’s too high. “That happened on your watch, on the Conservative government’s watch. This is 14 years that the Conservatives have been in government and we’ve got record levels of legal migration.” ‘That record level of legal migration happened on your watch. You’ve now resigned from the government and expect to have a powerful voice complaining about it’@susannareid100 questions Robert Jenrick over his his legal …

Nikola (NKLA) Q1 2024 numbers: Production and revenue down

[ad_1] Nikola Corporation has posted its Q1 2024 financial report ahead of a call with investors this morning, and the numbers detail a commercial vehicle developer growing amid setbacks that arose last year. Today’s update mainly focuses on hydrogen as Nikola looks to execute deliveries while making good on issues with its BEV trucks. It’s been an eventful twelve months for Nikola Corporation ($NKLA). During its Q1 2023 financial report, the American commercial vehicle manufacturer hinted at a weaning down of staff and company spending to optimize hydrogen and BEV truck production. By Q2 2023, however, Nikola was presented with a significant issue as the Romeo Power battery packs in its BEV trucks started catching fire. The fire was not an isolated incident either; it warranted an investigation from the local fire department amid multiple fires, eventually leading to the automaker’s fourth CEO stepping down while Nikola’s stock tanked. Nikola had to recall all 209 BEV trucks in operation while it simultaneously worked to expand its lineup of hydrogen trucks. That process is going much …

Tourist numbers turning Lake Windermere green, researchers say | Climate News

[ad_1] The flood of tourists to the Lake District is turning Lake Windermere green by driving algal blooms, according to new research. The study – funded by the UK Space Agency – is believed to be the first to examine the impact of visitor numbers on the ecology of the lake in Cumbria. Algal blooms are fuelled by high levels of nutrients – which can come from sewage – and high temperatures. They can make the water toxic or starve wildlife of oxygen. The Save Windermere campaign group, which helped organise the study, said it showed a “direct correlation” between the number of visitors and algal blooms. “With a clear link between human activity and algal growth, action is imperative,” said Matt Staniek, founder of Save Windermere. “Save Windermere is calling for complete removal of all sewage from Windermere.” United Utilities has released more than 27,000 hours of untreated sewage since 2020, according to Save Windermere’s analysis of Environment Agency (EA) data. Water companies can legally do this in emergencies to prevent sewage backing up …

Lucid (LCID) Q1 2024 numbers: Deliveries, revenue up YOY

[ad_1] Ahead of its call with investors this afternoon, Lucid Motors has posted its Q1 2024 financial results. The numbers aren’t mind-blowing, but the American automaker is making slow improvements in EV deliveries and revenue as it gears up to launch its second model later this year. Today’s full Q1 2024 financial report follows a peek at delivery numbers Lucid Motors ($LCID) made public in April. The American EV automaker reported record deliveries of its Air sedan to date, sending 1,967 vehicles to customers in the first three months of the year. That metric bested its previous delivery record of 1,932 units in Q4 2022 and is up 13% compared to Q4 2023 (1,734 deliveries). That being said, Air production is significantly down following a dawdling demand for its lone model, which recently saw some 2024 model year updates and lower pricing. Lucid produced a mere 1,727 BEVs in Q1 2024, down from 2,391 units in Q4 2023 (-27%). Still, Lucid Motors remains quite liquid following a fresh raise of private funds and has expressed …

Vásquez/AP The echoes of barking and blubber-slapping have grown louder in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. An unusually large herd of sea lions hauled out of the bay waters to hang out on the docks at Pier 39, a popular tourist destination. It’s the most sea lions the area has seen in 15 years, according to pier officials. Over 1,000 sea lions were counted this week, Pier 39 harbormaster Sheila Chandor told multiple media outlets. A bounty of anchovies and herring in the bay waters has drawn the pinnipeds to feast ahead of mating season, which starts next month, Chandor told SF Gate. “It’s all about the food,” she told the Associated Press. “They are fueling up for the mating season. It’s spring. They are ready to rock and roll down in the Channel Islands, …

Ex-Home Office minister Robert Jenrick demands migrant numbers capped at 100k | Politics | News

[ad_1] Robert Jenrick has called for migrant numbers entering Britain to be capped at 100,000. The former Home Office minister, who resigned in protest at the Rwanda bill, said introducing a parliamentary “lock” on numbers would “restore voters’ trust”. Net migration – the number of immigrants coming to the UK minus those who emigrate – hit a record high of 745,000 in 2022.In a report, Taking Back Control, the ex-immigration minister argues that the government should introduce a “migration budget” which would cap both overall migration levels and how many people can come to Britain via visa routes. These limits would be set and voted on by parliament, with the report recommending that a cabinet minister should be required to provide an annual update on the pressure that migration is placing on housing, infrastructure and public services, such as the NHS.It also argues that the UK must become the “grammar school of the western world” by toughening up the points-based system, introduced after Brexit, to ensure that the vast majority of visas are offered to …
