Arriving at Barentsburg (Image: Tom Burnett/Reach PLC) The sun is high in the late April sky as the ship makes its way down the fjord – although this is not surprising, I’m so far north that it is not set to go down until August. It has been several hours since the MS Billefjord pulled away from the quay at Longyearbyen, the largest town on Svalbard and by most estimates the most northerly town of any size in the world, with around 2,300 making it their home. There are few other settlements of any size on Svalbard anymore, many of the coal mining operations that brought people to this remote Arctic archipelago at scale have closed down – following the path of the intrepid European whalers who would wait out the winter season in this barren land centuries before. As the ship makes its way through the choppy waters of the Isfjorden I keep an eye out on the shore for the elusive polar bears that live on this remote land at what feels like …

Athletics-Father of Ingebrigtsen Brothers Charged With Physical Abuse

Athletics-Father of Ingebrigtsen Brothers Charged With Physical Abuse

(Reuters) -Norwegian police said on Monday they have pressed charges against Gjert Ingebrigtsen, the father of Olympic 1,500 metres champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, for alleged physical abuse. His lawyer said in a statement to Reuters that Ingebrigtsen had been “indicted on charges of domestic violence involving one of his minor children over a limited period. The case has been dismissed regarding all other alleged victims.” Ingebrigtsen, 58, has strenuously denied all the allegations. Jakob, 23, and his older brothers Henrik, 33, and Filip, 31, who are also Olympic runners, last year made public claims that their father – who was their coach until 2022 – had been violent. Norwegian police said only that Ingebrigtsen had been charged but did not elaborate. “Mr Ingebrigtsen disputes the account of events that form the basis of the indictment and, as such, does not acknowledge any criminal wrongdoing,” his lawyer John Christian Elden added in the statement. Slovaks crowd-fund ammo for Ukraine – POLITICO

Earlier this year, with Ukraine’s counteroffensive falling flat, Russia asserting dominance in artillery fire and U.S. aid to Kyiv mired in Washington politics, the Czech government set up a platform to gather donations from allied countries to co-finance the purchase of ammunition from producers around the world. In doing so, the aim was to side-step criticism from some EU countries such as France which only wanted to use public cash to support local stocks and raise billions for artillery. While EU countries such as Germany and Belgium to the likes of Canada and Norway have since lined up to pay into the Czech program, Fico’s government has refused to sanction military help for Ukraine with the prime minister even claiming that Prague “has an interest in supporting the war in Ukraine.” That prompted a group of politicians and campaigners in Bratislava to launch the crowd-funding initiative last Monday. “We refuse to accept the denial of aid to a war-torn neighbor,” the Ammunition for Ukraine group says on its website, which lists donations in real time. …

Norway just signed a contract for its first commercial offshore wind farm

Norway just signed a contract for its first commercial offshore wind farm

Norway has signed a contract with Ventyr Energi to develop Sørlige Nordsjø 2, its first commercial offshore wind farm. Norway’s energy minister, Terje Aasland, and wind consortium Ventyr Energi representatives signed the contract. Aasland said: This marks an important milestone in Norway’s commitment to renewable energy. I firmly believe that Sørlige Nordsjø II can be a catalyst to achieve our ambitions for the offshore wind industry in Norway. Ventyr Energi, a consortium formed by Parkwind and Ingka Investments, won Norway’s first auction to develop offshore wind in Sørlige Nordsjø 2 (Southern North Sea II) last month. The Norwegian government opened the application window for Norway’s first offshore wind auction in March 2023. It offered a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) at Sørlige Nordsjø II and 1.5 GW at Utsira Nord. In February, five groups qualified to participate in the auction: Aker Offshore Wind, BP, and Statkraft; Equinor and RWE; Norseman Wind, a subsidiary of EnBW; Shell, Lyse, and Eviny; and Ventyr. Norway’s aim is to achieve 30 GW of offshore wind power by 2040.  Read more: This …

Shrinking Arctic ice redraws the map for internet cable connections – POLITICO

Shrinking Arctic ice redraws the map for internet cable connections – POLITICO

The problem of critical data relying on only one path is clear. “It’s clearly a kind of concentration of several cables, which means that there is a risk that areas will bottleneck,” Taneli Vuorinen, the executive vice president at Cinia, a Finland-based company working on an innovative pan-Arctic cable, said. “In order to meet the increasing demand, there’s an increasing pressure to find diversity” of routes, he said. The Far North Fiber project is seeking to offer just that. The 14,500 kilometer long cable will directly link Europe to Japan, via the Northwest Passage in the Arctic, with landing sites in Japan, the United States (Alaska), Canada, Norway, Finland and Ireland. It would have been unthinkable until just a few years ago, when a thick, multiyear layer of ice made navigation impossible. But the Arctic is warming up at a worrying pace with climate change, nearly four times faster than the rest of the world. Sea ice is shrinking by almost 13 percent every decade. Source link

However, he added, the priority should now be replacing gas with renewables: “We don’t want really this business. Our business is to have clean energy here in Spain and also in Europe.” Nicolás González Casares, an MEP from Spain’s governing Socialist party says the priority should now be replacing gas with renewables. | Ander Gillenea/AFP via Getty Images Industry representatives caution against leaving fossil fuels behind too quickly. They insist that even under the EU’s gas reduction plans, there is still a need to secure extra LNG supplies, particularly given the pressure to divest from Moscow’s exports.  Narek Terzian, a spokesperson for the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, pointed to a “gap between projected demand” under the EU’s current forecasts “and the actual supply that we know of, if you take out Russia.” “That’s the supply gap to be bridged,” Terzian argued. “And so it is extremely important that Europe be able to secure the necessary volumes from the U.S.”  The numbers paint a mixed picture. European gas demand hit a record low …
