How Many Times Is Normal To Wake Up At Night?

How Many Times Is Normal To Wake Up At Night?

Did you know that getting up at night to pee has a name (nocturia)? Not only that, but it turns out there are “normal” amounts of midnight number ones to expect by age, too. Younger people usually get up to urinate once a night, while those in their 90s may still be in the “usual” range if they make four trips in the wee hours. But not all nocturnal disruptions are to do with the loo. According to a 2010 study, just under a third of us wake up in the middle of the night at least three times a week; while older research found 23% of us get up a minimum of once a night. And according to experts at the Sleep Foundation, those numbers might be affected by age, as after 60, they say, our circadian rhythm changes. What’s a normal amount of times to get up at night? As teens, our circadian rhythms lengthen – meaning our “natural” awakening point is later than usual. But they shorten between the ages of 60-65 …

Dave Chappelle’s Sincere Plea on ‘Saturday Night Live’

Dave Chappelle’s Sincere Plea on ‘Saturday Night Live’

The four-time host took a break from punching down to deliver a timely message. Will Heath / NBC January 19, 2025, 5 PM ET No matter how much has changed over the past decade, one thing remains true: Saturday Night Live never brings in Dave Chappelle for a filler episode. The comedian has now hosted the show four times in just more than eight years, each stint coming on the heels of a pivotal election. Last night, in the SNL installment preceding President-Elect Donald Trump’s second inauguration on Monday, Chappelle opened his monologue by detailing his attempts to turn down the daunting gig this time around. The SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels had apparently tried persuading Chappelle to again take the stage following the 2024 presidential election; Chappelle spent the several weeks prior to and after Trump’s reelection rejecting the offer. He eventually relented, he said, so that “I could just get rid of all these old Trump jokes and start fresh.” That lead-in suggested that Chappelle might spend the rest of his …

Everything You Need to Know About Saturday Night Live: A Deep Dive into Every Season of the Iconic Comedy Show

Everything You Need to Know About Saturday Night Live: A Deep Dive into Every Season of the Iconic Comedy Show

Saturday Night Live began its 50th season last fall, around the same time as the premiere of Jason Reitman’s film Saturday Night, which dramatizes the program’s 1975 debut. All of this has put fans into something of a retrospective mood, especially if they happen to have been tuning in since the very beginning. For others, SNL is a show they haven’t been watching all that long, used to watch, or watched at one time and have started watching again. With its ever-changing cast, writers, sketch concepts, and overall comedic sensibility, it’s never remained the same for too long at a stretch, and though many viewers have their favorite seasons, few grasp the full sweep of its history as a television institution. Now, anyone can get a sense of SNL in its entirety with Everything You NEED to Know About Saturday Night Live, a YouTube series that, true to its title, recounts the show’s most notable performers, characters, innovations, troubles, and moments planned or otherwise (often the latter, given the nature of the broadcast). Each season …

The Night When Miles Davis Opened for the Grateful Dead (1970)

The Night When Miles Davis Opened for the Grateful Dead (1970)

What’s that, you ask? Did Miles Davis open for the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West? In what world could such a thing happen? In the world of the late sixties/early seventies, when jazz fused with acid rock, acid rock with country, and pop culture took a long strange trip. The “inspired pairing” of the Dead with Davis’ electric band on April 9–12, 1970, “represented one of [promoter] Bill Graham’s most legendary bookings,” writes the blog Cryptical Developments. I’ll say. Davis had just released the groundbreaking double-LP Bitches Brew and was “at somewhat of an artistic and commercial crossroads,” experimenting with new, more fluid compositions. Aggressive and dominated by rock rhythms and electric instruments, the album became Davis’ best seller and brought him before young, white audiences in a way his earlier work had not.  The band that Davis brought into the Fillmore West, comprising [Chick] Corea, [Dave] Holland, soprano sax player Steve Grossman, drummer Jack Dejohnette, and percussionist Airto Moreira, was fully versed in this new music, and stood the Fillmore West audiences on …

‘Ozempic’s biggest night’: Nikki Glaser kicks off Golden Globes with jokes on sex scandal and voting

Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter for all the latest entertainment news and reviews Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Nikki Glaser pulled no punches as she kicked off the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, telling the A-List audience that the award show was “Ozempic’s biggest night.” The 33-year-old comedian, who is known for her dark and often offensive brand of humour, opened the 82nd annual awards show in Los Angeles by using her opening monologue to take aim at voting. Glaser previously told The Independent that anticipation for the show had made her feel “42 weeks pregnant, and she was excited to deliver her jokes “in front of the crowd they were meant for.” Glaser entered the spotlight for her cutting, dark, and often offensive jokes during U.S. comedy roasts, including those of Rob Lowe, Bruce Willis, and Alec Baldwin. She was also one of the standout performers at the roast of Tom Brady – broadcast on Netflix back in May. She has also received …

Bob Dylan Reads “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” On His Holiday Radio Show (2006)

Bob Dylan Reads “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” On His Holiday Radio Show (2006)

Allow me to name just a few of the people I want to hear hosting and curating radio shows—former Sex Pistols’ singer John Lydon, former Clash frontman Joe Strummer, former Woody Guthrie impersonator Bob Dylan.… Luckily for me, this ain’t just fantasy baseball; at various times, and with varying levels of commitment, each of these tastemakers has hosted a program showcasing their own favorite artists. In Dylan’s case, the commitment was pretty substantial. His show, Theme Time Radio Hour, ran for almost three years—once a week from 2006 to 2009—on satellite radio. Each episode centered on a general theme, hence the title, but the selections were all over the place—more or less what you’d expect from Dylan: an eclectic collection of folk, blues, gospel, soul, country, modern pop, and rock ‘n’ roll mixed with old-time radio jingles, novelties, and promos, and the host’s oddball commentary and hokey humor. Recorded while Dylan was on the road, then edited together with phony “listener calls” and emails, Theme Time Radio Hour aimed, Dylan said, “to expand the musical taste” of his …

The Best Christmas Horror Movies To Make It a Dark Winter’s Night

The Best Christmas Horror Movies To Make It a Dark Winter’s Night

Some might be put off by the self-consciousness of this low-budget slasher from writer-director Joe Beogs: not just its retro influences (a horror director who fetishizes ‘80s slasher movies?! You don’t say!) but the endless reams of reference-trading, profanity-laced dialogue, particularly between its record-store-clerk leads (Riley Dandy and Sam Delich). But beneath that perhaps-overwritten bravado, the movie has a surprisingly lovely sense of last-call Christmas Eve romance, reflected in the movie’s visual style, depending heavily on 16mm cinematography, Christmas-light glow, and swirls of grainy snow – a dependably gorgeous combination that Begos really milks for all it’s worth. Oh, and eventually a killer Santa-bot starts stalking and killing everyone in sight. But Begos really lets his characters breathe before the murders kick in, and Dandy makes a terrifically scrappy Final Girl. This is the rare slasher throwback that’s significantly better than most of the movies it’s throwing back to, and made with a lot more care than most quick-hit plays for streaming attention, too. Terrifier 3 (2024) Everett Collection Damien Leone’s bozo slasher epic continues …

Democrats Actually Had Quite a Good Night in North Carolina

Democrats Actually Had Quite a Good Night in North Carolina

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration. Tuesday evening, while waiting for national election results to come in, I dropped by the victory party for Mark Robinson, the North Carolina Republican nominee for governor. It was, as you might expect, a strange scene. Robinson, the lieutenant governor, had become persona non grata among most other Republicans in September, when a CNN report revealed his bizarre posts—about slavery, being a “Black Nazi,” transgender porn, and more—on the porn site Nude Africa. He was no longer invited to attend rallies for the Donald Trump campaign, his fundraising dried up, and his campaign was left for dead. The party, held on the top floor of a skyscraper in Raleigh, was pointedly separate from other North Carolina GOP festivities. Some 60 or 70 supporters crammed into a small room in a private club watching Fox News. It was a more diverse crowd than any other Republican gathering I’ve ever attended, and nearly everyone was decked out in Robinson gear. I noticed only one piece of …
