The Wild True Story Behind Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

The Wild True Story Behind Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

“I don’t know if it was stolen or not, but that’s the kind of nonsense that we can run into,” Eastland says, recounting the story. “I think at the end of the day, it could have been a lot harder.” Once he got the car from a used car lot in Riverside, he still had to gut it—something even he admits was “sacrilegious.” But, Eastland argues, the people who appreciate Lamar’s music and his passion for the GNX were “going to need to see the car and not a cheap imposter” during Sunday’s halftime show. Still, I have to ask, could the car be put back together again? Sadly, no. It could go on tour with Lamar, Eastland says, but its days as a street-legal vehicle are over. Eastland says he’s lucky he bought the GNX before its appearance in the halftime show drives up its value on the used market even more. “I got to believe that the price for these things is going to go way up for a while.” Lamar, and the …

What’s good, kinfolk? So maybe you’ve heard: the Super Bowl is this weekend! And you’ve probably also heard: President Trump will also be there! Oh, and perhaps not coincidentally: The NFL is removing the lettering from the end zone on its football fields that reads “END RACISM”! The NFL started using the lettering back in 2020, in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and the nationwide protests that followed. But for many reading between the lines of the NFL’s decision to do away with that lettering, they saw this: America’s most popular sports league was downplaying its diversity, equity, and …

Why AI could replace NFL first-down markers sooner than you might think

Why AI could replace NFL first-down markers sooner than you might think

For more than 100 years, football has been officiated using a simple chain 10 yards long. The so-called chain gang has been the sport’s judge and jury, ruling whether a ball traveled the number of yards needed for a team to get a first down — and four more chances to score. But artificial intelligence and new technology could soon make the chain gang obsolete, with an advanced system known as Hawk-Eye aspiring to make the game faster and more accurate by mashing together high-tech software with a lot of cameras. In the 2024-25 preseason, the NFL tested Sony’s Hawk-Eye to make calls on “line to gain,” the officiating term for measuring the 10 yards a team needs to advance the ball to get a first down. Hawk-Eye uses up to 60 cameras, including those used for broadcasts, to piece together every possible angle on a given football play. That’s useful for referees who use it to scrub through the action frame by frame when they’re making play calls, but Sony and the NFL are …

Bert Kreischer as Netflix NFL Tailgate Host: What His Plans Are

Bert Kreischer as Netflix NFL Tailgate Host: What His Plans Are

When Netflix first picked up its package of Christmas Day NFL games, there was one thing everyone was wondering in Hollywood: Given the streamer’s desire to lean into big events, what would it do to make these games its sports event of the year, something everyone felt they needed to watch live? Netflix, it turns out, had an answer: Star power, and a lot of it. Beyonce will perform during halftime of the Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans game, and Mariah Carey will make a special appearance during the pregame programming. And it is rolling out a ton of talent for the studio shows and games themselves, including some of the top names from the other networks, like Ian and Noah Eagle, Greg Olsen, JJ Watt, Robert Griffin III, Mina Kimes, Drew Brees, and Nate Burleson. And it has turned to a pair of its favorite comedians to help “Netflix-ify” the affair: Nate Bargatze will be a special guest, and Bert Kreischer will serve as Netflix’s tailgate correspondent before the Pittsburgh Steelers-Kansas City Chiefs game. The 2 …

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade drew its largest cross-platform audience on record Thursday. NBC says 31.3 million viewers watched the parade on NBC and Peacock, based on preliminary Nielsen ratings and streaming figures from Adobe Analytics. That’s up 10 percent from last year’s total of 28.5 million — which was the previous all-time high. The last time any entertainment show drew a larger audience was the 2024 Oscars. NBC also says streaming hours on Peacock grew by 26 percent year to year, though it’s not specifying the exact number. Among adults 18-49, the parade’s live broadcast scored a 5.4 rating (equivalent to about 7.24 million people), the highest for any entertainment show on broadcast or cable since ABC’s New Year’s …

According to the Gauge, Amazon Prime Video posted the largest growth among all streaming services, growing by 12 percent thanks to Thursday Night Football and the Lord of the Rings series. Prime Video recorded 3.6 percent of all viewing in the month, while Peacock (which also had one exclusive NFL game) garnered 1.4 percent of viewing. Notably, Disney+ also delivered its best performance ever, garnering 2.5 percent of viewing.
