The Nerves Don’t Go Away

The Nerves Don’t Go Away

Maybe you’ve experienced it before: Your palms are sweating, your limbs feel weak or heavy, and your gut is unsettled. You’re nervous, and on the surface, you may or may not look calm and ready. And if you haven’t experienced it yourself, maybe you’ve heard Eminem rap about it. Or Simone Biles talk about it. Or Lebron James admit that even 20-plus years into his NBA career he still gets nervous—even before regular season games. Or on a normal Tuesday. Why? Because he loves what he does and he loves that he’s still getting to do it. He welcomes the nerves: the nerves, he says, give him a sense of being present, of feeling alive. So if you’re looking forward to a point in your athletic (or performance) career when you don’t get so nervous anymore, maybe it’s time to stop. Because the nerves don’t go away when you’re excited about what it is you get to do. And the nerves can even help you to perform at your best. The trickiest things about nerves …

At the Sudzha crossing where Ukrainian troops pushed into Russia nerves are tense | Ukraine

At the Sudzha crossing where Ukrainian troops pushed into Russia nerves are tense | Ukraine

The journey from the Ukrainian city of Sumy to the Russian border is short. In about three-quarters of an hour it is possible to arrive at a smashed-up Ukrainian border post and stare over two simple lines of fencing into Russian fields to the right. Except the territory beyond is no longer under Kremlin control. The Sudzha crossing is now 5 miles or so from the current frontline inside Russia’s Kursk oblast. For now at least, it remains very much in Ukrainian hands a full week into the border incursion; on a brief visit what could be heard were the pops of outgoing artillery, not the crumps of incoming shells. Edgy military guards, clips of rifle ammunition tucked into chest pouches, blocked further progress into Russia, a swathe of territory that Ukraine’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday it had no interest in permanently occupying. Instead, it said the attack was justified “to protect the lives of our people” – part of a creative attempt at self-defence, striking where the Russians are weakest. The crossing fell …

Cardi B Blames Offensive Met Gala Moment On Nerves – Before Deleting Non-Apology

Cardi B Blames Offensive Met Gala Moment On Nerves – Before Deleting Non-Apology

Cardi B posted, and subsequently deleted, a video defending a foot-in-mouth moment at Monday’s Met Gala. All eyes were on the rapper as she made her way up the stairs in a giant black gown by designer Sensen Lii of Windowsen, but when it was time to tell everyone who’s fashion she was wearing, Cardi blanked. Instead of saying she forgot, the Up artist referred to Lii as “this amazing designer” who is “Asian and everything”, a move that made more than a few fashionistas cringe. One particular critic was Vogue’s former managing editor Gilbert Cheah, who remarked on Cardi’s flub in an Instagram comment. “For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardi B, the designer of her gown is Sensen Lii who’s Chinese,” Cheah said of the sprawling ebony design, which needed seven assistants to carry and unfurl. “The gown took two months to make,” the fashion editor noted. Ending with a dig, he said: “I personally think it’s boring and not even on theme but she chose it and should have …

‘Like the Somme without the generals’: Tory nerves grow as local elections loom | Local elections

The local elections on 2 May have long been regarded as a moment of high peril for Rishi Sunak, with the results likely to anticipate his party’s fate at the next election. “My colleagues are feeling very restless,” admits one moderate Tory MP. “Rishi needs to show us that the general election isn’t already lost. If we lose the mayoralties in May then I’m afraid we could be on course for a total wipeout. It could be very dangerous for him.” The Tories have already priced in heavy losses in the council elections, with experts predicting they face defeat in as many as half of their contested seats. Loyalists point out that many were last fought in 2021, when a still relatively popular Boris Johnson was in No 10 and the government had not yet been rocked by the Partygate scandal or Liz Truss’s emergency budget. The party was also 10 points ahead of Labour in the national polls – but are now 20 points behind. Such a high-water mark means that, four years on, …

Chemical cocktail could restore sight by regenerating optic nerves

Glaucoma occurs when the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged Ian Miles / Alamy The vision of mice with damaged optic nerves has been partly restored by generating new nerve cells in the eye to replace ones that died. The hope is this approach could help treat people with conditions that cause blindness by damaging the optic nerve, such as glaucoma. “We can regenerate those cells,” says Biraj Mahato at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in California. But more studies in larger animals will have to be done before… Source link
