More than 100 foreign trekkers stranded in flood-hit region of Nepal, official says

KATHMANDU: More than 100 foreign trekkers are stranded at different locations after the flooding of a river in central Nepal at the weekend swept away hiking trails and bridges, an official said on Monday (Oct 12). Authorities rescued 321 people, including 12 foreigners, on Monday after a pre-dawn landslide at the weekend in Gorkha district, about 100km west of Kathmandu, blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, leading to downstream flooding. The army said the rescue operation would continue on Tuesday, even as the water level in the river had receded. The river is a tributary of the Trishuli River, downstream from another tributary where a glacier collapse caused a catastrophic flood in August that killed 1,457 people, with thousands still missing. There were no reports of fatalities in the flood, but five villagers were out of contact after black muddy sludge and debris washed away homes and damaged infrastructure, including three hydroelectric plants, national disaster authorities said. Bhuwan Raj Ojha, an official of the Manaslu Conservation Area Project that includes a popular trekking route, said there …

Nepal urges villagers to evacuate after flood triggered by landslide

Nepal urges villagers to evacuate after flood triggered by landslide

KATHMANDU: Nepali authorities urged villagers on Sunday (Oct 11) to move to safer places after a massive flood in a river in the central part of the country swept away several houses and infrastructure, but there were no reports of any casualties. A dry landslide in Chumnubri village in Gorkha district, about 100km west of Kathmandu, blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, leading to downstream flooding, authorities said. The Budhi Gandaki is a tributary of the Trishuli River, downstream from another tributary where a glacier collapse caused a catastrophic flood in August that killed 1,457 people, with thousands still missing. “We have asked villagers living along the river banks downstream to evacuate and remain safe,” said Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, the Gorkha district’s most senior bureaucrat. Mishra said about a dozen houses and two suspension bridges had been swept away, and a hydroelectric project was damaged by the flood. The flooded river carrying muddy sludge is rising and has washed away a highway bridge connecting Gorkha with the neighbouring Dhading district, said Dharam Raj Uprety, chief of …

Nepal Avalanche Toll Rises to 15 Deaths With Discovery of 8 Bodies on Mount Himlung

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Rescuers discovered eight bodies at the base camp of Mount Himlung in Nepal on Thursday, raising the total number of deaths to 15 following an avalanche during severe weather Sunday. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, which is leading the search, said rescuers dug through snow on Mount Himlung to find eight bodies in tents at the base camp, where one person remains missing. “Due to continuing mountain hazards, recovery efforts have been temporarily concluded,” the association said. “Further efforts may be possible when conditions allow.” Experienced mountain guides from the association took advantage of good weather and worked through the week to dig through the snow that covered the base camp. Rescuers located 10 other climbers who were part of the group on Mount Himlung, a 7,126-meter (23,380-foot) peak in north-central Nepal, which is home to eight of the 14 tallest mountain peaks in the world including Mount Everest. The avalanche is considered one of the worst disasters in Nepal mountaineering history. Every year hundreds of foreign climbers come to …

Nepal’s hydropower ambitions face climate reality check

Nepal’s hydropower ambitions face climate reality check

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s hydropower boom has long been touted as a cornerstone of economic growth and renewable energy, but the devastating flood in August exposed its vulnerability. The disaster triggered by a glacial mountain collapse on the China-Nepal border killed more than 1,400 people and left thousands missing -while knocking 410 megawatts, or about 10 per cent of the generation capacity, out of Nepal’s power system. More than 90 percent of Nepal’s electricity comes from hydropower, but extensive damage to its river projects has prompted questions about its energy security as climate and geological risks intensify. “Hydropower has been a major driving force in growth of the country … generating jobs and income,” Uttam Bhlon Lama, senior vice president of the Independent Power Producers’ Association (IPPAN), told AFP. “It was bringing huge hope and future prospects to the people,” he said, adding that the country would now have to rethink its dam-building spree. “We have to prepare… This is our new normal.” Over the past decade, the Himalayan nation has increased hydropower output more than fourfold …

‘Orphaned’ by floods, more than 500 Nepali children face uncertain future | Floods News

Dhading; Rasuwa; Nuwakot, Nepal – As nine-year-old Ram Thakur walked uphill with his mother and dozens of others fleeing floodwaters on August 26, he looked back and saw brown water surging up. So they started running. His mother, who had been holding his hand until then, helped him climb faster. Then, as the sounds of the swirling water mingled with the shouts of those around them, she yelled to her son: “Chhito maathi hinda, pachhaadi na-hera,” Nepali for “Climb up faster, don’t look behind.” That’s what Thakur did, climbing higher and higher, until he finally looked back. The water was still gurgling close by, but his mother wasn’t there any more. Nearly four weeks later, Thakur is still waiting – hoping against hope – for his mother and father. He is currently living in a government primary school turned temporary shelter house in Nuwakot district in Nepal, with 26 other children. They are among more than 500 children living in different temporary shelter homes across Nepal’s flood-affected districts, their parents either dead or missing. Under …

Published On 20 Sep 202620 Sep 2026 When Anusa Thapa Magar rushed home from her job in the Maldives after hearing of Nepal’s devastating floods, she clung to the hope that her grandmother had somehow survived. Instead, when she reached Betrawati, the small riverside town where her family lived, she found only a flat expanse of hardened grey silt. There was no house, and no Betrawati. “If my house is buried underneath, that means my Aama is still here underneath too, right?” the 23-year-old said quietly, standing where the family’s two-storey home once stood. Her grandmother, who could barely walk, was last seen resting on her bed. Last month’s torrent of mud, rock and water, triggered by a glacial collapse in the mountains along the Nepal-China border, tore through settlements along the Trishuli River, killing at least 1,386 people on the Nepal side. Authorities say 5,130 are still missing, and while searches continue, it has been days since anyone was found alive. To reach what used to be Betrawati, survivors now climb a steep hillside, …

‘My children did not attack Iran’: 2bn South Asians suffer from distant war | Business and Economy News

‘My children did not attack Iran’: 2bn South Asians suffer from distant war | Business and Economy News

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are together home to nearly two billion people, about 23 percent of the world’s population. Even before the war on Iran, the region depended heavily on imported energy, much of it from Gulf countries. But the extent and nature of exposure of different South Asian countries to Gulf supplies and the Strait of Hormuz varied significantly. Now, they are all feeling the effects of the prolonged and expanding war, as more and more supply routes become choked. South Asia’s dependence on Gulf energy India imports about 85 percent of the crude oil it consumes – it is the world’s third-largest crude importer. Before the war, Gulf producers, including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait, were among its major suppliers, while Qatar was a leading source of liquefied natural gas (LNG). India has a more diversified supply network than its South Asian neighbours, with crude also arriving from Russia, Africa and the Americas. Pakistan is also highly dependent on imported energy, particularly crude oil, petroleum products and LNG. Saudi Arabia, …
