Indian doctors call nationwide strike over rape and murder of Kolkata medic | Protests News

Hospitals to suspend non-essential services and medical procedures on Saturday as public fury over brutal attack grows. Indian doctors have called for a nationwide shutdown of hospital services as public fury over the rape and murder of a trainee medic in the eastern city of Kolkata last week mounts. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), the country’s largest grouping of medics with 400,000 members, said the 24-hour shutdown would be implemented on Saturday, affecting most hospital departments except for essential services. The shutdown comes after thousands of people took to the streets in several cities to express their outrage at the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, whose brutalised body was found on August 9 at Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Friday, large protests were held in various cities – including Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state, Mumbai in the west and Hyderabad in southern India – demanding justice and better security at medical campuses and hospitals. “We want justice,” doctors chanted in Kolkata, waving handwritten signs that read, …

Sunday Shows preview: College protests heat up nationwide, Noem faces backlash

The political tension around the ever-growing pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses will likely be the focus of this week’s Sunday news shows. Two notable instances of violence breaking out at campuses amid the protests occurred Tuesday at Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), when both the New York Police Department (NYPD) and Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) cracked down on pro-Palestinian protesters at the two schools.  New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), who had previously claimed that “outside agitators” were involved in protests at Columbia, will appear on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. He was pressed on those claims by CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins Wednesday, to which he responded that there was “clear evidence of training that was conducted by an outside agitator, that was not a student, did not belong on the campus.” Collins also asked Adams if there would be a “breakdown” from Adams’s office or the NYPD on how many of the people arrested Tuesday were actually Columbia students. “Here’s what we can do, we’re allowed to …

India widens spices crackdown with nationwide checks on all manufacturers

India widens spices crackdown with nationwide checks on all manufacturers

HYDERABAD: India’s food safety regulator said on Thursday (May 2) it had ordered nationwide testing and inspections at all companies making spice mixes, widening a crackdown on the sector as global regulators investigate contamination issues with two popular local brands. Hong Kong last month suspended sales of three spice blends made by India’s MDH and an Everest spice mix for fish curry. Singapore ordered a recall of the same Everest mix as well, flagging high levels of ethylene oxide, which is unfit for human consumption and a cancer risk with long exposure. MDH and Everest products are hugely popular in India and also sold in Europe, Asia and North America, and the companies have said they are safe. Still, US and Australian food authorities said they are gathering more information on the matter, and India had already ordered testing of the two brands’ products. The Indian regulator has now ordered officials to conduct “extensive inspections, sampling and testing at all the manufacturing units”, for powdered spices, with a focus on those making curry powders and mixed …
