If You Heard These 11 Phrases As A Child You Were Probably Raised By A Narcissistic Parent

While it’s true that narcissism is often rooted in insecurity and low self-esteem, there’s no excuse for the toxicity and manipulative dynamics caused by narcissistic behaviors like blame-shifting, avoiding conflict, and invalidating others. If you’ve been in an abusive relationship, there’s a good chance that the person who abused you was a narcissist. Deeply narcissistic people are perilous kinds of people.  What makes them so insidious is that they know how to hurt their victims and how to keep their victims around.  Deeply narcissistic people tend to make the lives of those around them miserable. They bully, dominate, gaslight, and disrespect boundaries. What they might confuse with love, or what their partners might take as love, is a way for them to pursue their happiness and fulfill their desires. Here are things deeply narcissistic people are likely to do to you: 1. Emotionally blackmail you fizkes / Shutterstock This abuse tactic takes advantage of the fact that you have a conscience. 10 Signs Your Adult Child Is A Narcissist, According To Psychology

While narcissists often fly under the radar, with little known research on their day-to-day lives and behaviors, parents of one might have to disagree. Narcissism alignment between leaders and followers linked to higher creativity

Narcissism alignment between leaders and followers linked to higher creativity

A new study investigates how narcissism in both leaders and followers affects creative performance in the workplace. The research finds that when leaders and followers have similar levels of narcissism, employees tend to identify more with their leaders, leading to higher creative output. However, when a leader’s narcissism exceeds that of their followers, this identification is weakened, resulting in reduced creativity. The findings have been published in the journal Human Relations. Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance, a deep need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. Narcissists often display grandiosity, seek constant attention, and believe they are superior to those around them. However, narcissism is multifaceted and can manifest in both positive and negative behaviors. On the positive side, narcissists tend to be confident, assertive, and willing to take bold risks. These traits can make them seem charismatic and capable, which can sometimes translate into visionary leadership. On the negative side, narcissists can be exploitative, self-centered, and dismissive of others, which can hinder relationships and collaboration, …

Political narcissism predicts dehumanization of opponents among conservatives and liberals

Political narcissism predicts dehumanization of opponents among conservatives and liberals

A recent study in the British Journal of Social Psychology offers new insights into why some people view their political opponents in dehumanizing ways. The researchers found that political narcissism, rather than political identification alone, is strongly linked to seeing outgroups as less human. Both liberals and conservatives are susceptible to this behavior when their connection to their political group is driven by a sense of grandiosity and insecurity. Political polarization has become a significant problem in many democracies worldwide, leading to greater hostility between political factions. This growing division often results in negative partisanship, where people express stronger dislike for opposing political groups than positive feelings toward their own. Scholars have long debated whether conservatives or liberals are more prone to such biases, but this study aimed to shift the focus from ideological differences to the nature of how individuals identify with their political groups. Specifically, the researchers wanted to explore whether political narcissism, rather than political identification itself, leads to the dehumanization of political opponents. “We were intrigued by how both liberals/Democrats and …

15 Signs You’re Dating A Kerouac Narcissist (The Worst Kind Of Narcissist), According To Psychology

15 Signs You’re Dating A Kerouac Narcissist (The Worst Kind Of Narcissist), According To Psychology

In the creative world, I’ve learned that there are often two different types of artists: real ones, and narcissists who claim to be “artists.” I call the latter Kerouac Narcissists, and believe it or not, there are a lot of them.  Kerouac Narcissists are often the reason why people warn others against dating musicians, painters, actors, and writers — and the reasons behind those warnings are warranted. They often see other people as “props” in the grand American novel that is their life, and that means that they will often treat them as such. In almost all interpersonal relationships, those with this type of narcissism are insanely toxic and damaging to others. It’s not uncommon for a Kerouac Narcissist to bully others they deem “too uncool to be part of their clique,” nor is it uncommon for them to romance a girl, “get inspired” by another woman/lifestyle, then bail. Narcissism linked to aggression in daily social interactions, study finds

Narcissism linked to aggression in daily social interactions, study finds

Recent work published in the Journal of Personality found that grandiose narcissism and interpersonal antagonism were linked to increased aggression in real-life interactions, especially when combined with negative emotional states. While studies have shown that narcissistic traits correlate with aggression, traditional research often relies on retrospective self-reports or laboratory settings, which may not capture real-time, situational dynamics. In this work, researchers Tianwei V. Du and colleagues used an experience-sampling method to examine how specific dimensions of narcissism influence aggressive behaviors during everyday interactions. This study recruited 477 undergraduate students from a large public university who received four daily prompts via a mobile application to report on their most intense interactions since the last prompt for a duration of 10 days. At the baseline, narcissistic traits were assessed using the Five Factor Narcissism Inventory Short Form (FFNI-SF), which measures various facets of narcissism, including entitlement, exploitativeness, and self-sufficiency. Participants also completed measures of verbal and physical aggression (e.g., “Since the last prompt… I felt like I wanted to hurt someone; I said something offensive to someone”), …

Does healthy narcissism exist? Why experts say there are positives to this personality disorder

Does healthy narcissism exist? Why experts say there are positives to this personality disorder

When most people picture a narcissist, we think of self-centered, awful people who lack empathy. But it’s a real mental disorder that is more than just an insufferable personality trait — and in some cases narcissism may even have some benefits. “Not every inconvenience is trauma, not every person you have difficulty with is a narcissist and not all trouble focusing is ADHD.” Clinically speaking, narcissistic personality disorder is “a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy,” according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Psychologists and armchair critics alike enjoy warning the public about narcissists in their midst. This can be seen in the realm of politics from Donald Trump’s refusal to concede in the 2020 presidential election to popular culture, such as the infamous defamation trial involving actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Most people have also had to experience terrible narcissists, whether it’s family, friends or people at work. Certainly no medical expert would defend narcissistic behavior like violent outbursts, malicious deception or petulant refusals to admit defeat. …

Are You Secretly A Narcissist Without Knowing It? How To Find Out | Perrin Elisha

By very definition, if you are asking this question you are self-reflective in a way that someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder is likely not. However, the story isn’t that simple. First off, we’re all narcissistic, so the secret is to learn how to be happy with yourself anyway. And second, that’s healthy! What do I mean? Well, we all need a solid sense of ourselves, confidence, a sense of our talents and capacities, and the courage to try new things, all of which come from a healthy narcissistic development. Our narcissistic development powerfully impacts how we feel in relationships — whether we feel safe, loveable, able to handle conflict, and especially whether we have good boundaries.  Psychologists talk about a “narcissistic line of development,” which is a fancy way of saying that we all start off feeling, necessarily so, that we are the center of the world (by the way, this is to compensate for how terrifying it is to be a little child and depend so entirely on the adults in our life to …

9 Low-Key Signs That You Dealt With Narcissistic Abuse As A Kid

In certain scenes I’ve been in, it’s almost a given that you have (or had, in my case) serious issues with your family. Most of the people in these crowds were runaways. Those who were able to get out and make a living were low-to-no contact. If I had to guess, I’d say that around half of the people in these crowds had a narcissistic parent. How did I know? After drinks, they’d always open up about it. Or, they’d flat-out tell me. Over time, I started to notice something interesting about the kids of narcissistic parents. They often had very similar traits. These are the things that usually tip me off to a childhood spent around a narcissist. Here are 9 low-key signs that you dealt with narcissistic abuse as a kid: 1. Perfectionism Narcissistic parents tend to view their children as extensions of themselves. Since narcissists demand that everyone sees them as perfect, that often means that their children have to be “perfect” too. I’ve seen a lot of young adults have meltdowns …
