Nancy Lehmann’s Sinners in Pearls | Michael Gorra

“There are just three big cities in the United States that are ‘story cities’—New York, of course, New Orleans, and, best of the lot, San Francisco.” The line is Frank Norris’s, but it’s better known as the epigraph of O. Henry’s “A Municipal Report” (1909), the municipality being Nashville, as if chosen to prove Norris wrong. Well, New York—of course. San Francisco I’m not so sure about. It’s better in the movies, even if Vertigo was based on a French thriller, and as for the rest of the country, Norris couldn’t have predicted how Chicago would develop, much less Los Angeles. But New Orleans is a different matter. It really is a “story city,” and not just because it too is a port with a complicated racial history, the most complicated, in the early days, of any American entrepôt. It’s the city where George Washington Cable set “The ‘Haunted House’ in Royal Street” (1889), about a mysterious French Quarter beauty in the 1830s who got so much pleasure out of torturing her slaves that even …

Less than five years after the revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST or Webb) debut, NASA is heading back to the launch pad to deploy another world-class space observatory—the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Called Roman for short, the space telescope will hunt dark matter, dark energy and exoplanets, as well as providing an unprecedented view of the cosmos to all sorts of astrophysicists. With Webb and the venerable Hubble Space Telescope continuing to gather ever more observations, it’s easy to wonder what another mission will add to the mix. But scientists in the know can’t wait for Roman to really get to work early next year. Its unique capabilities will complement Hubble and Webb while creating its own hugely important legacy—even if …

Nasa’s new telescope is named after astronomer Nancy Grace Roman – but who was she?

Nasa’s new telescope is named after astronomer Nancy Grace Roman – but who was she?

Nasa has named its latest flagship space telescope after the American scientist Nancy Grace Roman. Roman’s contributions to astrophysics should have made her famous, yet many people will never have heard of her. For decades, astronomers have been spoiled with stunning data and imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope, which was launched into Earth orbit in 1990. In 2021, the James Webb space telescope (JWST) was sent into space as Hubble’s successor. Since then, JWST has identified some of the earliest stars and galaxies to form after the Big Bang and has made a host of other amazing discoveries. JWST is designed to look at individual objects in extraordinary detail, but the Roman telescope is designed to survey the sky at scale. By monitoring vast areas of the cosmos, astronomers can piece together a broader picture of how the universe changes. The capabilities of the two telescopes are therefore complementary. The new observatory’s name honours a scientist who battled discrimination in a male-dominated field, eventually becoming Nasa’s first chief astronomer. Roman was born in Nashville, …

Palisades Village reopens with new restaurants from Nancy Silverton and Timothy Hollingsworth

Palisades Village reopens with new restaurants from Nancy Silverton and Timothy Hollingsworth

“Cool and sexy,” declared developer Rick Caruso of celebrity chef Timothy Hollingsworth’s new restaurant at Palisades Village. Throngs of guests dined, shopped and meandered through the upscale mall over the weekend, bringing life to the shuttered complex that sat vacant for 19 months due to the devastating Palisades fire. They filed into Hollingsworth’s Alphabet Bar & Grill, nibbled McConnell’s ice cream cones on a nearby grass lawn and twirled forkfuls of pasta from some of L.A.’s most notable Italian restaurateurs. The Caruso-owned Palisades Village reopened on Saturday after more than $100 million in repairs, and with it came a renewed sense of optimism as the neighborhood continues to rebuild. Though the shopping complex survived the fires, in part through the hiring of private firefighters, some buildings in the center sustained smoke damage and all of it required more than a year of renovations. Existing food businesses contained perishables and some could not be accessed for weeks following the fire, resulting in water, toxic-waste and mold damage. Every business space inside Palisades Village was demolished down …

Letters sent to Nancy Guthrie’s family after her disappearance are released

Letters sent to Nancy Guthrie’s family after her disappearance are released

Two ransom notes purportedly sent by those who kidnapped Nancy Guthrie in Arizona earlier this year were released Friday by local authorities hoping to generate new leads in the case. The second note, sent Feb. 6 to a Tucson news outlet, states that Guthrie, 84, died shortly after she was taken. “We believe it was heart related,” the note says. “She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.” The 84-year-old mother of “TODAY” co-host Savannah Guthrie went missing from her home near Tucson early Feb. 1. The FBI has said her disappearance is being investigated as a kidnapping for ransom. The first note, sent on Feb. 2 to the same outlet, a CBS affiliate, stated that a white smartwatch was on the floor at the foot of her bed and that the flood light in the backyard had been destroyed. That note demanded a payment of $4 million in …

Nancy Sinatra’s 8 sultriest pin-up photos proving why she was truly the ’60s It Girl

While Frank Sinatra’s legacy as one of the most legendary entertainers of the 20th century remains hard to beat, of all his offspring, it’s his daughter Nancy who’s come closest to matching his own. The actress and singer, officially 86 as of June 8, began her career as a teen star of her dad’s variety shows, before breaking into music and acting. Her 1966 hit “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” remains her signature six decades later, although taking a walk down memory lane uncovers the star’s knack for taking some truly iconic (and very ’60s) pin-up shots. Today show hosts say Nancy Guthrie’s abduction brought them closer

Today show hosts say Nancy Guthrie’s abduction brought them closer

Sheinelle Jones and Jenna Bush Hager are reflecting on how the suspected abduction of their co-star Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, changed the dynamics on the set of Today. After Nancy, 84, disappeared from her Arizona home February 1, the co-anchors of the NBC morning show were ready to show their support for Savannah amid the highly publicized search for her mother. Jones, the co-host of Jenna & Sheinelle, told Page Six in a recent interview that it was a no-brainer to show support for Savannah, especially after the anchor had helped her following the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh, from glioblastoma in May 2025. “We’re going to rally around our sister,” Jones, 48, told the outlet. “She rallied around me. We know how to do that here.” She said, “It continues to bond us in ways we can’t even describe or make sense of.” Savannah Guthrie returned to NBC’s ‘Today’ after a two-month hiatus following the disappearance of her mom, Nancy Guthrie (2026 Invision) Willie Geist, Stephanie Ruhle, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Jenna Bush-Hager, …

Khloe Kardashian questions lack of information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

Khloe Kardashian questions lack of information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

Khloé Kardashian has questioned the ongoing investigation of Nancy Guthrie’s “heartbreaking” disappearance, four months after police believe she was abducted. The 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie disappeared from her Arizona home on the morning of February 1, prompting a nationwide search for the missing woman. No suspect has been identified, and there is still no evidence to indicate whether Nancy is alive. Kardashian, 41, addressed Nancy’s disappearance on Wednesday’s episode of her podcast, Khloé in Wonder Land, while speaking to Crime Junkie podcast host Ashley Flowers. “I mean, is that not heartbreaking?” the reality star said of the case. “This is 2026. There is nothing? That is mind-blowing.” “I can’t even believe that. But I’m also very conspiratorial,” Flowers responded, to which Kardashian replied: “Me too.” Khloé Kardashian said there’s ‘not one piece of information’ about missing person Nancy Guthrie amid investigation (Khloe in Wonderland / Pima County Sheriff’s Office) The Good American founder went on to reference the ransom notes sent to media outlets at the start of the investigation. “How weird …

The Novelist Nancy Lemann’s New Orleans Return

The Novelist Nancy Lemann’s New Orleans Return

A love-it-or-leave-it feature of Nancy Lemann’s distinctive, dreamy style is that she often repeats herself. Images, events, and turns of phrase reoccur both within and across her five novels and even, to a lesser extent, in her nonfiction. The people in her books are always “falling apart”; their hearts are often “in a million pieces on the floor.” Her narrators—usually women from New Orleans—have a reverence for older traditions, including baseball, which represents “a chance to go forth with the heroes,” and for men in seersucker suits who have outdated affectations, like reading ancient Greek and eating oysters at lunch. Several of these women have soft spots for the same “blue-eyed boy with the crooked smile” (who has a drinking problem), and they tend to indulge in what could be called negative self-talk (they chide themselves for being “idiotic” or “lamebrained”). In the introduction to a new reissue of Lemann’s 1985 cult-classic debut novel, Lives of the Saints, the British writer Geoff Dyer makes note of the “hypnotic repetition” that gives the book its rhythm …

Inside Sunset Boulevard star Nancy Olson’s life now 75+ years after film’s release

Inside Sunset Boulevard star Nancy Olson’s life now 75+ years after film’s release

It’s been more than 75 years since Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard hit theaters, putting a mirror up on Hollywood’s treatment of its older stars. The film was a box office and critical smash, even receiving nominations for 11 Academy Awards and winning three. It solidified the star power of Best Actor nominee William Holden and led to a career resurgence for Best Actress nominee Gloria Swanson. However, another one of the stars to come from the landmark film was Nancy Olson, who received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for playing script reader Betty Schaefer. At 97 years old now, Nancy is one of the oldest surviving Oscar nominees, and one of the only stars from Hollywood’s studio system who is still living. Sunset Boulevard was only Nancy’s second feature film, and kicked off a prolific career in front of the camera that lasted decades. © Getty Images Nancy Olson’s career The immediate aftermath of the success of Sunset Boulevard was studios’ decisions to pair Nancy with her co-star and onscreen love interest William Holden.
