Councils move hundreds of homeless families out of London with 24-hour ultimatums | Homelessness

[ad_1] Hundreds of homeless families were permanently forced out of London by councils last year after many were given 24-hour ultimatums to either accept a private tenancy far away from the capital or be kicked out of temporary accommodation and left on the streets. The campaign group Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth (HASL) found that 319 households in 2023 accepted offers of a private tenancy outside London. They were often given 24 hours by council officials to accept homes out of the capital or risk making themselves “intentionally homeless” by refusing an offer. One in 10 households who accepted these offers were placed in the north-east in places such as Hartlepool and Durham, and two in 10 were sent to the Midlands. The Midlands has been a popular place for London councils to privately discharge homeless families since 2017, but similar placements in the north-east are a recent trend. The far-flung placements have been driven by rising rents in the south-east that have not kept pace with local housing allowance (LHA) – the amount that …

Forest disappointed at appeal loss but time to move on, says Nuno

Forest disappointed at appeal loss but time to move on, says Nuno

[ad_1] Nottingham Forest are disappointed after losing an appeal over a Premier League points deduction, but have moved on and are focussed on avoiding relegation, manager Nuno Espirito Santo said on Thursday. Forest received a four-point deduction for a breach of the league’s profit and sustainability rules in March, and were informed on Tuesday that their appeal was unsuccessful. This leaves them 17th in the table with 29 points, three above the relegation zone with two games remaining. “We were all disappointed. Because we conquered those points on the pitch we had the hope and the belief that they can give them back, but the decision is over,” Espirito Santo said. “This is the reality, this is what we have, this is what we have to face and let’s focus on ourselves because it’s in our hands. “Since the beginning, since the possibility of the points deduction we always face it the same way, what we have to focus on is ourselves, our job. We have already moved on.” A win at home to Chelsea …

Psychopathic women tend to move their heads very little when talking to other people

Psychopathic women tend to move their heads very little when talking to other people

[ad_1] A recent study of incarcerated women found that those with pronounced psychopathic traits tended to hold their head more rigidly during a clinical interview. The study used an automated detection algorithm to assess head position and dynamics. The research was published in Personality and Individual Differences. Psychopathic traits are a specific cluster of personality characteristics that include a profound lack of empathy and remorse resulting in indifferent or callous attitudes towards others. Individuals with high levels of psychopathic traits tend to display shallow emotional responses and have difficulty forming genuine emotional attachments with others. They tend to be deceitful and manipulative, using charm or deceit to achieve their goals. A strong sense of egocentricity and a grandiose sense of self-worth are also common, making them overconfident and disdainful of others. Furthermore, individuals with pronounced psychopathic traits tend to be impulsive and thrill-seeking, showing poor behavior controls and a disregard for social norms and the law. These traits make such individuals a challenge in social and professional settings and pose risks for antisocial behavior. Scientists …

Making John Swinney leader may be the SNP’s smartest move in years | Dani Garavelli

Making John Swinney leader may be the SNP’s smartest move in years | Dani Garavelli

[ad_1] John Swinney’s accession to the leadership of the Scottish National party has been called a “coronation”. Yet the smooth handover of power that took place yesterday was not a given. That the party avoided another acrimonious battle – like the one last year between his predecessor Humza Yousaf and former finance secretary Kate Forbes – was down to his deft handling of would-be rivals. After her defeat last year, Forbes, a social conservative who opposes same-sex marriage, became a rallying point for internal disaffection. Had she stood again, as she clearly intended to, the SNP’s divisions – between left and right, between opposing views on trans rights – would have become further entrenched. Instead, Swinney persuaded Forbes to throw her weight behind him by promising her a senior cabinet position – a masterstroke that also brought her most vocal backers to heel. Just days later, Swinney had to see off a second contender: “serial disruptor” Graeme McCormick, who claimed to have reached the nomination threshold of 100 signatures from party members. Yet McCormick also …

Scottish salmon industry challenged over move to drop ‘farmed’ from labels | Animal welfare

[ad_1] Animal welfare campaigners are challenging the decision to allow producers of Scottish salmon to drop the word “farmed” from labelling. An application by the industry body claimed changing the protected name wording on the front of packaging from “Scottish farmed salmon” to “Scottish salmon” made sense because wild salmon was no longer sold in supermarkets, which consumers were aware of. But charities and chefs have criticised the decision by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), taken last month, to allow Salmon Scotland’s application, saying it facilitates greenwashing and will mislead consumers. Rachel Mulrenan, of WildFish, one of the organisations bringing the legal challenge, said: “As sustainability issues become increasingly important, this is a thinly disguised attempt by the Scottish salmon farming industry to pull the wool over consumers’ eyes, both in the UK and further afield. “More than ever, people need to know the true origin of the products they are buying and consuming, so that they can make informed decisions. This name-change is a step in the wrong direction.” The …
