Players rebuke clumsy ad strategies, even in popular games | Mobile Premier League

Players rebuke clumsy ad strategies, even in popular games | Mobile Premier League

Online game company Mobile Premier League (MPL) this week released a new study in which it reveals a trend in the reviews of some of the most popular mobile games: Namely, that many of the gamers who play these titles are unhappy with in-game advertising. Players can have similar negative reactions to things such as updates and technical problems, but the distribution of their positive and negative sentiment can reveal different sentiments towards different gameplay approaches. For its research, MPL selected the top 5 most downloaded games from Google Play as identified by AppRadar’s 2024 report, and then analyzed the 75,000 most relevant user reviews of those games. An MPL spokesperson summed up the general sentiment of these reviews in a statement, “The data reveals that volume of downloads doesn’t necessarily correlate with player satisfaction. Games with similar market penetration can have drastically different player sentiment profiles.” As an example of the different player feelings, the report shows various player reactions to in-game monetization, and Candy Crush Saga shows a huge spike in negative sentiment, …

Bereaved families and MPs call for tougher measures on mobile phones for under-16s | Politics News

Bereaved families and MPs are urging the government to take tougher steps to protect younger teenagers from “horrific” content on social media.  The Australian government’s decision to legislate for a smartphone ban for under 16s has reignited the debate in the UK about further restrictions, and a Labour MP is hoping to get government support for curbs on social media. Stuart Stephens is among those campaigning for the government to go further and spoke to Sky News. Image: Olly Stephens, 13, was murdered in 2021 Image: Olly with his father Stuart His son Olly was just 13 when he was murdered by other teenagers following a row which began on social media. Mr Stephens said his son had been trying to stand up for another child who was a victim of “patterning” – humiliating someone and circulating it on video to blackmail them. Three 14-year-olds were jailed for Olly’s murder in 2021 – following an investigation involving 11 social media platforms. “We are angry,” Mr Stephens said. “Without a doubt, without all that interaction he …

The Floating Doctors: Mobile medicine comes to Panama’s jungles | Health

‘A true blessing’ At the conclusion of the second day of the clinic, the tired volunteers walk down a muddy hill to bathe in the cold waters of a nearby river, as there are few available showers in the village. They towel off, have a warm dinner and string up their hammocks for a final night. Over the past two days, beneath the tropical heat and rain, they saw 133 patients and provided assistance and treatment for a number of maladies, from lesions and diarrhoea to fevers, cysts and pregnancy concerns. “As a doctor, you’re always facing an uncertain and challenging environment where you’re questioning yourself,” says Dr Geoff McCullen, an orthopaedic surgeon and professor at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. “This week, I think our students learned they can face uncertainty, they can face challenges, manage these complexities simultaneously and be decisive about what a patient needs.” Iryna Hrynyk, a Floating Doctors volunteer from the United States, and Federico Criado Rota, a volunteer from Argentina, attend to a patient with …

Mobile phone use doesn’t increase brain cancer risk, says research review | Science & Tech News

A review of 63 studies has found no link between mobile phone use and an increased risk of brain cancer. Commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO), it found no rise in cases despite a huge increase in wireless technology over the last 20 years. The review was headed by experts from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, and included investigators from 10 countries. It looked at research on radio frequencies in the wavelengths of 300 Hz to 300 GHz – used for mobile phones, wi-fi, radar, baby monitors and other applications. Co-author of the review Professor Mark Elwood, an honorary professor of cancer epidemiology at University of Auckland, said the team looked at cancers of the brain, pituitary gland, salivary glands, and leukaemias. “None of the major questions studied showed increased risks,” he said. “For the main issue, mobile phones and brain cancers, we found no increased risk, even with 10+ years exposure and the maximum categories of call time or number of calls.” During the pandemic, 5G mobile phone masts were …

Fortnite back on mobile phones after Epic Games’ row with Google and Apple | Science & Tech News

Fortnite is back on mobile phones for the first time in four years, after bitter legal rows got the game taken off both Android and Apple app stores.  Now, developer Epic Games has launched its own app store, making it one of the first third-party stores available on iOS – although UK iPhone users will have to wait until next year to play. Android users can get flossing straight away, but they’ll need to download the new Epic Games Store, which also contains Fall Guys and Rocket League. The store’s launch marks the latest chapter in a long-running battle royale between Epic and the tech giants. Epic claimed, in a number of court cases, that both Google and Apple operated anti-competitively. Fortnite was taken off both stores in 2020 when Epic stopped paying commission for its downloads. It lost a court case against Apple where it argued third-party app stores should be allowed on iPhones and other devices. In March, however, a new EU law came into force which meant that Apple had to allow …
