AI revolution or ethical dilemma? What 4.2 million tweets reveal about public perception of ChatGPT

An analysis of millions of English-language tweets discussing ChatGPT in the first three months after its launch revealed that while the general public expressed excitement over this powerful new tool, there was also concern about its potential for misuse. Negative opinions raised questions about its credibility, possible biases, ethical issues, and concerns related to the employment rights of data annotators and programmers. On the other hand, positive views highlighted excitement about its potential use in various fields. The paper was published in PLOS ONE. ChatGPT is an advanced AI language model developed by OpenAI, designed to understand and generate human-like text based on user input. It was introduced to the public in November 2022 as part of the GPT-3.5 architecture and later enhanced with versions like GPT-4. ChatGPT can perform various tasks, such as answering questions, providing explanations, generating text, offering advice, and assisting with problem-solving. It uses deep learning techniques to predict the most relevant responses, enabling it to engage in interactive conversations on a wide range of topics. The model was trained on …

The 0 Million Passion Project That’s Too Ahead of Its Time

The $120 Million Passion Project That’s Too Ahead of Its Time

While working on his latest film, Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola had an idea: What if viewers interacted with the movie itself? He’d have microphones placed throughout audiences at every screening, so that at a predetermined moment, everyone who wanted to could ask the characters a question—and someone on-screen would respond. It would bridge the gap between fact and fiction. It would prove that cinema-going could truly be a unique experience. And it would have worked, the director told me at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, if he’d found someone to help make the technology work. Coppola had done everything else to create the experience: He’d come up with questions he anticipated people would want to ask—such as how the characters were feeling or what they wanted to do next—and he’d composed different answers to each one. He’d then filmed his cast reciting the responses he’d written. He even started collaborating with the programmers behind Alexa, Amazon’s AI assistant, on a mechanism that would process audience members’ queries and play a clip with …

Martin Shkreli Made Copies of His Million Wu-Tang Album—and Hid Them in ‘Safes All Around the World’

Martin Shkreli Made Copies of His $2 Million Wu-Tang Album—and Hid Them in ‘Safes All Around the World’

The members of PleasrDAO are, well, pretty displeased with Martin Shkreli. The “digital autonomous organization” spent $4.75 million to buy the fabled Wu-Tang Clan album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, which had been produced as only a single copy. The album had once belonged to Shkreli, who purchased it directly from Wu-Tang Clan for $2 million in 2015. But after Shkreli became the “pharma bro” poster boy for price gouging in the drug sector, he ended up in severe legal trouble and served a seven-year prison sentence for securities fraud. He also had to pay a $7.4 million penalty in that case, and the government seized and then sold Once Upon a Time in Shaolin to help pay the bill. The album was truly “one of a kind”—a protest against the devaluation of music in the digital age and the kind of fascinating curio that instantly made its owners into “interesting people.” The album came as a two-CD set inside a nickel and silver box inscribed with the Wu-Tang logo, and the full package …

Taliban ‘deliberately deprived’ 1.4 million girls of schooling: UN | Education News

As Afghanistan’s rulers mark three years in power, the future of an entire generation of girls is ‘in jeopardy’, UN says. Afghanistan’s Taliban government has “deliberately deprived” at least 1.4 million girls of their right to an education during its three years in power, according to the United Nations. About 300,000 more girls are missing out on school since UNESCO last carried out a count in April 2023, it said on Thursday and warned that “the future of an entire generation is now in jeopardy”. Taking into account the number of girls not going to school before the Taliban came to power in August 2021, the UN’s educational and cultural agency said 80 percent of Afghan school-age girls – a total of 2.5 million – are now being denied their right to an education. “UNESCO is alarmed by the harmful consequences of this increasingly massive drop-out rate, which could lead to a rise in child labour and early marriage,” it said in a statement. Afghanistan is the only country in the world to stop girls …

£7.7 million bounty offered in hunt for members of North Korea-backed hacking group | UK News

The UK, US and South Korea have accused a North Korea-backed cyber group of carrying out an online espionage campaign to steal military and nuclear secrets. The “Andariel” group has been compromising organisations around the globe as it attempts to get hold of sensitive and classified technical information and intellectual property data, according to the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The centre, along with the FBI in the US and South Korea’s national intelligence service, have issued a joint warning and advisory note about Andariel’s actions. They have urged critical infrastructure organisations to “stay vigilant” against such cyber operations. It comes as the US government offers a reward of up to $10m (£7.7m) to anyone with information that helps it find members of malicious cyber groups targeting America on behalf of foreign governments. The US state department’s rewards for justice programme is looking for Rim Jong Hyok, a North Korean national associated with Andariel, which has been active since around 2009. The reward will be offered to any person who helps identify or locate …

Amazon fined .9 million over warehouse worker quotas in California

Amazon fined $5.9 million over warehouse worker quotas in California

Amazon.com has been fined $5.9 million by a California labor regulator who says the online retail giant failed to properly inform workers of productivity quotas at two warehouses, including one where some workers are trying to unionize. The office of California Labor Commissioner Lilia Garcia-Brower announced the fines, which were issued in May, on Tuesday. A 2022 California law requires employers to provide written descriptions of quotas to workers if they can be disciplined for failing to complete jobs at a specified speed. The commissioner said Amazon violated that law nearly 60,000 times in a five-month period ending in March at massive warehouses in Moreno Valley and Redlands, outside of Los Angeles. Amazon spokesperson Maureen Lynch Vogel said the company is appealing the citations and denied that warehouse workers have fixed quotas. “At Amazon, individual performance is evaluated over a long period of time, in relation to how the entire site’s team is performing. Employees can – and are encouraged to – review their performance whenever they wish,” Lynch Vogel said in a statement. Criticisms …

Accountant instigated friend to be ‘silent director’ of firms that handled over US$1 million in scam funds

SINGAPORE: A chartered accountant and his friend failed to supervise the companies they helped to incorporate in Singapore, with two firms receiving more than US$1 million in scam proceeds. Ishan Sharma, 34, admitted on Friday (Jun 14) to instigating his friend, Kandhiban Letchumanansamy, 36, into not exercising due diligence in discharging his duties as a director of two companies, Quartz Resources and Kiora Worldwide.  Kandhiban failed to supervise the companies’ affairs and to ensure that the firms were not used as vehicles for criminal activity.  Ishan pleaded guilty to two out of four charges under the Companies Act, while Kandhiban pleaded guilty to one of three charges under the same act.  The remaining charges will be taken into consideration when both are sentenced on Jul 9.  Ishan, a chartered accountant, incorporated several companies in 2016 and 2020 to provide corporate secretarial services. He earned about S$20,000 (US$14,777) to S$22,000 a month. In 2017, Ishan found out that Kandhiban was unemployed and offered him a job for a monthly salary of S$500.  Kandhiban was required to be …
