Parenting advice: I’m a midwife and these are the signs your baby has tongue tie

The parental awareness around tongue tie has increased in recent years, yet navigating and accessing the right support and treatment can feel like a bit of a minefield for parents in the midst of the early days and weeks postpartum, and throughout infancy and early childhood.  Infant tongue tie in the UK is not routinely assessed for at birth and is not always picked up during routine postnatal appointments. The onus of seeking support around tongue tie can be left up to the parents to figure out what might be going on for their baby. As such it is important that parents are aware of signs and symptoms that might present in © GettyParents may wonder if their baby has tongue tie A tongue tie is where the lingual frenulum (connective tissue under the tongue) is too short or tight and restricts the full range of motion of the tongue, impairing the function of sucking, swallowing and/or breathing during infant feeding.  A thorough assessment of the tongue function requires a physical examination of your baby’s …

‘I’m not judging you’ – midwife Juno Carey on what it’s like to work in an abortion clinic | Abortion

‘I’m not judging you’ – midwife Juno Carey on what it’s like to work in an abortion clinic | Abortion

Juno Carey, a pseudonym, is a midwife practitioner who has worked in an abortion clinic in the UK for the last eight years. She lives with her wife and their three children – the baby’s at home when I meet her, along with Carey’s sister, who’s looking after him. Carey is tidy and serene, the woman you’d single out in a playground if you needed a tissue, or a hairbrush, or some nice word on a bad day. She has written a book about abortion that is not at all serene, but deeply knowledgable, full of conviction and not even trying to keep the peace. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book so plain in its thinking and descriptions – of the women and their situations, of what abortion care looks like and the dilemmas, sensitivities and practicalities in a terrain that is discussed so much by those who oppose it, and shrouded in silence by those who support it. I wouldn’t say Carey’s tone was ever celebratory, but what often comes over in …

Call the Midwife hints at trouble ahead for Trixie in worrying series finale first-look

Call the Midwife has hinted at trouble for Trixie in first-look images at the series 13 finale, which airs on BBC One on Sunday night.  The midwife, played by Helen George, has had a tough time of it recently following her relationship issues with her new husband, Matthew (Olly Rix). WATCH: Helen George talks filming ‘hard-hitting’ scenes for Matthew and Trixie in series 13 In the latest episode, Trixie turned to Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) for help after experiencing sleeping problems. “It’s the insomnia that’s tearing me to shreds,” she tells the doctor, revealing she only gets a couple of hours of sleep per night. “I keep waking up and then when I do eventually drift off, I suddenly feel as if I’m falling or being pushed from somewhere very high and then I’m lying awake again.” While Dr Turner initially suggests signing her off work, Trixie insists that she’s better when busy. He then prescribes her sleeping pills, but only to be a “short term” solution and advises her not to take them every …

Call the midwife! No matter how bad you’ve heard care can be, ‘freebirthing’ is not the answer | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

Call the midwife! No matter how bad you’ve heard care can be, ‘freebirthing’ is not the answer | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

“Could you do a poo like this?” There’s a sentence I will never forget. I was in my second trimester and doing a hypnobirthing course. The question is supposed to be a metaphor for childbirth: being surrounded by doctors with clipboards would apparently make you too tense to poo, or give birth. To which my rejoinder was, “Well, surely it depends how much you need to go.” Other than National Childbirth Trust (NCT) classes – in which the instructor told us that the ideal birth is at home, without pain relief (not their official line, they say) – this was my first glimpse of the anti-medical approach to childbirth. I thought about it again when I read about the concerning rise of “freebirthing” – when a woman gives birth at home without assistance from a doctor or midwife – and the fact that the Royal College of Midwives has stated that “midwives are understandably concerned about women giving birth at home without assistance, as it brings with it increased risks to both the mother and …

Look, you have to keep watching until the end of the series. Just see how the character evolves this series and then let’s see what happens in the future.  “But I love this show dearly,” she added.  © BBCHelen George appeared on The One Show on Monday This isn’t the first time Hellen has addressed speculation about her position on the show. During an interview with The Times in November, the 39-year-old said: “I don’t know what the plan is,” adding: “Like in life, you just never know what’s going to happen.” She went on to say that nevertheless, she will stay busy: “I get a bit restless …
